April 2014 School Calendar for 2014-15 The Central Springs Community School District Board of Education approved the school calendar for the 2014-2015 school year at its regular meeting on Monday, February 10. The calendar is based upon instructional hours versus instructional days. The rules in the past were that school districts must schedule and hold classes for 180 days minimum each school year. Recent legislation changed the rules and which now provides school districts the opportunity to submit a calendar based on no less than 1,080 instructional hours in a school year. The Board’s intention was to build a calendar that provides instructional time consistent with the amount of instructional ti me provided students using the traditional180 day calendar. The approved calendar does that. In determining the amount of instructional time provided students, districts are required to construct the calendar using the building that provides the fewest number of instructional hours in a school year. For Central Springs that would be the High School. In calculating instructional hours districts are allowed to count class time, passing time between classes and parent- teacher conferences. School districts may not count lunch-time as part of the instructional day. Snow Makeup Days in this calendar will be added to the end of the calendar. With the movement to a calendar based on instructional hours versus days the Board of Education has indicated that it is their intention that the calendar be committed to maintain the current number of instructional hours that the district currently provides in the traditional 180 day calendar. Based on that commitment, the district will make up lost days due to inclement weather, tournaments, etc. just as the district has in the past. Typically, late starts or early-outs will be handled as in the past. Makeup Days Change the Last Day of School: Based on the latest snow day (#8), the last day of classes at Central Springs will be Thursday, June 5. Hopefully, we have seen the last of the lost days of school this year! NIC and CBC Agree to Proceeding with Super Conference Beginning 2015-2016 With a goal of creating long term partnership and stability, superintendents from the Corn Bowl Conference and North Iowa Conference met Tuesday morning to discuss the creation of a new super conference made up of 18 school districts from the top of Iowa. The concept has been in discussion mode for a little over a year, but it took less than 2 hours for the superintendents of both conferences to reach consensus that a 2-divison concept with some flexibility for scheduling was the go-ahead plan. Pending approval of the local school boards, the new super conference of 18 schools will take effect the 2015-2016 school year. Although this new union may be referred to as an “athletic conference”, it is the intent of the superintendents to create more opportunities for combined fine arts and student leadership events as well. Districts in the 2015-2016 merger include Belmond-Klemme, Bishop Garrigan, Central Springs, Eagle Grove, Forest City, Garner Hayfield-Ventura, Lake Mills, Newman Catholic, Nashua-Plainfield, North Butler, North Iowa, Northwood-Kensett, North Union, Osage, Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock, St. Ansgar, West Fork, and West Hancock. Changes are already in place for the 8-school NIC beginning fall of 2014 with addition of 3 new partners Bishop Garrigan; Eagle Grove; and North Union. Riceville will no longer remain a member of the current 8-school Corn Bowl Conference, having submitted a request to opt out earlier this year. The athletic directors from each school met in a joint meeting on March 5 to review the 2-division concept, discuss important details of creating the new conference, and begin the scheduling and contracting of games and events. The Super conference concept will allow for some cross-over games within the 18 schools, and several „in‟ or „out‟ of conference options. This was important to the athletic directors not only for scheduling, but also for keeping relationships with schools played in the past. A list of ideas for a possible new name for the conference was generated at the meeting, but it was determined that students from each of the schools should be tapped for their suggestions as well. At some point in the future, a new name will be offered for approval by the 18 superintendents. The next step in the process is for the 18 local school boards to approve a resolution at their March meeting calling for the creation of the merger. Summer Driver’s Ed Classes Registration for the Summer 2014 Driver Education session is now underway! Information sheets about the program may be picked up in the High School office. If Mother Nature cooperates and doesn’t bless us with too many more snow days, this is how the calendar dates will look. Otherwise, there will need to be some slight alterations. Regular classes will be held on Monday and Thursday mornings beginning June 9th and ending July 10th. Class time will run from 7am until 10am ….. early yes, however it frees up the rest of the day for work, sports and other summer activities. Students will also drive one time per week with another student for a 2 hour time slot. The week of July 14th through the 17th will be the students final drive exam. We will also offer two make-up class times that week for those that have missed up to two regular classes. If there are more than two absences, students will be dropped from the program. Cost for the program is $270. Once financial arrangements are made with Mrs. Mellmann, students can sign up for a drive time in the High School office. Mr. Arians will once again be the instructor.
