Game Storylines• Pitt and Penn State meet for the 98th time in a series widely regarded as one of college foot-ball's most historic rivalries. The Panthers have won each of the past two encounters, 42-39 last season and 12-0 in 2000.

• At one time an annual Keystone State clash, the series began in 1893 and has pitted former high school teammates and even fam-ily members against one another. This year's contest marks the second of a four-game agreement that concludes in 2019.

• Pitt will be visiting Beaver Stadium for the irst time in 18 years. The Panthers have lost each of their last four games at Penn State (1990, 1992, 1997, 1999) and are just 6-17 on the road against the Nittany Lions.

• Pitt's last win in State College, a 14-7 decision in 1988, was spurred by the late Curtis Bray, who had a sack for a safety and key interception as a freshman linebacker.

• A victory at Penn State would give the Panthers three consecu-tive wins in the series, something they have not achieved since 1944-46.

• Pat Narduzzi's familiarity with the Nittany Lions predates his time as Pitt's head coach. As Michigan State's defensive coordi-nator from 2007-14, Narduzzi faced Penn State ive times, win-ning three of those contests.

• Narduzzi's last visit to Penn State was the 2014 regular-sea-son inale when Michigan State yielded just 233 yards in a 34-10 victory.

• This will be Pitt's second road game against a Top 10 foe in its last six contests. The Panthers played at No. 2 Clemson last Nov. 12 and handed the eventual national champion its only loss, 43-42. Pitt's victory in Death Valley snapped the country's longest home winning streak at 21 games.

√ In 2013, Michigan State inished No. 3 in the country following a Big Ten title and 24-20 vic-tory over No. 5 Stanford in the Rose Bowl. In the wake of that championship season, Narduzzi was named the 2013 recipient of the prestigious Bro-yles Award, annually presented to the country’s top assistant coach.

√ Narduzzi tutored an impressive list of decorat-ed defensive players at Michigan State, including irst team All-Americans in cornerback Darqueze

Dennard, safety Kurtis Drummond, linebacker Greg Jones and defensive tackle Jerel Worthy. Dennard was a unanimous All-American in 2013, becoming the irst Michigan State cornerback to earn that distinction. He also was the school’s irst winner of the Jim Thorpe Award, given annu-

√ Prior to Michigan State, Narduzzi spent three years (2004-06) as defensive coordinator under Dantonio at Cincinnati, helping the Bearcats to a pair of bowl invitations.

√ Narduzzi served as linebackers coach at Northern Illinois for three seasons (2000-02). NIU won a pair of MAC divisional titles during his tenure and in 2002 had the league’s top rushing defense. From 1993-99, Narduzzi coached at his alma mater, Rhode Island, serving as the Rams’ defensive coordinator his inal two seasons. He began his coaching career at Miami of Ohio, working as a graduate assistant in 1990 and 1991, before earning his irst full-time position as receivers coach for the 1992 season.

HOPING FOR DÉJÀ VU Pitt's trip to Penn State marks its second road game against a Top 10 foe in its last six contests. The Panthers played at No. 2 Clemson last Nov. 12 and handed the eventual national champion its only loss, 43-42. Pitt's victory in Death Valley snapped the country's longest home winning streak at 21 games. It also marked the Panthers' irst win over a ranked opponent since Nov. 9, 2013, when they defeated No. 24/25 Notre Dame, 28-21, at Heinz Field. Pitt lost its next four games against ranked foes before the win at Clemson. Additionally, the Tigers, ranked No. 2 in the coaches poll and No. 3 by Associated Press at the time, were the highest rated opponent Pitt had defeated in nine years. On Dec. 1, 2007, the Panthers visited West Virginia, ranked No. 1 by the coaches and No. 2 by AP. Pitt shocked the Mountaineers, 13-9, knocking them from the national title picture.

PENALTY FREE Pitt did not incur a single penalty in its season-opening victory over Youngstown State. It marked the irst time since a 21-14 win at Louisville on Nov. 12, 2011 that the Panthers went through a game penalty free.

CLOSE SHAVES Under Pat Narduzzi, the Panthers have a winning record in close contests. Narduzzi has directed Pitt to a 9-7 record in games decided by single digits. In contrast, the Panthers were 1-5 in single-digit contests in 2014, the year before Narduzzi's arrival. From 2010-14, Pitt was 8-17 in such games.

HEARTBREAK HOTEL Four of Pitt's ive losses in 2016 were by a combined 18 points, an average margin of 4.5 points per game: Northwestern (31-24, Pinstripe Bowl), Virginia Tech (39-36), North Carolina (37-36) and Oklahoma State (45-38). The 23-point loss at Miami (51-28) was Pitt's largest margin of defeat last season. Two of Pitt's losses came on late scores. In the one-point defeat at UNC, the Tar Heels' winning points came on a two-yard touchdown pass with two seconds to go. At Oklahoma State, the Cowboys scored on a one-yard run with 1:28 remaining to claim a seven-point win.

HEINZ SWEET HEINZPitt inished the 2016 season with a 6-1 record at Heinz Field, matching its best home mark since the stadium opened in 2001. The Panthers also went 6-1 at Heinz in 2009. Including its season-opening victory over Youngstown State, Pitt has won seven of its past eight home games. The Panthers are 10-4 (.714) at home under Pat Narduzzi, 7-4 (.636) in road games and 0-2 at neutral sites.

OFFENSIVE NOTESISN'T IT GRAND?

Pitt returns a 1,000-yard rusher for 2017 in junior Qadree Ollison, who netted 1,121 in 2015 en route to earning ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Ollison will attempt to become just the sixth player in Pitt history to achieve multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons. The last player to accomplish the feat was James Conner, who had 1,092 yards in 2016 and 1,765 yards in 2014. The other Panthers in this elite group are Tony Dorsett (four from 1973-76), Curvin Rich-ards (1988-89), LeSean McCoy (2007-08) and Dion Lewis (2009-10). RUSH HOURPitt compiled 208 rushing yards in its season-opening victory over Youngstown State, the ninth time in the past 13 games the Panthers have reached the 200-yard mark on the ground. Under Pat Narduzzi, Pitt has compiled at least 200 rushing yards 13 times. The Panthers featured one of the most potent rushing attacks in the ACC and nationally in 2016. Pitt averaged 225.1 rushing yards per game to rank third in the ACC and 28th in the nation. It was Pitt's third highest rushing average since 1988. IMPRESSIVE POINTS IMPROVEMENTPitt's 2016 average of 40.9 points per game ranked 10th nationally and second in the ACC. The Panthers' scoring improved 12.7 points per game compared to 2015 (28.2 avg.). The Panthers were the only Power 5 team in the nation to score at least 28 points in every regular-season game last year.

PITT SCORING IN ACC ANNALSThe 2016 Panthers became the irst team in school history to score at least 36 points in seven consecutive games. That streak began with a 42-39 win over Penn State (Sept. 10) and was snapped in a 51-28 loss at Miami (Nov. 5). Pitt became only the fourth team in ACC history to score 36 or more points in seven consecutive games. The others are Florida State in 2013 (13 straight games), Clemson in 2012 (10 games) and Florida State in 1995 (seven games).

PITT SYRACUSE SHOOTOUTPitt closed its 2016 regular season by scoring 11 touchdowns in a 76-61 victory over Syracuse. The point total was the Panthers’ high-est in a game since 1977 when Pitt defeated Temple, 76-0. The Syracuse contest featured an FBS-record 137 combined points, eclipsing the prior mark of 136 set in 2007 (Navy defeated North Texas in regulation, 74-62, and Boise State outlasted Nevada, 69-67, in a four-overtime game). The Pitt record for points in a game is 96 set in a shutout vic-tory over Dickinson in 1914. The Panthers' 76 points is tied for the fourth-highest point total in school history.

O'NEILL FINDS THE END ZONEBrian O'Neill has started 26 consecutive games at tackle for the Panthers. However, the junior's contributions have gone beyond the conventional duties of an offensive lineman. While he was instrumental for Pitt's nationally ranked running game, O'Neill actually carried the ball twice himself last year—scoring touchdowns each time. His initial carry came on a throwback lateral that went for a 24-yard TD in the Panthers' 37-34 win over Geor-gia Tech. O'Neill reached the end zone again on an end-around play against Virginia Tech that resulted in a ive-yard score. He had two carries for 29 yards on the year (14.5 avg.) and even threw two passes (both incomplete). Originally a tight end who moved to tackle during the 2015 offsea-son, O'Neill's unconventional contributions earned him SB Nation's 2016 "Piesman Trophy," the only award in college football that honors offensive and defensive linemen who run, pass or catch the ball. He was an All-ACC selection at tackle by the coaches (second team) and media (third team).

ALL PURPOSE DYNAMOWide receiver Quadree Henderson was one of the nation's most productive all-purpose performers in 2016. Henderson ranked 11th nationally and second in the ACC with an average of 160.23 all-pur-pose yards per game. He compiled 2,083 all-purpose yards for the season, second only to legendary tailback Tony Dorsett in Pitt annals. Dorsett had 2,217 during his 1976 Heisman Trophy campaign. Dorsett and Henderson are the only players in Pitt history to reach 2,000 all-purpose yards in a season. In the 2017 season opener against Youngstown State, Henderson totaled 155 all-purpose yards (77 rushing, 71 on kickoff returns and seven receiving).

JESTER'S NO JOKEIn 2016, his irst year as a starting wide receiver, Jester Weah led the Panthers in catches (36), receiving yards (870) and touchdown recep-tions (10). Weah averaged an astounding 24.2 yards per catch, which ranked second in the country and irst in the ACC. He became just the seventh Pitt player since 1989 with double-digit catches in a season to average more than 20 yards per reception. The Pitt season record for yards per catch is 28.3 set in 1991 by Dietrich Jells (12 catches for 339 yards). Weah's average ranks second to Jells.

WEAH'S BIG NIGHTJester Weah was a catalyst in the Panthers' 43-27 win over Marshall last season by producing the highest receiving yardage by a Pitt player in 12 years. Weah compiled 176 yards on seven catches—both career highs—and made the game's decisive play when he beat a defender for a 54-yard touchdown to put Pitt up by 10 with 1:04 left. His receiv-ing yardage was the most by a Pitt player since Nov. 6, 2004, when Greg Lee had 188 yards (on nine catches) at Syracuse.

HOME RUN HITTERFor his career, Quadree Henderson has six kickoff returns that have gone for more than 80 yards. But perhaps the most memorable return of his brief career was one that didn't result in a touchdown. In the Panthers' stirring 42-39 victory over Penn State last season, Henderson made one of the game's critical plays when he returned a kickoff 84 yards to the Nittany Lions' 10 in the fourth quarter.
