Nearly 200 chickens seized, destroyedThe Depar tment o f

Agriculture and local police seized 193 diseased chickens from a North Washington Street house Friday morning. The birds had contracted Infectious Laryngotracheitis, a respiratory disease that is highly contagious to poultry, necessitating the destruc-tion of the entire flock, said Sgt. John Quilter. Removal of

the chickens from the home at 84 North Washington St. began at about 9:30 a.m., Quilter said. The Department of Agriculture had previously obtained a warrant to search the house, he said. The home was condemned in January and residents Joe and Mary Honyak were forced to move out after the chickens were discovered. The birds re-

mained until they could be tested for disease, with the owners allowed to return to look after them as needed. The Depar tment o f

Agriculture is continuing to investigate the incident and will bring any charges that are filed against the Honyaks, Quilter said.

ing, reading, or adjusting electronic devices, to hav-ing a .08 blood alcohol level. The difference, in es-

sence, is its more perva-sive than a DUI because most people got the mes-sage about the evils of [driv-ing under the influence], Beckert said. But everybody knows somebody that texts and drives.Just because everybodys

doing it, doesnt mean its okay, he added. The EDD program was

started by Joel Feldman, a t r i a l l awyer f rom Philadelphia whose daugh-ter was killed by a distracted driver in 2009. Beckert said he got involved when a col-

league asked if he would be willing to speak to students as part of the program. Before joining EDD,

Beckert said he too was guilty of texting and driv-ing. I never gave it a second thought, he said.According to www.dis-

traction.gov, approximately 11 percent of drivers under 20 involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crash. The risks are very se-

rious, Beckert said. You could hurt somebody

theres so much to lose. There is a statute in

Connecticut that restricts the use of hand-held de-vices while driving, but the penalties are a scale of fines. Beckert said he hopes this will change over time.As we become more

aware as a society or com-munity of the dangers of dis-tracted driving, hopefully the legislature will take a look at that and make rules similar to that of a DUI in some respects, he said.

    NONE INJURED IN FIRE

The Plainville Fire Department responded to a single family home at 29 Carol Dr. the morning of March 10. On arrival, heavy fire was venting from the windows on the lower level of the raised ranch, exposing up the side of the house and entering the attic. Fire crews extinguished the fire. Farmington and Tunxis Hose Fire Departments assisted with mutual aid. No injuries were reported. The occupants were not home at the time of the fire, which remains under investigation by the Plainville Fire Marshal Office. | (Photos by Patrick Matthews)

Lifeguard training set to begin April 14

The snow hasnt yet melted away, but a select few are getting their bathing suits out to start preparing for how to keep your summer safe. Lifeguards have an extremely

big responsibility, Amanda Robles, aquatics director for the Wheeler Regional Family YMCA, said. They are responsible for the lives of others. To prepare for this potentially

life-saving job, the Wheeler Y will hold an American Red Cross Lifeguard Course beginning Monday,

April 14. The six-week course for new lifeguards will give men and women the skills to guard area pools and beaches this summer.Robles threw cold wa-

ter on the assumption that being a lifeguard is a laid back gig.It is not about the tan, she said.

Seriously though, it is not always the most glamorous job. All life-guards must remain vigilant at all times because someone can become distressed within seconds. Robles said those interested in

working as a lifeguard should have, above all, strong swimming skills and endurance. Good people skills also are important.Lifeguards have to

be able to communicate well and be respectful of people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, Robles said. Plainville resident Courtney

Brown has been a lifeguard for nearly five years, the last 3.5 years at the YMCA. For her, lifeguarding is more than a paycheck. At first, I was just searching for

a summer job, Brown said. I soon realized that I wanted to make some sort of a difference, and lifeguarding ended up being the perfect fit.The role of a lifeguard is not to

be taken lightly, Brown said. When you are on duty, remember that you are responsible for every person that touches your water.Students in the lifeguarding course

can expect a test on Day 1, where their swimming skills will be tested. They will then endure training, in and out of the water, for the dura-tion of the course. The final day will

Its still winter. Have you noticed? We cer-tainly have, and are pining for spring days that bring trips to the park and the ability to go outside without the task of rustling up the necessary snow gear. One of our favorite activ-ities during these cold, indoor days is visiting the Connecticut Science Center. The science center is one

of the most impressive places to take kids in Connecticut. Located in Hartford, it boasts 150 hands-on exhibits, a 3-D digital theater, and a wide va-riety of topics to entertain fam-ily members of all ages in its 144,000 square foot building. We have spent hours explor-

ing the multiple floors and their dizzying array of educational fun, and my children, being four and six, particularly love the Lego Imagination Station, the Stream Table, and the Sight and Sound Experience. There is always a traveling

exhibit, and currently Lost in Egypt is on display. When we visited recently, the kids deci-phered hieroglyphics, sat on a camel replica, and pieced to-gether a 3-D pottery puzzle, pretending to be archaeologists reconstructing a clay pot with found pieces. We explored photographs of ancient Egypt, comparing them to current day pictures depicting cities and children playing soccer, and saw a real life human mummy. Its a very interesting exhibit, and will be available until May 4.Usually when we visit, we ar-

rive in the morning and pack a lunch to enjoy at the tables pro-vided, or grab something from the onsite caf. There is a third option now for hungry patrons, with a newly opened Subway. Last spring, we purchased

a family membership, and we have easily used it enough times to make that investment a great value. Sometimes the kids and I will have a few hours open up in the afternoon and zip up for a

few hours. We may not have time to see every-thing, but thats okay. Well be back soon to catch what we missed. Every time we visit

the science center, I pack extra clothing for my children. By far,

their favorite spot in the vast building is the KidSpace water area. Flanked by benches for the parents, kids wear bright blue smocks meant to keep water off the kids clothing which work with varying de-grees of success. The siren song of the Lego water table pulls my boy in and keeps him there for as long as Ill allow, while his lit-tle sister grabs a container and gets to work filling, dumping, refilling, and transferring wa-ter from one water table to an-other. There are bright plastic balls that are sucked into clear tubes and spit out somewhere else. Its very cool, and even though youll see it as soon as you enter the center, make it your last stop, not your first, to keep clothing dry until the end. The Connecticut Science

Center is a wonderful place to spend a cold, winter day, with or without children. It is located at 250 Columbus Boulevard, Hartford, near the conven-tion center. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is available in the garage. See more information at www.CTsciencecenter.org.

Patrick has been a participant in the Nutmeg State Games since 2009.He works on the ice to bet-

ter his game, and off the ice to better his future. The Middle School of Plainville sixth grader boasts a 3.81 grade-point average and has already given thought to a career in engineering if hockey isnt in his future, noting that math is his favorite subject in school. He has also begun to look at

potential high schools. Avon Old Farms is at the top of the list. I believe that it has both a strong hockey and academic

programs, said Patrick.Aside from his academics,

Patrick keeps busy with la-crosse in the spring and rugby in the summer months prior to playing annually for the Connecticut Yankees of the Eastern Hockey Federation.Watching Patrick become

a more technical goalie, a stu-dent of the position, is one of the greatest feelings I get watching him play; just watch-ing him take what hes learning and applying it to his craft, Jay Creel said.Patrick enjoys analyz-

ing the play of NHL goal-ies in the hopes of learning new strategies to use on the ice, especially Marc Andre-Fleury of his favorite team,

the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Pekka Rinne of the Nashville Predators.Theyre both very technical

goalies and they both are very tall, Patrick said. Im proba-bly going to be a little taller, so Im watching the moves that I might be able to do.Patricks proficiency in net

helped his team to a state championship in 2013, as well as a New England champion-ship. Also, it helped him land a spot on the Westchester Express for next season. The Express, out of New York, is a top tier Triple-A youth team.I think the best part (about

hockey) is the competition Im playing against, said Patrick. And being able to play with my friends, and make new friends.

Wednesday, March 5, students from Plainville High School attended the Connecticut Association of Boards of Educations (CABE) annual Day on the Hill event in which they, along with princi-pals, superintendents, school board members, parents and other students from across the state, convened to voice their opinions and meet with legis-lators regarding education in Connecticut. The day began with a brief-

ing of issues at The Bushnells Autorino Great Hall, includ-ing the governors proposed budget and its effect on local schools districts, with CABE and the legislative leadership. Remarks were made by Gov. Malloy, Sen. Beth Bye, Sen. Toni Boucher, and Rep. Andy Fleischmann.Students, principals, su-

perintendents, school board members, parents, and other attendees then marched to the Hill to visit one-on-one with their legislators at the State Legislative Office Building.Representing Plainville

Schools were students Jacob Masco and McKenna Rita, Superintendent Jeff Kitching, Board Member Foster White, and CABE Resolutions Chair/Board Member Becky Tyrrell.Other districts represented

with students at the event in-cluded: Branford, Canton, East Granby, Granby, Killingly, Madison, Montville, Plainfield, Simsbury, Stratford, Waterbury, and the Academy of Aerospace and Engineering.

    SportsStorybook season continues for cheerleaders

These arent your parents cheerleaders.Actually, theyre unlike

any cheerleaders that have gone before them. For the f irst time in

school history, the Plainville High School cheerleaders will compete in the New England regionals, which will be held this weekend in Massachusetts, after finish-ing second in the Class M state competition. We werent sure if we

were going to make top three, because we have a re-ally difficult class, PHS se-

nior Kristen Couture said. After we competed, we were thinking we might make top three. So when we got sec-ond, we were ecstatic. The local girls finished

with a score of 163.5, second only to St. Joseph (173.4). Twenty teams competed in Class M.Although the results at the

2014 Central Connecticut Conference championships were similar to that of last year, as the PHS cheerlead-ers won yet another divi-sion title, the path to their success was different this winter. We actually have a lot of

new girls, so when we started

our routine, we started hit-ting it rather quickly, senior Tiffany Goodall said. Last year, we had to work and take stuff out, and water our stunts down. And we kept getting things so quickly this year. I think our skill level

was a little bit higher, in each individual, too. With so much time ded-

icated to their craft, the Plainville cheerleaders have high hopes for this weekend.Obviously, it would be

ideal to do great and place,

but realistically, our main goal is always to hit and make sure nothing in our rou-tine falls, and that we have a clean routine, Couture said. And from there, we just hope for the best.

Answers hard to find in keeping 3-game playoffs

Playing too many football games in too short a time hasnt yet been a concern of Platt coach Jason Bruenn.Bruenn wishes he could

address it from experience, but the Panthers were elim-inated from the playoffs in the quarterfinals in their last three appearances 2010, 2012 and 2013.Thus, he had no reference

when the CIAC Football Committee voted Feb. 25

to reduce the playoffs from three tiers to two.Its not an issue, he said.

We havent gotten past the first round, but I can under-stand where theyre coming from. You have to appease the medical field, which is putting a push on because of the whole concussion thing.Platts quarterfinal game

against North Haven in December came four days after its Stoddard Bowl conquest of Maloney on Thanksgiving.I know that Thanksgiving

to Tuesday is difficult, he said. Normally you get at least six days [to recuper-ate]. The worst case during the season is having to go from Saturday to Friday so you dont get the rest youre used to.I wish I could say weve

done it three or four times, but I know playing two within five days is difficult. We did it in 1997 when I was the defen-sive assistant. We had a great game against Plainville and

A group that continues to blossom, the Plainville Senior Centers Snappy Seniors Club, is holding its third annual photo exhibit at the Plainville Public Library through the end of March.Judy Humphrey, who

formed the group three years ago as a photography course that taught the basics, said the class started with about nine people, and now has around 30.With so many members

now, this year Humphrey had to limit the number of photos each member could exhibit at the library. About 105 photos are on display. Its mostly to get people

out and have fun and take photos they could be proud of and show off, Humphrey said of the clubs aim.You can find a lot of good

pictures, Humphrey said. All you have to do is open your door and look in your backyard.Fred Kennedy made use of

all five slots available to him in the exhibit, and submit-ted photos of a red tail hawk in his backyard, a sunset, a winter landscape, the Grand Canyon, and a tall ship sail-ing in Maine.I didnt have any [pho-

tography] experience when it was made available, Kennedy said, referring to the club. I said I gotta get on to this.Marilyn May joined the

Snappy Seniors when a friend asked her to go on one of the clubs field trips. The group travels regularly and has been to such places as Elizabeth Park in West Hartford and Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory in Massachusetts.I know Ive progressed

a lot, May said of her pho-tography. When you go out, you take your camera with you.Its a fun experience and

a way to get people out and interested in different things and to see how they can improve their skills, said Humphrey, who teaches the Snappy Seniors to focus on a subject in order to really tell

a story, while using composi-tion and lighting for optimal results. One of Humphreys pho-

tos on display is of her adult son eating off a plate of food while playing in his Irish band. The band didnt take a break during the set, so Humphrey cut up some food so that her son could eat while playing.Don Liljedahl is one of

the original members of the Snappy Seniors. He joined because he wanted to take better pictures that he could then paint.

This is all I wanna do, Liljedahl said, of painting. I dont like taking pictures for calendars. Most of Liljedahls exhibit

photos were captured in his backyard. Things like birds, pumpkins, and other scenic photos were in the mix.Rita Ribal, who joined the

Snappy Seniors two years ago, and Gene Kelsey, a member from the start, both joined in order to take better pictures.Ribal, who has a photo of

a lily pad on display at the library, said she couldnt

take a picture worth beans before, and that the group opened her eyes to her sur-roundings. You notice things you didnt notice be-fore, she said.Kelsey displayed a photo

of the Iwo Jima monument in New Britain. He said he mostly gets his photo inspi-

ration from simply driving around. Most of the Snappy

Seniors photos on display are available for purchase. Each one costs $20 and comes matted. The display is located on the main level of the library, 56 E. Main St.

    Playoffs

then lost to Weaver in the championship.Like his coaching col-

leagues on the football committee, Bruenn would welcome a three-tier play-off, but given the vital-ity of Thanksgiving games and the threat of inclem-ent weather in mid-Decem-ber, he agrees solutions are

hard to find. Some commit-tee members feel so strongly about the three-tier system that they would be willing to start the playoffs before Thanksgiving, making the ri-valry games across the state meaningless when it comes to postseason qualification.I dont have any idea

how they could get it done because nobody wants to [reduce the meaning] of

Thanksgiving games, he said. There are so many factors that no matter what they come up with, it isnt going to sit right with some people. Some administrators feel

that the reduced meaning of Thanksgiving games will af-fect the size of the crowd. The athletic directors

want that huge gate, Bruenn said. We havent had the big turnouts we used to, but they still make a lot of money. I know because I can see our AD (Rich Katz) smile. The Football Committee

has opted to split each of the four divisions in half and crown eight champions. Bruenn feels thats too many.Eight champions in a

state this small? Texas has only five, he said. Its just too many. And can

you imagine if Southington wins one LL division and Fairfield Prep wins the other that they wouldnt want to play? Its a travesty.
