PKF – Prague Philharmonia came into existence in 1994, originallyunder the name Prague Chamber Philharmonia, on the initiativeof the internationally renowned conductor Jiří Bělohlávek. The youngensemble brought onto the Czech, and later global, music scenea breath of fresh air and a contagious musical zest that can be still feltin their performances to this day. It did not take long for the PKF tobecome one of the most respected orchestras in the Czech Republicand to build an excellent reputation in Europe and the world.
What is valued most in respect of this ensemble is its characteristicsound; the continual and keen input of its founder Jiří Bělohlávek and the orchestra’s main area of repertoire, Viennese Classicism, both underpin this uniqueness. Nevertheless, when needed, the scopeof the repertoire is widened to include the Baroque era as well as contemporary music. The orchestra comprises 52 permanentmembers, with Jan Fišer and Lukáš Pospíšil the concert masters.
Jiří Bělohlávek stood at the helm of the orchestra until 2005, laterbecoming its Conductor Laureate. The Swiss conductor and flautistKaspar Zehnder was the PKF – Prague Philharmonia’s second chiefconductor in the years 2005–08. From the 2008–09 seasonthe orchestra was led by its chief conductor and music director JakubHrůša, who already at his young age enjoys international acclaim.

Jean-Guihen Queyras, Iva Bittová, Peter Dvorský, Dagmar Pecková and Bryan Hymel. The CDs are regularly acclaimed by internationalcritics and awarded prizes (Gold Disc RAC Canada in 2000, the FrenchDiapason d’Or 2007). The CD with Bryan Hymel was nominated for the International Opera Award in 2016.
PKF – Prague Philharmonia offers its home audiences a seriesof orchestral concerts, a chamber series, a series of contemporarymusic titled ‘The Beauty of Today’, and special concerts for children.The orchestra is the country’s pioneering ensemble as far aseducational activities are concerned, offering opportunities through its children’s club Notička and at the Orchestral Academy.
PKF – Prague Philharmonia is financially supported by the Cityof Prague and the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.
At the beginning of the 2015–16 season the post of music director andchief conductor was assumed by the distinguished French conductorEmmanuel Villaume. In his first season in this role the orchestra was presented with new challenges, such as the addition of Frenchimpressionism and late Romanticism to the repertoire. Villaume willbe also leading the orchestra on its major USA tour in 2017, whichfeatures the excellent soloists Gautier Capuçon, Sarah Chang andAndrew von Oeyen.
PKF – Prague Philharmonia is regularly invited to international musicfestivals, has performed in the world’s foremost venues (Royal OperaMuscat in Oman, Tokyo, Paris, Munich, and Verona) and collaboratesregularly with world-renowned conductors and leadinginstrumentalists and singers. Among them are: Vladimir Ashkenazy,Milan Turković, Marta Argerich, Julian Rachlin, Jefim Bronfman,András Schiff, Shlomo Mintz, Sarah Chang, Isabelle Faust, MischaMaisky, Magdalena Kožená, Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, NatalieDessay, Rolando Villazón, Plácido Domingo, Elina Garanča, Juan DiegoFlórez and Thomas Hampson.
So far the orchestra has recorded eight CDs for leading Czech andworld labels, including Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, Supraphon,EMI, Warner Music and Harmonia Mundi. To collaborate on theserecordings PKF – Prague Philharmonia invited soloists such as AnnaNetrebko, Eva Urbanová, Magdalena Kožená, Isabelle Faust,

Emmanuel VillaumeThe French-born conductor Emmanuel Villaume began his tenure as Music Director and Chief Conductor of PKF – Prague Philharmoniain September 2015. This nomination was the result of his previoussuccessful collaboration with the orchestra on several projects,including the Deutsche Grammophon recording with Anna Netrebkoand a Warner Classics release with Bryan Hymel. The conductor andorchestra also gave a number of concerts at home and abroad,including twice as a guest orchestra at a special New Year's GalaConcert at the Royal Opera House Muscat, Oman.
In his fourth season as Music Director of The Dallas Opera, MaestroVillaume led the company's last season in performances of Tosca,Show Boat, and the world premiere of Mark Adamo's Becoming SantaClaus. Guest engagements in the US last season included Romeo and Juliet at the Lyric Opera, Chicago. Following his triumph withManon at the Royal Opera House in London in 2014, Villaumereturned to Covent Garden for performances of Tosca, which wereenthusiastically received. ‘That the rest of it [the performance] is, for the most part, comparably fine, is due in no small measure to Emmanuel Villaume’s conducting – intense, passionate anddetailed, yet always considerate of the singers, who are neverswamped by the orchestra,’ wrote Tim Ashley in the Guardian about the performance.
Outside the USA he has conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestrain London, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre Philharmonique de RadioFrance, Orchestr Beethovenhalle Bonn, Munich Radio SymphonyOrchestra, Die Duisburger Philharmoniker, Danish NationalSymphony Orchestra, Norwegian Radio Orchestra, KungligaFilharmonikerna in Stockholm and PKF – Prague Philharmonia.In Australia he conducted concerts with the Sydney, Melbourne andBrisbane orchestras and in Asia he performed with Tokyo SymphonyOrchestra NHK, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and ChinaState Opera orchestra during the Olympic Games in 2008.
Emmanuel Villaume was born in Strasbourg, in 1964 and studiedmusic at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg, followed by studies at École normale superieure and at Sorbonne, where he graduatedin literature, philosophy and musicology. As an author of notedarticles of musicology he was appointed artistic programmer at Opéranational du Rhin at the age of 21. He also holds an honorary doctoratefrom the University of Indianapolis. Maestro Villaume collaborates frequently with major opera housesin the United States and in Europe. Among other prestigious operacompanies where he has been frequently conducting are: Opéra deMontreal, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, Teatro Colon in Madrid, Opéra Bastillein Paris, Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, Opéra Marseille, Teatro La Fenice, Teatro Regio di Torino, Teatro Real in Madrid, and manyopera houses in Germany including Bayerische Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Staatsoper Hamburg, opera houses in Bonn and Cologne.
In his distinguished career maestro Villaume has conducted a numberof leading symphonic orchestras around the world. He was alsoartistic director and chief conductor of the Slovenian PhilharmonicOrchestra, as well as chief conductor of the Slovak PhilharmonicOrchestra. In 2001-2010 he was artistic director of the Spoleto Festival.In North America the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, MontrealSymphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Los AngelesPhilharmonic and The Julliard Orchestra all performed under hisbaton. He also gave concerts with the San Francisco Symphony,Houston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Symphony in BostonSymphony Hall, and at the music festival in Tanglewood.

Dear Friends of the PKF – Prague Philharmonia,This is the fourth time that I have the honour to address you from thisposition. On every occasion I have informed you about the main tasksof the Managing Board, of which I am Chairman. Apart from workingclosely with Mr. Emmanuel Villaume, the Director of Music and ChiefConductor, and with Director Mr. Radim Otépka, the tasks mainlyconcern issues of strategy, finance and operational matters, hencesubjects outside of the artistic activities of our excellent orchestra.And the same can be said of the last season, and the coming seasonas well. As the managing board we are aware that these two areascannot be separated – for the orchestra to work well it needs a calm,favourable environment and financial stability. Not everythingdevelops to our satisfaction, not everything can be solved in time, and not always do the results of our efforts come immediately. But we shall not relent in our endeavours, and will continue to striveto be a valid part of our collective whole. What helps us in this is the moment when we can sit down in the auditorium and listen to the orchestra’s performance. This, at least in me, always invokesa sense of pride, emotions and positive motivation; an assurance thatour work and efforts for the benefit of PKF – Prague Philharmoniamake sense. I enjoy every applause, every conductor’s praise, andpositive reviews by critics… I believe that you will experience similarfeelings with our PKF – Prague Philharmonia in the upcoming season.After all, we are here for you.

A third strong component of the season’s dramaturgy revolves aroundBrahms position in the middle of the so-called first and secondViennese school. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, in celebrationof the 260th anniversary of his birth, will be present throughout ourseason. Among many other works of a composer that has always beenat the centre of PKF repertoire, we will perform, as a mirror toBrahms’ Serenades, Mozart’s Divertimento for wind instruments as well as the Symphony in E-flat Major KV543 under the baton of Jiří Bělohlávek. Webern, on the other hand, with his Concerto forNine Instruments, will represent the second Viennese school. Czechcomposers of the twentieth and twenty first century will be presentedin our series The Beauty of Today, as well in our main series by a PKF commission for contemporary Czech composer Jiří Kadeřábek.
There are many more obvious or more subtle connections in ourprogrammes for you to discover; we hope you will enjoy them againin great numbers in some of the many wonderful venues Prague offersbeside our extraordinary Rudolfinum: the Spanish Hall, LobkowitzPalace, Smetana Hall at the Municipal House and Forum Karlin.
We will be again very busy with recording and touring activities.Notably, PKF – Prague Philharmonia will go on an important tour to the USA. In Europe we will accompany several distinguishedsoloists, and we shall also repeat the special collaboration withthe prestigious Royal Opera in Oman.
Music is an essential and powerful part of our lives. I cannot thinkof a better institution than PKF and its musicians and a better citythan Prague to share with the world this passion.

Dear Concertgoers and Friends of PKF,My first season at the head of our institution has been immenselyhumbling, intense and rewarding. Thanks to all of you, I feel I havealready developed a real connection with the audience and deepenedthe artistic relationship with our musicians. We had the pleasure tosuccessfully make music together in Prague and all over the worldin the most prestigious venues and we made several albums whichkeep winning awards, reinforcing both on stage and in recordingsthe exceptional international reputation of our beloved orchestra.
Last season was built around Martinů and his connection with Frenchmusic. For 2016/2017, in contrast, we will offer you to move to Vienna,around Johannes Brahms’ music. We hope to showcase the chambermusic side of his style through his two stunning and rarely performedserenades but also with some of his Hungarian Dances and even hisSecond Symphony, conducted by my predecessor Jakub Hruša.The season will culminate with his German Requiem.
As much as it is a serious responsibility, putting together a season is always a fun intellectual game. As we wanted to showcasethe virtuosity and versatility of our musicians in a solo capacity, we built a second “fil rouge” of our dramaturgy around works fororchestra and two soloists or more. Several of our members will be associated with world class instrumentalists such as EmmanuelPahud, Albrecht Mayer and Stephan Dohr. Furthermore, Louis Lortieand Helène Mercier will play Poulenc’s lovely and witty doubleconcerto.

Dear Listeners, our Friends,It is a great honour and pleasure for me to be able to address youagain via our new brochure. Our team, the PKF – PraguePhilharmonia headed by Chief conductor Emmanuel Villaume ledlong discussions about the shape and themes of the upcoming season.Over time our discussions brought a result that gives me realpleasure.
Looking at the new season, three key thematic areas stand out. First of all we highlight the virtuosity of PKF players by ‘matching’individual orchestra players with internationally renowned soloists(for example Oto Reiprich and Emmanuel Pahud, Lukáš Pospíšil andAlbrecht Mayer). This also touches on the theme of dialogue, be itamong musicians or musical styles. The second pillar is W. A. Mozart,or more precisely his 260th birth anniversary in 2016. PKF and Mozartare almost like one body; the works by this giant are, withoutexaggeration, imprinted in our orchestra’s DNA. That’s why Mozart’swork has been included in our concerts in the first half of 2016 and why he won’t be omitted from any concerts in the autumn partof 2016–17 season either. The third component is Johannes Brahms, as the German counterpart of the French programming in the lastseason and also another artistic goal for PKF.
This conceptual framework of our up-coming season allows forfurther, more subtle, links in the programmes of individual concertsof all series and enables us to present both chamber and orchestralworks across musical styles from late Baroque to contemporarymusic. It also reflects our main target: continuous progress andachieving top class interpretation.

Personally I very much look forward to the series The Beauty of Today,based on ‘pupil-teacher’ dialogue – evaluating this dualism in the21st century promises to bring audiences really special artisticenrichment. The ever-popular and sought-after chamber music series in the Museum of Czech Music will be carried out in the spiritof dialogues across centuries, and will again prove the strong qualityof our musicians in communicating through chamber music.

As you can see, we have prepared a rich and varied offering for you.I am sure the presented concept will hold its own against the mostexacting criteria you may have for the PKF, and believe that be itin Rudolfinum or in Forum Karlín, in the Spanish Hall at the PragueCastle or in the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art, together we shallexperience unique moments.
Apart from a good number of PKF – Prague Philharmonia’s ownprojects, the orchestra awaits many concerts at home and abroadin the coming season. I’m pleased to note that the orchestra will be presented in a month long tour in the USA, later in South Americaand other prestigious venues, in the Oman Royal Opera House and

I shall be happy to come back in the new season to an orchestra thatalways offers me an opportunity for spontaneous, totally unfetteredmusic making. This return is filled with emotions mixed witha modicum of pride, the feeling with which we observe oursuccessfully developing off-spring.

CHAMBER DIALoGUE ACRoss CEntURIEs
The PKF – Prague Philharmonia chamber music series will be againa guest in the inspirational setting of the Czech Museum of Music.The main theme of this season – dialogue – is reflected alsoin the programming of chamber music evenings. In this case,the imaginary dialogue is played out between various historical styles from the 17th century to this day. With brilliant virtuosity, PKF – Prague Philharmonia members will perform works by GeorgPhilipp Telemann, Ludwig van Beethoven, Claude Debussy and DmitriShostakovich. The 260th birth anniversary of W. A. Mozart and the120 years since the death of Johannes Brahms in 2017 will be highlighted.A special evening will be devoted to Bohuslav Martinů to markthe publication of the IV volume of the composer’s Complete Edition.
The musicologist Martina Cechová will guide listeners through the concerts.

A concert series of contemporary music THE BEAUTY OF TODAY, an established and at the same time exceptional PKF – PraguePhilharmonia project, will in the 2016–2017 season take up wherethe previous season ended. In the last season you were introduced,step by step, to music by six significant figures of Czech 20th-centurymusic. In this season, in each concert, we shall meet a couple, linkedby friendship, a teacher/pupil relationship or maybe a professionalpartnership. The focus of each evening will remain the same: music,performed by leading chamber soloists of PKF – Prague Philharmoniaand their guests, will constitute the core of each programme.
What will be unique is the presence of the composers, who will guideyou through their music during the concerts. An evening of congratulations to celebrate one of the most remarkablefigures in contemporary music, the Czech composer, conductor andflautist Petr Kotík. A tireless promoter of European and Americanavant-garde, Kotík studied at the Prague Conservatoire and at HAMU,followed by University in Vienna. In the 1960s he founded the newmusic ensemble Musica Viva Pragensis and QUaX Ensemble. John Cage, the American composer and his ideas were the keyinspiration for Kotík. Since 1969 he has lived in the USA, since 1983in New York. In recent years he has also spent time in Prague andin Ostrava, where he is known as the founder and artistic directorof Ostrava Days, the Festival of New Music.

Miroslav Srnka has been critically acclaimed as one of the mostsuccessful Czech contemporary composers. He studied musicology at FF UK in Prague, and composition at Prague HAMU with MilanSlavický, completing his education at universities in Berlin and in Parisand at various prestigious courses for composers; he is also a winnerof several awards. His output includes chamber, as well as symphonicand opera works and is performed primarily abroad; he collaboratesregularly with world-renowned soloists, orchestras and opera houses. In January 2015 the PKF – Prague Philharmonia orchestra performedthe Czech premiere of his No Night No Land No Sky composition.

MEEtInG tHE MUsEs
PKF – Prague Philharmonia is a pioneer of educational programmesand concerts for children in the Czech Republic. Again we have paidgreat attention to make sure the programmes are compatible withthe young concert goers’ age and ways of communication, so thatthe events captivate even the most fidgety. Because of the greatsuccess of this series in the last season, the creator Vladimír Jopekdecided to again invite the series' ‘guides’ – the elves Šíma and Lupi.They will introduce four Muses to the audience, representing fourthemes. This way we won’t focus only on works by one chosencomposer, but a varied selection of musical pieces, often in surprising contexts, will be heard.
The concerts are aimed primarily at children from 3 to 11 years old.

The Notička Children’s Club was founded nine years ago by PKF – Prague Philharmonia. The primary aim was to offer our youngaudiences of the popular children's concerts an even more intenseand stronger involvement with classical music and art.
Throughout the year, NOTIČKA organises 5-6 meetings. Thesegradually start turning their attention to outside the musical worldand musical education. Children are helped in developing theiraesthetical sensibilities, and they learn many new things.The objective of the Notička club is for the children to experiencesomething special, to try something they don’t usually do overthe week-ends with their parents; they should leave the club witha unique experience, thanks to which they will be able to comprehendmore easily things that are not covered in school education.

The PKF – Prague Philharmonia’s Orchestral Academy wasestablished in 2008, the very first project of its kind in the CzechRepublic. Following the success of its first year, the numberof students grew from five to the current twelve to fourteen. The aimof the project is to seek out talented students at music schools or theirgraduates and offer them the practical experience of orchestralplaying. With us, young gifted musicians can gain the worthwhileexperience of playing with an orchestra and conversely, the orchestracan enlarge its ranks with fully-fledged young talented players.In 2009 some Academy members took part in a unique project –the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, and two of them, Jakub Fišer andOndřej Martinovský, together with another ninety selected musiciansfrom around the world gave a performance conducted by MichaelTilson Thomas in Carnegie Hall in New York. This is further proofof the PKF – Prague Philharmonia Orchestral Academy’s uniquenessand effectiveness for its members.
In 2016 the Orchestral Academy project is financially supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the Air NavigationServices of the Czech Republic. The realisation of the project is supported by ČEZ Foundation.

PKF – Prague Philharmonia enters its 23rd season with an openingconcert led by the new chief conductor Emmanuel Villaume. Yourresponse to our performances is inspiring. In the 2016-17 season we shall give over thirty concerts, not counting the demanding concert tours and performances for other organisers.
In order to be able to bring absolutely the best to our listeners, withoutany compromises, we continually search for ways how to guaranteethe smooth running of the orchestra. As PKF – Prague Philharmoniasprang up years ago from sheer enthusiasm and a longing to makemusic at the highest level, it has no permanent financial backer and is run as a charitable trust, therefore we rely on our own ability to findfunds from public institutions, corporate sponsors and individualbenefactors. For individual donors we offer, as a way of thank you,various benefits relevant to the level of annual donations. OurPhilharmonia Club is an association of PKF supporters and includes our friends from various professions and age groups. What unifies them is their belief in the importance of live art for society.
We would like to offer you the possibility to join us as a PhilharmoniaClub member. The club’s membership enables a closer contact withmusicians, conductors, our partners and other interesting people. tHE PRAGUE CHAMBER PHILHARMonIA FoUnDAtIon
The foundation was set up in 1994 by the conductor Jiří Bělohlávek,composer Petr Eben and pianist Ivan Moravec. From the Foundation’sfunds contributions are made towards the purchase of musicalinstruments, and towards an improvement or enlargement of theorchestra’s inventory, among other. The current level of means allowsonly the purchase of instrument accessories, such as strings andhorsehair for string instruments and ligatures and reeds for windinstruments.
The PKF Foundation is administered by the Board of Directors and theSupervisory Board, the Foundation’s President is Prof. Jiří Bělohlávekand Ing. Ondřej Žižka is the Board of Directors’ Chairman. Like the ClubPhilharmonia, the Foundation supports the working of the orchestraand its individual sections. The benefactors can, under certain terms, by donating to the Foundation, reduce their taxes and at the same timecontribute to the running of our orchestra.
