The Panthers and NC State have played nine prior times. The 2017 encounter will be the ϐirst ACC game between the two schools. • The Panthers will anticipate being without starting quar- terback Max Browne, who was injured in last week's Syracuse game. Browne is the ACC's leader in completion percentage (.711) and has thrown for 997 yards with ϐive touchdowns and two interceptions through six games. • Sophomore Ben DiNucci came on in relief of Browne in the third quarter and completed 6-of-10 passes for 55 yards. DiNucci led Pitt to 11 fourth-quarter points but the Panthers' rally fell just shy, 27-24, in the Carrier Dome. • DiNucci has played in ϐive games this year with one start (at Georgia Tech). He has thrown for 442 yards with two TDs and two INTs. • Pitt's rushing attack has received an unlikely spark from junior safety Jordan Whitehead. Pulling double duty in last week's Syracuse contest, Whitehead rushed seven times for 73 yards (10.4 avg.), including a 35-yard touchdown, and also ran for a 2-point conversion. On defense, he collected nine tackles. • Redshirt freshman placekicker Alex Kessman has displayed a powerful leg in his debut season. He has made four consecutive ϐield goals covering 55, 49, 42 and a school record-tying 56 yards. • Only two seniors—cornerback Avonte Maddox and end Allen Edwards—have appeared in the starting lineup for Pitt's youthful defense this season. • Pitt is 7-2 all-time against the ACC's Atlantic Division. The two losses came last week against Syracuse and in Pitt's very ϐirst ACC game, a 41-13 setback to eventual national champion Florida State in 2013. √ Pat Narduzzi has directed Pitt to eight regu-lar-season wins in each of his irst two years, something the Panthers had not achieved since 2008-09.

√ In his irst two seasons, Narduzzi fashioned a 16-10 overall mark (11-5 in the ACC). The last Pitt coach to achieve as many victories in his irst two years was the late Sera ino "Foge" Fazio,

who went 17-6-1 over his initial two seasons in 1982-83.

√ In ACC annals, Narduzzi became only the ifth man to begin his head coaching career with at least eight wins in each of his irst two seasons. The others are Charley Pell of Clemson (1977-78), Ralph Friedgen of Maryland (2001-02), Jeff Jagodzinski of Boston College (2007-08) and Jimbo Fisher of Florida State (2010-11).

√ In 2016, Pitt was the only school to have wins over two teams that inished in the top 5 of the inal College Football Playoff rankings. The Pan-

thers gave No. 2 Clemson—the eventual national champion—its only loss (43-42) and kept No. 5 Penn State out of the playoff ield by defeating the Nittany Lions, 42-39.

√ In 2016, Quadree Henderson earned consensus All-America status as a return specialist after leading the country in kickoff return touchdowns (three) and combined kick return yards (1,166). Additionally, guard Dorian Johnson, now of the Arizona Cardinals, was a irst team All-American. √ In his debut campaign at Pitt in 2015, Narduzzi led the Panthers to an 8-4 regular-season record, their best 12-game mark since 2009, and a Mili-tary Bowl invitation. Pitt inished as the runner-up in the ACC Coastal Division with a 6-2 mark, its best conference record ever.

√ Pitt boasted the ACC’s top offensive and defen-sive newcomers in 2015. Safety Jordan Whitehead was named the league’s Overall and Defensive Rookie of the Year. Tailback Qadree Ollison was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year following a 1,000-yard rushing campaign.

√ Narduzzi arrived at Pitt following eight highly successful years as the defensive coordinator at Michigan State under Mark Dantonio. The Spar-tans were the only team to rank in the nation’s top 10 in total defense and rushing defense each season from 2011-14.

√ Michigan State boasted the nation’s top rush-ing defense in 2014, yielding just 88.5 yards per game. The Spartans inished third nationally with 34 turnovers gained and eighth in total defense, holding opponents to just 315.8 yards per con-test.

√ In 2014, the Spartans inished with a No. 5 national ranking and 11-2 record following a stir-ring 42-41 victory over Baylor in the AT&T Cotton Bowl. Narduzzi’s defense shut out the high-scoring Bears in the fourth quarter, opening the

door for 21 unanswered points by Michigan State in one of the most thrilling games of the 2014-15 bowl season.

√ In 2013, Michigan State inished No. 3 in the country following a Big Ten title and 24-20 vic-tory over No. 5 Stanford in the Rose Bowl. In the wake of that championship season, Narduzzi was named the 2013 recipient of the prestigious Bro-yles Award, annually presented to the country’s top assistant coach.

√ Narduzzi tutored an impressive list of decorat-ed defensive players at Michigan State, including irst team All-Americans in cornerback Darqueze

Dennard, safety Kurtis Drummond, linebacker Greg Jones and defensive tackle Jerel Worthy. Dennard was a unanimous All-American in 2013, becoming the irst Michigan State cornerback to earn that distinction. He also was the school’s irst winner of the Jim Thorpe Award, given annu-

ally to college football’s top defensive back.

√ Dennard was a irst-round NFL Draft pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2014, the irst Spartans defensive back taken in the initial round since 1961. In the 2015 draft, another Narduzzi pupil, Michigan State cornerback Trae Waynes, was a irst-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings.

√ Prior to Michigan State, Narduzzi spent three years (2004-06) as defensive coordinator under Dantonio at Cincinnati, helping the Bearcats to a pair of bowl invitations.

√ In 2003, Narduzzi was the defensive coor-dinator at Miami of Ohio under the late Terry Hoeppner. The RedHawks stormed to a 13-1 record that season, capturing the Mid-American Conference championship and defeating nation-ally ranked Louisville in the GMAC Bowl to inish No. 10 in the Associated Press poll.

√ Narduzzi served as linebackers coach at Northern Illinois for three seasons (2000-02). NIU won a pair of MAC divisional titles during his tenure and in 2002 had the league’s top rushing defense. From 1993-99, Narduzzi coached at his alma mater, Rhode Island, serving as the Rams’ defensive coordinator his inal two seasons. He began his coaching career at Miami of Ohio, working as a graduate assistant in 1990 and 1991, before earning his irst full-time position as receivers coach for the 1992 season.

√ Narduzzi was a starting linebacker under his father, the late Bill Narduzzi, as a freshman at Youngstown State University in 1985 before transferring to Rhode Island, where he became a three-year starter for the Rams from 1987-89.

√ Bill Narduzzi was head coach at YSU from 1975-85. He led the Penguins to two NCAA Divi-sion II playoff appearances, including the national championship game in 1979, and twice was named the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year.

TEAM NOTESPITT PENALTY PROFICIENCY

Pitt is doing an exceptional job at limiting penalties this season. The Panthers lead the ACC in fewest penalties per game (3.83), rank second in fewest total penalties (23) and are third in fewest penalty yards (221) and fewest penalty yards per game (36.83). Pitt also boasts lofty national rankings in these categories as well. Pitt is ifth among all FBS schools in fewest penalties per game, 11th in fewest penalties and fewest penalty yards per game, and 19th in fewest penalty yards.

LAUNDRY FREE GAME The Panthers did not incur a single penalty in its season-opening victory over Youngstown State. It marked the irst time since a 21-14 win at Louisville on Nov. 12, 2011 that the Panthers went through a game penalty free.

RANK AND FILEPitt's 2017 schedule features ive teams ranked in this week's Top 25 polls: Penn State (rated No. 3 by both the Associated Press and coaches), Miami (No. 11/10), Oklahoma State (No. 14/14), Virginia Tech (No. 15/17) and NC State (No. 20/20).

TRUE FROSH HIT THE FIELD Six true freshmen have played for Pitt this season: long snapper Cal Adomitis, running back A.J. Davis, cornerback Damarri Mathis, quarterback Kenny Pickett, cornerback Jason Pinnock and tight end Tyler Sear.

MORE FRESH FACES A further illustration of Pitt's youth is the number of redshirt fresh-men who have played this season. A total of 15 redshirt frosh have made their collegiate debuts for the Panthers in 2017. Five of those players (center Jimmy Morrissey, cornerback Therran Coleman, safety Bricen Garner and defensive linemen Keyshon Camp and Rashad Weaver) have started.

YOUR 2017 PITT TEAM CAPTAINSAs selected by their teammates, the captains for the 2017 Panthers are senior quarterback Max Browne, junior safety Dennis Briggs, senior cornerback Avonte Maddox and senior wide receiver Jester Weah. Browne, a graduate transfer from USC, owns the distinction of also being elected a captain last season for the Trojans.

HEINZ SWEET HEINZPitt has won eight of its past 10 home games. The Panthers are 2-1 at Heinz Field this year. Pitt inished the 2016 season with a 6-1 record at Heinz, matching its best home mark since the stadium opened in 2001. The Panthers also went 6-1 at Heinz in 2009. Pitt is in the midst of its best home stretch since going 9-1 at Heinz over the 2008-09 seasons.

CLOSE SHAVES Under Pat Narduzzi, the Panthers have a winning record in close contests. Narduzzi has directed Pitt to a 9-8 record in games decided by single digits. In contrast, the Panthers were 1-5 in single-digit contests in 2014, the year before Narduzzi's arrival. From 2010-14, Pitt was 8-17 in such games.

128 YEARS AND COUNTINGThe 2017 campaign marks the 128th football season in Pitt history. The Panthers, who played their inaugural season in 1890, have a 714-524-42 all-time record (.574). The program’s rich legacy in-cludes 92 irst team All-Americans, 24 College Football Hall of Fam-ers, eight Pro Football Hall of Famers and nine national titles.

OFFENSIVE NOTESSUDDENLY THE ELDER STATESMAN

Sophomore Ben DiNucci is suddenly the most experienced active quarterback on Pitt's roster. Senior starter Max Browne will be out after sustaining an injury at Syracuse last week. DiNucci has played in six career games, including ive this season. He made the irst start of his career at Georgia Tech on Sept. 23. DiNucci inished 12-of-19 passing for 110 yards and a touchdown against the Yellow Jackets. He opened the game by directing Pitt on a 78-yard touchdown drive, capped by his 28-yard scoring strike to Qadree Ollison. On the season, DiNucci is 36 of 65 (55.4%) for 442 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. He has also rushed for a touch-down and thrown a 2-point conversion pass (both at Penn State).

Pitt returns a 1,000-yard rusher for 2017 in junior Qadree Ollison, who netted 1,121 in 2015 en route to earning ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Ollison will attempt to become just the sixth player in Pitt history to achieve multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons. The last player to accomplish the feat was James Conner, who had 1,092 yards in 2016 and 1,765 yards in 2014. The other Panthers in this elite group are Tony Dorsett (four from 1973-76), Curvin Rich-ards (1988-89), LeSean McCoy (2007-08) and Dion Lewis (2009-10). Through six games this year, Ollison has a team-high 249 yards on 63 carries.

O'NEILL FINDS THE END ZONEBrian O'Neill has started 31 consecutive games at tackle for the Panthers. However, the junior's contributions have gone beyond the conventional duties of an offensive lineman. While he was instrumental for Pitt's nationally ranked running game in 2016, O'Neill actually carried the ball twice himself last year—scor-ing touchdowns each time. His initial carry came on a throwback lateral that went for a 24-yard TD in the Panthers' 37-34 win over Georgia Tech. O'Neill reached the end zone again on an end-around play against Virginia Tech that resulted in a ive-yard score. He had two carries for 29 yards on the year (14.5 avg.) and even threw two passes (both incomplete). Originally a tight end who moved to tackle during the 2015 offsea-son, O'Neill's unconventional contributions earned him SB Nation's 2016 "Piesman Trophy," the only award in college football that honors offensive and defensive linemen who run, pass or catch the ball. He was an All-ACC selection at tackle by the coaches (second team) and media (third team).

ALL PURPOSE DYNAMOWide receiver Quadree Henderson was one of the nation's most productive all-purpose performers in 2016. Henderson ranked 11th nationally and second in the ACC with an average of 160.23 all-pur-pose yards per game. He compiled 2,083 all-purpose yards for the season, second only to legendary tailback Tony Dorsett in Pitt annals. Dorsett had 2,217 during his 1976 Heisman Trophy campaign. Dorsett and Henderson are the only players in Pitt history to reach 2,000 all-purpose yards in a season. In 2017, Henderson has totaled 680 all-purpose yards.

PITT PUNT RETURN TDS Since the 2000 season, Pitt has only nine punt return touchdowns, in-cluding two by Quadree Henderson (an 80-yarder at Georgia Tech this season and 65-yarder vs. Duke in 2016). Henderson is the irst Pitt player to have multiple punt return touchdowns since Darrelle Revis accomplished the feat over the 2005-06 seasons.

UNPRECEDENTED IMPACT ON RETURNS Since the 2000 season, Pitt has just 11 kickoff returns for touch-downs and Quadree Henderson is responsible for four of them. No other Pitt player during that span has more than one. In the Panthers' 2015 Military Bowl game against Navy, Henderson took the opening kickoff 100 yards for a score—Pitt's irst 100-yard kickoff return since 1990 (Ricky Turner vs. West Virginia). Hen-derson had his second 100-yard return at Miami during the 2016 season.

PITT GAME NOTES & ANECDOTES

HOME RUN HITTERFor his career, Quadree Henderson has six kickoff returns that have gone for more than 80 yards. But perhaps the most memorable return of his career was one that didn't result in a touchdown. In the Panthers' stirring 42-39 victory over Penn State in 2016, Henderson made one of the game's critical plays when he returned a kickoff 84 yards to the Nittany Lions' 10 in the fourth quarter. Three plays later James Conner scored on a shovel pass to put Pitt up 42-31, providing the winning cushion.

The Panthers chalked up their irst block of the 2017 season in the opener against Youngstown State when defensive end James Folston Jr. got his hands on a Penguins punt. In addition to Folston, ive current players —including George Aston, Avonte Maddox, Chawntez Moss and Quintin Wirginis—have blocks as Panthers.

2017 GAME-BY-GAME REVIEW

Pitt built a 21-0 intermission lead but needed overtime to fend off Youngstown State, 28-21, in the season opener for both teams…Jester Weah’s leaping 11-yard touchdown grab on the opening possession of OT provided the winning points…on YSU’s subsequent possession, redshirt freshman safety Bricen Garner ended the game by picking off Hunter Wells in the end zone…the victory marked the Panthers’ irst in overtime since a 36-33 win at Notre Dame in 2008…Pitt had

dropped three consecutive OT contests before beating YSU…Qadree Ollison rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns, while Quadree Henderson ran for 77…Pitt compiled 208 yards on the ground but was outgained in total offense, 418 to 348…in his Pitt debut, Max Browne completed 17-of-24 passes for 140 yards and the winning strike to Weah…the Panthers incurred zero penalties in the game, the irst time they achieved that feat in six years (2011 at Louisville)...

Pitt moved to 3-0 in season-opening games under Pat Narduzzi…the Panthers improved to 15-1 all-time against FCS foes.

2017 GAME-BY-GAME REVIEW

Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph threw for 497 yards and ive touchdowns as the No. 9/8 Cowboys (3-0) cruised past host Pitt,

59-21…the 38-point defeat marked the Panthers’ worst loss ever at Heinz Field…Rudolph completed 72% of his passes (23 of 32) but did throw his irst interception of the season, ending his FBS-best active streak of 216 attempts without a pick…Avonte Maddox was respon-sible for the INT at the goal line in the third quarter…the Cowboys rolled up 676 yards, a Pitt opponent record (eclipsing Virginia Tech’s 675 in 1993)…for the second consecutive game, Pitt quarterback Ben DiNucci came off the bench and directed the Panthers to their initial touchdown…DiNucci led two second-quarter scoring drives and in-ished the game 13 of 25 for 228 yards with a TD and two INTs…his attempts, completions and yardage marked career bests…Pitt fell to 1-2 with both losses coming to teams ranked in the Top 10...it was the irst time since 2006 that Pitt had faced consecutive Top-10 opponents.
