Pitting and crevice corrosion are
localized forms of corrosion that
can occur with stainless steels.
Wherever there are acid chloride
solutions, such as sea water,
bleach or oxidizing salts e.g. ferric
chloride and cupric chloride, then
this form of corrosion can occur.
Pitting occurs randomly on wetted

surfaces in the form of small deep
cavities. Crevice corrosion occurs
in narrow crevices where the solu -
tion can penetrate but is not fl ushed
during normal operation as in other,
more open areas. Attempts have
been made to establish a measure
of the pitting and crevice corrosion
resistance by calculating the sum
of the most important alloying ele-
ments in a weighed form. This sum
is called PRE (Pitting Resistance
Equivalent) and one common ex-
pression is shown below. Using this
formula the fi gures in the table have
been calculated.

3A 35.6

5A 43.0

The higher numbers indicate
greater pitting and crevice
corrosion resistance of alloys.

Karhula Foundry
One of the foremost manufacturers of stainless pump castings in the world
The Karhula Foundry is part of Sulzer
Pumps Finland Oy, supplying demand-
ing steel and special cast iron cast-
ings primarily to the company’s own
factories in Finland. Other customers
include Sulzer Pumps’ factories in
USA, Germany and Great Britain.
Sulzer Pumps – Striving to Serve You Better! For over 135 years Sulzer Pumps has
been providing innovative pumping
and mixing solutions for a number of
different industry segments. Today we
are a leading global supplier of pumps
and mixers to these targeted markets.
Through our commitment to under-
standing our customers’ process and
specifi c needs, we have consistently
been at the leading edge of technical
developments in providing pumping
and mixing solutions. We strive to
meet your application requirements
through the use of state-of-the-art
tech nology and advanced research &
development facilities.
In addition we offer the pump indus-
try’s most extensive network of Cus-
tomer Service Centers to support and
service our products.
Of the total annual production of some
50,000 castings, 85 per cent are made
of duplex or superduplex steel grades.
Most of the duplex steel grades con-
form to the American ASTM A890
standard. The net weights of the cast-
ings range from 0.5 kg to 15,000 kg.
Molds at the Karhula Foundry are
made by using a method based on a
resin bonded sand or the Replicast®
CS Ceramic Shell molding method.
The Karhula Foundry applies quality
and environmental systems approved
by Det Norske Veritas.
3) AVESTA 654SMO is a trade mark owned by Outokumpu Stainless which has granted Sulzer Pumps licence to produce this material.
Cast Materials
1) Standard corresponding to the internal code is ASTM.2) The hardness is informative value.
