8/4/2019 pirates of the caribbean thing
1/1
Whats in the frame? Whats not?
The frame shows Captain Barbossa,
inside of a ship.
Whats in focus? Out of focus?
Captain Barbossas face is the item in
focus, to help show the audience his
emotions.
The skeleton hand and the rest of the
ship is out of focus as it is not fully
necessary for the rest of the shot.
Background/foreground?
Barbossa is in the foreground of the shot,
making him the one you focus on
In the background is the rest of the ship
which appears to old, which fits in with the
time period of the f ilm. The ship also appears
to not be very well kept and is presumably
stolen. This helps show that the pirate in the
foreground is not good.
Focus
The type of focus in this frame is a
sharp focus to accentuate the face.
It is also used in this
way to make the shot
seem realistic,somebody would
continue to look at the
face of a person over
other features.
Angle of the shot
The angle of the shot appears to be general
straight on, however it is slightly at an angle
below the character in focus to show his
power and authority. The use of this angle
makes the audience feel bellow and lesser to
him, making them fearful of him.
Highlights/Shadows
There are many shadows within this scene
which are caused by both artificial and
natural light. It adds realism to the scene..Interior/props
The interior in the scene is very old
fashioned and fits the time period in which
the film is set, therefore the ship is typically
wooden and the clothing such as the hat isvery tired looking, this helps show the type of
character we are dealing with.
Clothes/hairstyle
The clothing of Barbossa is very typical of a
pirate, by being worn down and tired looking.
This adds to the scene as pirates are
typically not trustworthy and you would
normally not trust somebody who looks how
pirates typically look. The matted, dirty badly
kept style of his hair also adds to overall
pirate effect.
Day/Night and natural/artificial lighting
Judging by the lighting of the scene it
appears to be dark outside, suggesting it is
night. This would therefore make any light in
the inside of the shot artificial in the form of a
candle or oil lamp. However this shot a lot
uses natural light being shone onto the hand
of Barbossa, this is shown in the extreme
different colours between the face which is
artificially lit to the hand is which naturally lit.
Facial expression/posture
Barbossas facial expressions
seem to show regret and panic,
an unusual expression for a
pirate. His posture is leaning
forward as if to reach out
towards someone as if about to
move towards them.
Looks (off screen/at camera/each other)
In this frame Barbossa is looking just off
directly at the camera and looking at a
character within the scene. It is a reaction
shot, used to show an immediate reaction to
someone or an event.
Point of view
(window/participant)
The point of view of this shot in a
window view, meaning someone
outside of the scene/world where
the character is. We are seeing
the scene as the audience not as
the character.
Symmertical/uneven?
This frame is symmetrical in composition andis even.
Proximity- How close or how far?
Barbossa is in within a close proximity of the
other character in the scene but is at the
same time is far away from them, shown in
the outstretched hand reaching towards
them.
Central or off centre
The frame is just off centre to the
left of the screen at an angle this
adds to the effect that we are the
audience and this is a window
shot, not a participant shot.
