The then Prime Minister of India, Late Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru arrivingto inaugurate the Silver Jubilee Session of the Central Board of Irrigation& Power in 1952

Inauguration of India Water Week 2012 by Hon’ble Prime Minister ofIndia Dr. Manmohan Singh on 10th April 2012 at Vigan Bhawan, NewDelhi.

MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARYCentral Board of Irrigation and Power, set up by the Government of India in the pre independence era,has been rendering dedicated services to the professional organizations, engineers and individuals inthe country related to Power, Irrigation and Renewable Energy Sectors. CBIP, with its main objective todisseminate technical knowledge, has been organizing training programmes for the last more than 80years since its inception and has always been taking strides in providing meaningful training to the powersector personnel. The Indian power sector headed record capacity addition during the 11th plan and the total generatinginstalled capacity stood at around 2,00,000 MW by the end of the plan. To cater the further shortage ofgrowing power demand of the country, Govt. of India has taken initiative of adding 123900 MW during the12th plan. To cope up with this key initiative, it is evident that additional 400000 trained manpower will berequired. It is therefore, the need of the day that reputed institutes of the country also supplement the

above efforts of the Govt. of India for the human resources development of Power Sector. In view of this, CBIP has taken uptraining as a new thrust area to provide groomed manpower for meeting the requirements of power sector. Starting of 52 weeksPost Graduate Diploma Course in Thermal Power Plant Engineering in September 2011 and 26 weeks Post Graduate DiplomaCourse in Transmission & Distribution are the first few links of this process chain. As CBIP has started placement session for these engineer trainees who have already undergone more than eight monthsrigorous training (both theoretical & on-job practical) at CBIP, I extend my cordial invitation to all the power utilities of India PowerSector to come to our institute and take advantage of this initiative of CBIP by considering these trained engineers for suitableplacement in their organization.

V.K. Kanjlia,Secretary

Central Board of Irrigation & Power

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTORCommensurate with the huge capacity addition during 12th and 13th plan, there is a necessity of adequatetrained man power for design, engineering, manufacturing, erection and commissioning as well as for O&Mof power plants. With an aim to supplement the Indian Power Sector with groomed manpower, CBIP hastaken stride to launch its 1st “52 weeks Post Graduate Diploma Course in Thermal Power Plant Engineering”.The fresh engineers of this batch have already acquired sufficient competency level during their eightmonths rigorous training in key areas of Thermal Power Plants and after completion of the entire course willbe competent to take over the charge of Operation & Maintenance of Power station. Placing these engineersin any power utilities /organizations will not only be a win-win strategy for all including the employer, thetrained engineers and CBIP, but it will also be a great contribution to the Indian Power Sector.I would heartily welcome all the stake holders and the industries to our campus for placement of our trained student engineers.

C.S. MalikDirector, CBIP

of various ranges including 210 MW as the base.• These engineers have learnt various testing procedures in the lab and various workshops.• The engineers have been given exposure of the manufacturing sites of various equipments related to Thermal Power

Plants.• The engineers have been given exposure to the practical work which has helped them to build confidence for doing job.• The engineers have been given exposure on the Off job ,hands on training on 210 MW PC Based Real Time Power Plant

Training Simulator which has helped them to know to reduce plant trip & trouble free start up & optimum usage of resourcesfor less down time and lower costs.

COURSE OVERVIEWIn response to the advertisement of 52 weeks Post Graduate Diploma Course in Thermal Power Plant Engineering in the month ofJuly, 2012, many students applied against this advertisement. Of all the applicants 62 candidates in different Engineering Streams(Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Communication, Instrumentation) were selected on the basis of the tenth, twelfth and engineering with minimum 60% at all three stages. For selection weight-age of 10%, 20% and 70% respectively wasadopted. The course started on 26th September, 2011 and was inaugurated by Shri.A.S. Bakshi, Chairperson, CEA.The course is practical oriented training in which the students are trained at various Power stations, manufacturing units likeBHEL, ABB etc. Operation and Maintenance on-job have been carried out in NTPC and IPGCL/PPCL power plants.

ABOUT CBIPCentral Board of Irrigation & Power was set up by the Government of India for monitoring of Irrigation of our country in 1927. FROM THE PLACEMENTCOORDINATOR'S DESK

With an aim to deliver a pool of trainedengineers in the area of O&M of ThermalPower Plants of Indian Power Sector,CBIP has started this 52 weeks PGDCprogramme in Thermal Power PlantEngineering following the syllabus as perthe regulation of Indian Electricity Act. Weassure you that the inputs given to these

participants are quite practical oriented and are the best ascompared to any of the institutes conducting this course inour country.

We shall be happy if your esteemed organization visits CBIP tojudge the capability, aptitude and knowledge level of thesegroomed engineers and give them a chance to serve yourorganization and the Indian power sector.

S.K. GHOSHAdvisor (Energy)

FROM THE COURSECOORDINATOR’S DESK

The engineers have undergoneTheoretical inputs along with practicalexposure of Thermal Power Plants ofvarious ratings.

After completion of the 52 weeks program, the students become the groomed practicalPower Engineers and can take the respon-sibilities of the O&M of power plants. These

engineers have been evaluated continuously at the end ofeach module so that their performance and confidence levelis enhanced.

We do hope that the organizations would be highly benefitedby inducting these trained engineers at their plants.
