June 16, 2011 Game 18; Road 8

Pittsfield Colonials (8-9) Vs. New Jersey Jackals (10-9)

Yogi Berra Stadium • Little Falls, NJ • 3,784 capacity

PIT - Miguel Flores - RHP (0-2, 2.91) Vs. NJ - James Leverton - LHP (1-2, 4.50)

THE LAST TIME: Chad Paronto pitched the first complete game shutout of his 16-year professional career in game

one of a doubleheader as the Pittsfield Colonials defeated the New Jersey Jackals 9-0. The Colonials would get Paronto

all the runs that he would need in the first inning as they posted five runs, keyed by a two-run triple from Danny

Bomback and a two-run homer by Billy Mottram, his third of the year. Pittsfield would extend the lead with two runs

each in the fourth and fifth innings. The offense was more than enough for Paronto (1-3) as he tossed his first complete

game since July 9, 2000 allowing six hits, walking none and striking out six. Phil Bartleski (1-1) took the loss. In the

second game, Nick Giarraputo had two hits for the Jackals, leading them to a 4-0 win. Isaac Pavlik (4-0) tossed a

complete game shutout. David Qualben (1-1) also went the distance for the Colonials, taking the loss.

STARTING MATCHUP: Miguel Flores starts the series finale for the Colonials. (More on Flores on page 2.) He will

be opposed by LHP James Leverton for New Jersey. Leverton is 1-2 on the season with a 4.50 ERA in four starts. He has

appeared in one game against the Colonials this season, going six innings allowing three runs on eight hits in a 5-2

Jackals setback. Leverton pitched at three levels in the Cubs system last season going an impressive 10-1 with a 2.75

ERA in 49 games out of the bullpen, saving nine games along the way. Leverton saw the majority of his action between

the Peoria Chiefs (Midwest - A) and the Daytona Cubs (FSL - A+), while getting into four games for the Tennessee

Smokies (Southern - AA). In 68.2 innings, Leverton struck out 57 while holding opponents to a .240 average against.

Going back into the starting rotation is familiar territory for the lefthander as prior to last season, he started 35 of 41

professional outings. Leverton was the Cubs’ 8th round pick in the 2008 draft (251st overall) out of Texas Tech

University.

SWEET 16: 2011 marks Chad Paronto’s 16th professional baseball season. While most of his prior experience had been

as a reliever, one would think that he had accomplished most anything that a player could in a baseball career. Not quite

as Paronto chalked up another first yesterday afternoon in his 647th professional appearance. The right-hander tossed the

first complete game shutout of his career in the 9-0 game one win over the Jackals. He had pitched two complete games

in 91 previous starts, the most recent being a seven-inning CG in game one of a doubleheader against the Altoona Curve

while pitching for the Bowie Bay Sox (Eastern - AA) on July 9, 2000.

WHO’S HOT: Danny Bomback is hitting .342 in his last 10 games with eight runs scored. He has also recoded a hit in

each of the Colonials seven road games this season. The Colonials middle infielder has also reached base safely in 14

consecutive games.

WHO’S NOT: Rafael Cabreja is riding an 0-for-17 skid dating back to May 31 against Rockland.

SCORE EARLY: The Colonials are 6-1 in games this season in which they score the first run of the contest.

WELCOME BACK: Pittsfield has run through a tough stretch early on in the year with injuries, however some of the

injured Colonials are on the mend and hope to be returning to the lineup soon. Matt Nandin was the first of the walking

wounded to return to action as he went 2-for-4 in the doubleheader yesterday after missing 10 games with an oblique

injury. Pittsfield is still waiting to get Tim Stronach and Pat Bresnehan healthy.

LEFT-HANDED COMPLIMENT: The Colonials as a team are hitting just .224 against left-handed pitching this

season with all three of their homers against southpaws coming from right-handed batters (Welch - 2, Knazek - 1).
