Letters From The Desk
Social work is an exceptionally interesting, challenging and rewarding profession to enter. It relies on your energy,
enthusiasm, creativity and personal resilience. It also depends on your capacity to put knowledge to effective use.
That knowledge can take many forms: research evidence drawn from the psychological and social sciences;
knowledge of policy and legislation that provides the context for contemporary practice and; knowledge drawn
from the experience of practitioners and service users.
The social work programme at Jamia Millia Islamia is designed to enable the students to understand, analyse,
practise and evaluate the knowledge, skills and values of social work in its theoretical, organisational and
professional contexts.
I am delighted to introduce to you the outgoing batch of the students of M.A. Social Work. These students were
selected through an all India competition. They have undergone two years (4 semesters) of intense training in core
social work methods and techniques, along with more than 150 hours of field training each semester. The core skills
of the students are developed through the Behavioural and Personality Enrichment Laboratory, Extension Lectures,
Rural Camp etc.
I invite you to visit the campus, interact with our students and recruit them for possible openings in your
organization. I am confident that these students will prove an asset to whichever organization they choose to join.

Jamia Millia Islamia is one of the premier universities of national

Department of Social Work (UGC Centre for Advanced Studies)
The Department of Social Work with its precursor the Jamia School of Social Work came into being over 40 years ago to give yet another
expression to Jamia's historic mission of service to the community. Jamia was known, among other activities, for rendering services to the
neighbourhood through adult education programmes including night schools, literacy centers, and libraries for neo-literate, recreation for
youth, and training of women and girls for their future social and economic roles.
Establishment of Jamia School of Social Work with the introduction of Bachelors Programme in Social Work in 1967 was a pioneering effort to
professionalize Social Work Education and Practice, and to cater to the emerging demand of social work professionals at the field and
supervisory levels. Introduction of a Masters and a Doctorate Programme in Social Work in 1976 and a Masters Programme in Human
Resource Management in 1993 have been some major milestones in the vibrant history of the Department.
The Department has been associated with several National and International organizations including corporate houses, non-governmental
organizations, public sector and autonomous organizations, various ministries of the government, different consultancy organizations and
reputed academic institutions. The department's community outreach programme was instrumental in the setting up of the Zakir Husain
Memorial Welfare Society and the Child Guidance Centre.
In recognition of its contribution in the field of social work, education and research, the University Grants Commission (UGC), accorded the
status of Department of Special Assistance (DSA) in the year 1991 which was followed by two more phases of DSA. It was the first department
in Jamia, and the youngest Social Work department in the country, to earn this status. The department was also sanctioned assistance from
UGC under the ASSISH programme (2005-2010). The DSA and ASSISH put together have strengthened the department in terms of academic
quality and infrastructure building.
All class rooms have the facility of a LCD projector, enabling teachers to use the latest innovations in ICT to impart class room teaching. The
Department also has a fullyfurnished and well-equipped Seminar Room where various skill development laboratories, extension lectures,
seminars and special lectures etc are organized to supplement the class room teaching. In addition to the University library, the Department
also has a library of its own with a collection of approximately 1500 books on various subjects and topics such as Social Work, Human
Resource Management, Social Policy, NGO Management, Research methodology etc. The Social Work Department is also equipped with a
computer lab catering to the research needs of the students and the faculty.
Keeping in view the significant achievements as well as potential for excellence, the department was recently upgraded as the UGC Centre for
Advanced Study in April 2010. The UGC CAS programme has, by providing the required infrastructure, enabled the department to focus on
developing new areas like:

The M.A. Social Work curriculum entails extensive classroom teaching in conjunction with concurrent fieldwork training throughout the two
year duration. This classroom teaching and fieldwork training is facilitated and enriched through various modules such as the following:
Modes of Learning
ORIENTATION PROGRAMME
A weeklong orientation programme is designed and conducted for every
batch with the purpose to get an acquaintance with the nature and content
of the course. Working professionals from various fields are invited to
share their experiences. A three-day communication lab strengthens the
seven-day orientation programme, where the students get an opportunity
to display and enhance their communication skills.
ASSIGNMENTS AND PRESENTATIONS
As part of internal assessment, every student has to prepare an assignment
for every paper. Every assignment presents a comprehensive study of the
particular topic where the special focus is on the concerned student's
perspective and his/her personal opinion about the topic relating to the
field experiences as much as possible. The students are also required to
give an audio-visual presentation of their assignments before the whole
class and the respective teacher.
RURAL CAMP
The department organizes an educational camp for M.A. (Social Work) first
year students in a rural area, every year as a part of the course curriculum.
The camp is the best place to sharpen the skills of rapport formation,
situation analysis and awareness generation on a range of issues in the
rural community. Every student develops an understanding of group
dynamics and power structures in a rural community. They also sharpen
their skills of group living and learn to initiate the development of
attitudes conducive for effective teamwork. This batch went to
Pattikaliyana, a village in Samalkha district of Haryana. The camp was
focussed on comprehensive theoretical inputs and practical utilisation
of PRA techniques and other skills.
INDIVIDUAL CONFERENCE
Individual conference is a guided interaction between the students and
the assigned faculty supervisor to analyze issue and problems arising out
of fieldwork experiences. It focuses on work assignment and work
schedule, analysis of client systems and problem situation. It enhances
the recording skills of the students and facilitates the evaluation of
learning level achieved.

are provided opportunities to translate abstract knowledge
acquired from classroom learning into practical applications. Field
Practicum also aims at providing hands on experience to deal with a
variety of complex problems.
The Social Work profession caters to a variety of practice areas such
as education, health, livelihoods, child abuse, domestic violence,
care of the elderly, HIV/AIDS, reproductive and sexual health,
disability etc. at the levels of individual, groups and communities
and also the broader level of policy analysis and modification. The
students therefore are placed with governmental and non-

This year, the Subject Association of the department organized a socio-cultural
festival-Ibtida. The theme of the festival was inclusive development.
A significant number of events like intra faculty debate competition, JAM,
street theatre competition and music competitions were held.
INTER-AGENCY MEET
The Inter Agency Sports and Cultural Meet organized by the department provided
a platform for interaction between children from the various communities in which
the students are placed as trainees through their fieldwork organizations. The
children participated in a variety of sports and cultural events which were
coordinated and managed by the students under the supervision of faculty members.
ALUMNI MEET
The Alumni Meet organized by the department provided the current batch with a
platform to interact with their seniors. It also helped to ensure that the current
students learn from the experience of their predecessors and uphold high
professional standards.
Student Activities
MEDICINE FOR NEEDY INITIATIVE
Joining hands with Sri Omkar Nath, popularly known as Medicine Baba,
the students of the department have initiated a programme under
which unused but usable medicines are collected from people and this
precious resource is then redistributed to those in need.
20
ABC CAMPAIGN
With the intention of sharing knowledge and providing opportunities to those who are deprived of it, ABC Campaign is a unique initiative
taken solely by the students of the department which aims to provide basic education to the children of construction workers involved in
construction work going on with the university campus.
Student Activities
SPORTS DAY
Sports day is an annual event initiated by the students to encourage
them towards extra-curricular activities. Activities involve both indoor
and outdoor events like race, cricket, fun games, etc.
