The numbers alone are stag-gering. Each year in the U.S., 8million pets end up in shelters, and of these, only half nd newhomes. Approximately 11,000pets a day, or 4 million each year, are euthanized, even though

most of them are adoptable.Despite these overwhelmingstatistics, ending pet homeless-ness is an achievable goal andeveryone can be part of the solu-tion. People Saving Pets, a newsocial movement created byPetSmart Charities, is dedicat-ed to saving homeless pets andsuggests ve simple actions thatanyone can taketoday tosave lives.

    Adopt

If you have the time and re-sources to care for a pet, chooseto adopt instead of buying yourpet from a breeder or pet store.Have your heart set on a par-ticular breed? Nearly 25 percentof animals living in shelters arepurebreds, and many rescuegroups are dedicated to specicbreeds.

    SpAy And neuter

If youre already planningto adopt or currently own a pet, have your pet spayed/neutered.Its one of the best ways to re-duce overcrowding in sheltersand lower euthanasia rates, yet35 percent of the cats and dogsliving in U.S. households have

not had this simple and safeprocedure. Cats and dogs canbe spayed/neutered as early as8 weeks old, and studies haveshown that the procedure can

provide signicant health bene-ts and reduce behavioral prob-lems.

Furthermore, price doesnthave to keep you from doing

the right thing for your pet.Certain clinics will provide you with spay/neuter services at areduced cost sometimes evenfor free. To nd one nearby,

check out the People SavinPets clinic locator tool at wwwpeoplesavingpets.org.

    Volunteer

Cant welcome a new peinto your family just yet? Volun-teer at your local shelter! Froproviding playtime for pets tohelping out at adoption events

or becoming a foster pet parentyour time will make a huge dif-ference in saving pets.

    donAte

Shelters rely heavily on do-nations. A small gift can golong way. If you cant donatmoney, household items sucas cleaning products, garbagbags and old blankets and tow-els are also welcome.

    ShAre

Perhaps the easiest wato help save homeless pets isto spread the word. Let youfriends, family and co-workersknow that youre passionatabout helping animals and hothey can be part of the solutionUse social media like Facebooand Twitter to share informa-tion and opportunities to helpets with your networks.

At www.peoplesavingpetorg, you can nd tools and re-sources to help save pets livessuch as an adoptable pet loca-tor and a low-cost spay/neuteclinic locator, and nd opportu-nities to volunteer and donate tolocal animal welfare organiza-tions.

You Eat What You AreIt is fairly easy to understand that our body becomes what we eat. But to understand that we eat what we are we have

to look at how we select food.

In ancient days, many times there was not much choice. We ate when food was available and there were frequentlyperiods of starvation. Today, most of us have an abundance of choices. If we had no outside influences we would choose

food that we needed. Some parents are horrified because their child eats dirt. Really that child is deficient in minerals andis trying to get them by eating the sand. Studies have shown that children will select healthy foods until they are taughtto select foods by taste.

Parental modeling and television advertising are the two big influences on how children select food. Children learn bywatching their parents. Remember that saying? What you do speaks so loudly, I cannot hear what you say!! So if a childsees coffee, pop, sweets, alcohol, prepackaged food, etc. all the time that is what they will learn to eat. I see children inmy office that would rather have an apple than a piece of candy. Why? Parental influence!! These children are modelingthe healthy choices of their parents.

I also know children whose favorite place to eat is McDonalds. Now, we know it is not because of the exquisite cuisine. They want a Happy Meal. Why? Highly successful advertising!! The Fast Food industry is very good at marketing to children. They know that if the kids nag enough, the parents will take them to McDonalds (or what ever burger joint is offering thebest prize that week).

The bottom line is: we select food based on our thoughts. I often see a thin person in a cafeteria saying, I can eatanything I want and never gain a pound. Then there is the person who says, This dessert will make we gain 10 pounds. Both are right. What we say and how we think about food has a huge impact on our systems. I oftenhave heard patients who are struggling with their weight say things like, I sometimes find myselfeating without even realizing I am doing it and I am not even hungry. These are examples of howour automatic thoughts have an impact on our body, our weight, and on our over-all health.

So, if our automatic thoughts influence our food selection, we need to look at where we are.If everything is good, there is no need to change. But, if we have allergies, are over weight, have

joint problems, experience asthma, fight diabetes, maybe we need to change our thinking. Learnto eat consciously and decide purposefully what to eat and how much to eat. Stop just eatingautomatically. Things like hypnosis can help change our automatic thought process, but thinkingand choosing with awareness and purpose is really a better approach. It puts us in control and givesus a sense of mastery over our selves. The more control we can have over these simple things thebetter outcomes we can have in our whole lives.
