The pitch

Holograms are brilliant. The idea that a subject can appear to be there even when its not is revolutionary.

But you already knew that. However, not everyone else does. They don’t understand what a hologram is, what it does, how it works, how a hologram is made, where does holography come from and most importantly what can it be used for today?

Having studied holography myself and worked at View Holographics Ltd (VHL) I have had a small insight into theprocess, the possibilities, the limitations and the problems of holographic production. I came away with minimal knowledge of the whole company and the process. This is through no fault of VHL. Holography isn’t easy to explain nor is it easy to understand. This brings us to communication.

There are more ways than one to communicate with a client or a potential investor, and some are moreappropriate and more e!ective than others. I aim to create a PRODUCT which VHL can use to helpcommunicate more e"ciently with their clients. The product will have a RANGE of applications andformats that VHL can easily work with and reach their clients and others through various methodsof DISTRIBUTION.

Product

A re#ned and refreshed set of printed collateral that is designed speci#cally to communicate the processesand purposes of holography.

Range

A short run branded publication on the basics of holography, focussing on the questions to which clients will most likely want to know the answer.

Informative handouts that are clear and concise which tell clients about the uses of the holograms VHL create.

A series of informative posters that can be displayed around the labs and o"ce space so clients and visitors can take an interest and learn more about holography during their visits.

Distribution

- Business meetings and conferences- Exhibitions- Email- Mailouts- Client visits- B2B meetings- Web (site out of date/ need to relfect what VHL does more)

Questions

Like any other company, a client needs to know what they are buying into and what they can expect from the company or brand. In VHL’s case the client needs to know more about the process and what exactly VHL can o!er so that they have a greater knowledge of the process and what kind of holography VHL practice. Also, they can have a better understanding of the services andproducts VHL can provide. This knowledge comes from asking questions. Questions thatcan be obvious and apparent, questions that people who already know the answers to might notthink necessary to ask.

Background/ history/ technology - what is holography? - where did it come from? - what is a hologram? - what’s the di!erence between digital and analogue holography? - how does a hologram work? - what is parallax? - what is the di!erence between single/double parallax? - what is the process of creating a hologram?

Application/ display purposes/ uses - what can a hologram be used for? (application) - what can you make a hologram of? - what can VHL make a hologram of? - what are digital and analogue holograms best used for?

By answering these questions in the most simple and informative of ways, VHL will be able to generate an e"cient and higher quality of dialogue with its clientbase that can speed upmeetings, save confusion and most importantly avoid disappointment in clients if they feel their expectations have not been met.

Answers

Answering these proposed questions is rather straight forward. You can give a direct answer and type it out. But that wouldn’tbe very engaging would it?

The following proposals of how I will answer the questions are going to form the basis of the content for the publicationand the informative handouts.

- what is holography?

A technique which enables three dimensional images to be made.

- where did it come from?

*UHHN+RORVְѤѨѪZKROHJUDIHќѩњѮيZULWLQJGUDZLQJKĿӤOlJUƎIď

- what is a hologram?

A recording.

- what’s the di!erence between digital and analogue holography? - how does a hologram work?

It works much like a mirror. Light hits the hologram from a speci#c source point illuminatingthe image so we can see it. The light must come from a speci#c direction.

- what is parallax? - whats is the di!erence between single/double/full parallax? - what can a hologram be used for?

Holograms can be used in many ways such as logos, point of purchase signs, shop front displays, museum features and other exhibitions.

- what can you make a hologram of?

Holograms can be made of many things but their are limitations to the size of holograms and the size of the subjectmatter. For instance a hologram of a toy Ferrari would be much easier to produce than a full sized car.

- what can VHL make a hologram of? - what are digital and analogue holograms best used for?

- what is the process of creating a hologram?

Design #nishes and options.

Colour scheme

Inspired by the RGB lasers used to create the holograms themselves, Ipropose to use a CMYK red, green and blue colour scheme that will beconsistent across the design work.

The colours won’t be used for the copy as it will make the text di"cult toread, which would defeat the purpose of the deliverables which is to makeholography easier to understand.

The colour scheme will also be a part of the stock choices. I’ll be testingdi!erent layouts and applications of the stock to create a really visuallyengaging set of designs that will keep the audience’s attention to help themfocus on this di"cult subject.

Print !nishes and format

The format and scale of the publication and handouts ought to remain faithful to the corporate standard, however, I think it would be interesting to experiment with alternative paper sizes to give the company an edge and come across as real innovators in creativity and communication.

Foil blocking is a great print #nish when used properly and e!ectively. It can really make a design stand out. I’ve already been experimenting with Holographic foil to re$ect the obvious message of the company. As I can’t use a real hologram on the front of every copy of the publication, this is the next suitable option.

Bespoke type concept

Holograms are formed by three lasers red, green and blue (RGB)with this method of construction I’ve applied it to the type designfor the publication.

The skeletal structure of the type is designed to make the typeappear 3D but at the same time remain 2D like a hologram would.

The three di!erent squares represent the three #lls that are used toform the typeface. The black represents the Red laser, thestriped represents the Green laser and the blank represents the Blue laser. The densities in the #lls are relative to the densities of the light colour in the spectrum.
