IoT and wireless sensor networks are becoming vital infrastructures today. Outdoor base stations need to be 24/7 reliable but also super power efficient. In the past, base stations used commercial motherboards with desktop processors for higher CPU performance and integrators took a high risk on their thermal and longevity support. Advantech AIMB-231 industrial motherboard is designed with wide temperature support of -20~70 °C which can work under semi-outdoor environments. AIMB-231 is designed with Intel 5th core I processor, Intel i210 LAN, and USB 3.0 onboard which allows end customers to have high performance and connectivity with lower power.

Smart VTM (Virtual/Video Teller Machines) bring innovative benefits. By providing a real time, face-to-face conversation with bank service specialists, it can cover 95% of traditional counter services and prolong service hours to reduce labor and banking costs. To provide these additional services, this customer needed a highly reliable hardware design with multiple USB and serial ports, and additional expansion slots to connect with several external devices. Advantech AIMB-503YH has up to 16 USB ports and 10 Serial ports, so customers can connect directly with multiple external devices like cash dispensers, receipt printers, scanners etc. It also supports dual independent displays and 3 PCIe slots for high expansibility. Moreover, the enhanced USB power switch design helps customers control USB power on/off and their application independently via GPIO for maximum reliability.

Features of this SPS include vacant parking space detection, displays of available parking space w/ direction indication, and payment systems. SPS detects car park space occupancy via ultrasonic sensors sat above each parking space. Drivers looks at the LED display board (located at the main gate entrance) which shows type and number of parking spaces available. After driving into the car park, drivers look at the internal information LED display to show availability and direction. The parking fee payment system needed to be accurate with different types of payment choices like cash, credit cards, special travel cards etc. EPC-B2203 offers flexible I/O connection for payment, vacant parking spaces, and direct information displays and two GbE ports connect in real time to receive available parking space data in order to assist drivers to find parking spaces quickly.

Intelligent gateways play a critical role in IoT by collecting sensor data at the network edge, filtering and normalizing the data for sharing in the cloud. To facilitate IoT deployment, Advantech developed the first gateway family-- UTX-3115/3117 offer multiple RF module connectivity & wide-temp embedded box computer coupled with the Intel® software and pre-configue Cloud service WISE-PaaS, a Linux and Windows operating system, security and management features.

Smart Street Lighting SystemThousands of street lights illuminate the city helping drivers and pedestrians find their way home safely. But huge amounts of electrical power are consumed doing this, so reducing consumption saves money and of course, helps the environment.

Multiple additional devices can be deployed in the smart street lighting system such as environmental quality sensors like PM2.5 fine particle sensors, anemometers, and rain gauges. UTX-3117 serves as the core for RF and wireless data collected from the sensors in the wide area network. UTX-3117 supports various protocols including UTX-3117 supports various protocols including 6LowPAN, Zigbee, WiFi, BLE, LoRa, NB-IOT, and analyses useful data before sending it to the Cloud via 3G/LTE, WiFi, Ethernet. UTX-3117 uses an optimized thermal design that can sustain full load operation in -20~60 °C critical environments.

UTX-3117 is designed with an Intel® Atom E3900 processor which provides a 30% CPU performance enhancement and 45% graphic performance boost. It also includes HEVC and VP9 HW video coding/encoding functions. UTX-3117 was installed with an IP camera used to monitor city traffic flows and can advise drivers to avoid certain traffic hot spots. Furthermore, it can detect local parking zones and share available parking information with drivers. The IP cameras were also used for community surveillance and public safety, and their recorded video data could even assist in crime investigations.

Requirements

A smart street lighting solution is the best way to meet these requirements. The city government decided to implement a solution with solar radiation sensors, environmental air quality sensors, and industrial computers in a smart street lighting system that automatically adjusted brightness when sensing daylight changing and vehicles or people approaching. To complete the system, a powerful IoT gateway computer is also needed to collect and control all data from these sensors.

Software Integration

Advantech’s WISE-PaaS pre-configured cloud service software creates a path for data flow from sensors to the cloud, and it pushes sensor firmware updates from Cloud. WISE-PaaS also provides gateway health status monitoring and remote on/off switching from control rooms or mobile devices.

Conclusion

Via Advantech’s UTX-3117 IoT Gateway with WISE-PaaS, the city street lighting system was quickly deployed for power saving, environmental data monitoring, and video surveillance to make the city smarter and safer.
