Wednesday, 18th September 2019 DATES TO REMEMBER

PRINCIPAL STARS OF THE WEEK – 5/6EA This week I was visited by some very talented Stage 3 students from 5/6EA who shared a variety of work with me. Wow, what a challenging Maths puzzle I was presented with by Shayla W. Each day the students in 5/6EA are presented with a numbers game based on the SBS show ‘Letters and Numbers’. Can you solve this puzzle?

Using any combination of the following numbers – 75, 75, 75, 100, 25 and 4 can you come up with a number sentence that = 478. You can only use each number once and you don’t have to use every single number to get your answer. Blaise M took me through his BTN report. Each week, Blaise and his classmates watch a ‘Behind The News’ story and take notes about core topics. Recently, 5/6EA watched a report about Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas. Finally, Keira E fascinated me with some interesting facts about Mars as part of her research during the Science Unit, ‘Earth and Space.’ Here are some of the fun-facts Keira shared with me: 1. The symbol for Mars is a shield and spear. 2. Only 18 trips to Mars have been successful. 3. Mars has 2 moons – Phobos and Deimos.

Keep up the great work, 5/EA!

Foyer Display – 5/6W Take a look at this fantastic artwork on display in the front foyer! 5/6W feel very strongly about BULLYING and have designed some fantastic posters which include some great anti-bullying messages. Congratulations to Travis C, Jade E, Lainey G, Liam

D, Phoebe M, Lacey M, Melody W and Chloe W who were all chosen to display their great work!

Student Safety – Before School Supervision It has come to my attention of late that increased numbers of students are arriving at school well before morning supervision is provided at 8:25 am. I urge all parents and carers not to send their children to school before this time for safety and child protection reasons. If you are unable to make suitable arrangements for your child’s supervision before or after school, please consider taking advantage of the wonderful service that our friends from TASK (The After School Klub) provide – you can enroll your child with TASK by email ([email protected]) or by phone 1300 827 500.

P&C News – ObstAcool Due to the ongoing wet weather the P&C ObstAcool fundraising event has been postponed until Tuesday, 15 October.

NAPLAN – Student Results On Monday, students in Years 3 and 5 will receive their individual NAPLAN reports. Class teachers have begun to analyse the results and determine areas of strength and need in each of these grades, to inform planning for focussed teaching and learning across the school. Whilst the results from the NAPLAN tests provide the Department of Education and schools with important information relating to how students are progressing in aspects of literacy and numeracy compared to the State and other like schools, it is important to remember that these tests are just a ‘snapshot in time’ and reflect how the students have performed on one day during a small testing period and do not necessarily reflect your child’s overall skills and capabilities in other aspects of their learning which make them unique and talented in their own way. If you have questions or concerns about your child’s academic growth and development, you are welcome to contact the school and make an appointment to speak with your class teacher.

Safe and Happy Holidays! It is hard to believe that Term 3 is coming to an end next week – where have those 3 school terms gone? I would like to thank everyone who has assisted the school throughout this very busy term, highlighted by the very successful Book Parade and Book Fair. Other key initiatives and events that took place this term included Education Week Open Day, the Stage 3 Sydney Observatory Excursion, Father’s Day celebrations, Life Education, Year 2 Swimming Scheme, Kinder Reptile Park Excursion, NAIDOC Week activities, P&C Trivia Night and the school Athletics Carnival. Congratulations to all of the teachers and students who have successfully competed in a number of sporting events over the past term at a school, zone and regional level. Academically, we also applaud the efforts of those students and teachers involved in the ICAS Competitions, Premiers Spelling Bee Competition, debating, CC Public Speaking Competition and those amazing students who were recognised for excellence as part of the Cooinda AECG awards and the Valley Schools Learning Community awards. I would like to wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday period. School resumes for all students and teachers on Monday 14 October.

School Security As we approach the Spring break, I ask all families who live in close proximity of the school to report any suspicious activity on our school grounds to Wyong Police (4356 6099) or the School Security Unit (1300 880 021).

Page 4: Place Newsletter Name Here - ourimbah-p.schools.nsw.gov.au · If you are unable to make suitable arrangements for your child’s supervision before or after school, please consider

If you notice damage to school property, anti-social conduct or suspicious activity on the grounds, or after school hours, please do not hesitate to call the abovementioned numbers. The school is very proud of its grounds and the positive partnership it has with the broader community - it would be a shame to lose this identity! Kind regards, Greg Francis (Principal) CLASSY ARTICLE – 5/6EA For a warm-up maths activity 5/6EA enjoy having a go at ‘The Numbers Game’. This is based on the TV series ‘Letters and Numbers’ on SBS. The challenge is to get as close as you can to the target number, using only the numbers given. To make it a little more interesting, you can choose how many small and large numbers you are given each game. Our Integrated Unit this term is, ‘A Diverse and Connected World’. Throughout this term, students have been working on a travel project to plan a holiday to a country of their choice. During computer time, students have been creating an A4 travel poster persuading others why they should visit the country they have chosen. They have researched the best time of year to travel, some cultural traditions, interesting sites to see, activities to do and traditional foods. For the last couple of weeks, Year 6 have been preparing for their Mini Fete, which is on Friday, 18th October. They have been designing posters, which have been put up around the school playground, detailing the stall they are running. They have also been thinking about the resources and prizes needed to run their stall. The Year 6 Mini Fete is always an exciting time for the whole school.

ATTENTION ALL PARENTS Change to money & permission note procedures To enhance quality teaching time in the classroom, the decision has been made that all money and permission notes will now be processed through the office. Notes and money will NO LONGER go to the classroom, but will instead be placed by the students or parents into a

secure box in the office foyer. This is in line with the Departments money handling policies. All money and notes will need to be in a clearly marked sealed envelope with the student’s name, class and event on the front. The office will receipt the money, collate the notes and then pass on to the class teacher. CANTEEN NEWS IOU's for this term will be sent home by the end of this week. Your prompt payment of these IOU’s would be greatly appreciated. Beginning from next term, the canteen will be implementing a new policy - if you have an outstanding IOU’s from the previous term, these will need to be paid in full, before any further IOU's will be permitted. I appreciate your understanding in advance regarding this matter. I’d also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful break over the school holidays and thank you again for continuing to support our school canteen. YEAR 6 MINI FETE NEWS Organisation: The Year 6 Mini Fete will be held on Friday, 18th October in the school grounds. Each class will attend the Mini Fete for approximately one hour. This event is for students only. The Year 6 students have been working very hard, planning and organising their stalls and they are looking forward to the support of our other students in making the Mini Fete a great success. Proceeds from the Mini Fete will go towards the Year 6 Farewell and other associated activities at the end of the year. The students will be able to purchase tickets on the morning of the Fete and/or during their Fete time slot from Year 6 students and staff outside the office. No money will be exchanged at the stalls, each stall’s pricing is an amount of tickets, each ticket will be worth 50c. Students will then use these tickets to purchase items from the stalls or to participate in the activities provided by the Year 6 students. If possible, we ask that children bring their money to spend at the Fete in coins rather than notes to assist in the giving of change. The children, in the past, have brought no more than $20 to spend. More information will come over the next few weeks and in Week 1 of next term. Keep an eye out for information on our stalls and events on the day.

SUMMER UNIFORM The summer uniform is officially to be worn by students from the start of Term 4.

We would like to thank all of the parents who took the time to complete and return the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire that was distributed to all Kindergarten-Year 2 (Early Stage One and Stage One) students earlier this term. The results of this questionnaire helps to identify which children would benefit from being included in the Getting on Track in Time (Got It!) targeted groups, which will be running in our school next term. By filling in the questionnaire you have also helped us to gain a better understanding of the needs of children and their families at Ourimbah Public School. This information will contribute to helping schools and health professionals provide better services in the future. Those families selected for involvement in the group program have already been contacted. If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further, please contact the Got It! Team on (02) 4328 7370. SPELLING BEE REGIONAL FINALS Well done to Jayden C, Coco M, Holly O and Bailey C who went to Warnervale Public School last Tuesday to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee Finals. The students all enjoyed the day and we are very proud of their efforts. Ms Adams BOOK FAIR AND BOOK PARADE In week 6, students were excited to be given the opportunity to view and purchase new books, posters and fun stationary at the Book Fair. Thank you for your exceptional support throughout the week. The school has received a commission of 2206 points! These points are used to purchase literacy resources and more books for our school library from Scholastic. Thank you to our parents and carers for helping the students get involved in our Book Character Parade. It is always spectacular to see the students and community being engaged with literacy. Students and staff had a wonderful time and looked fabulous dressing up to the theme of ‘Reading is my Secret Power’.

INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY: 2040 COMMUNITY SCREENING - Ourimbah Uni Campus Our society, with the help of local business, is holding a screening of the new documentary on sustainability and innovation '2040'. This documentary comes from Damon Gameau, the director of 'That Sugar Film', an inspirational journey to discover what the future could look like if we simply embraced the best that exists today. The event will start off with a short presentation by our guest speakers from Take 3 for the Sea and the Community Environment Network who will be discussing current local strategies to prevent pollution. At 6:30pm the film will begin, exploring the positive impact of sustained innovation and growth, and how accepting change now would have incredible impacts on how we, and future generations treat the world around us.
