Reimagining classic tales is one of the two central ways that Children’s Theatre Company has been instrumental in

introducing new productions to the world, alongside the commissioning of wholly original plays like this season’s Buccaneers. We are the

nation’s leader in producing new work for young people, with over 200 new scripts produced in

our 47 year history. Every one of those plays was made possible through donations from our supporters – people

just like you! For that we thank you and ask you to consider supporting us in our mission to secure the future of theatre for generations to come.

When we examine classic stories, as we do with students across Twin Cities schools in our acclaimed Neighborhood Bridges critical literacy program, we ask students to look at a variety of ways the tale could be told and how that tale would be different from each character’s perspective. We look for the ‘personal’ story inside the tale.

Pinocchio has been reimagined in many ways. Carlo Collodi would, I think, have been surprised to see how far his iconic 1883 children’s novel took his independent puppet. My own first memory with the story, like so many of my generation, occurred as a child watching the Disney movie. My mother reminds me (frequently) that the whale swallowing Geppetto was so scary to me that I needed to leave the theatre. Later that day I begged to go back to see the movie again. I had to see what had happened; I needed to know what fate befell the characters…and mom wouldn’t tell me.

The lesson that the world can be scary but it’s still worth exploring is particularly resonant to me as a parent. Live theatre is so good at allowing our audience to explore the world and its darker side safely but with an immediate impact. That theme repeats in every show this season from Buccaneers to Jackie and Me to Alice’s adventures in Wonderland – we follow characters filled with curiosity as they investigate times and places far more dangerous than they appear at first glance

This weaving together of themes both complex and earnestly simple is what draws me to work in theatre for young people. The stories on our stage may entertain but they also speak to bigger ideas and, with luck, serve to educate and inform our future leaders.

Collodi was especially fond of allegory in his writings. In Pinocchio, Collodi’s use of a puppet who seeks independence as a way to illustrate “growing up” is not only a lovely image, it also reflects the independence and reunification movements that Collodi was involved with in Tuscany. Like so many great children’s tales, this story works on multiple levels and has beautifully big ideas about maturity, courage and self-reliance.

In this version of the story, director and adaptor Greg Banks uses the very setting of the theatre we are in to set his stage. Tools, ladders and drop cloths take on a life of their own and transform into the setting (and even some of the characters) as though the Blue Fairy had imbued them with life. We are whisked away to join an adventure that will ultimately lead to the very dark stomach of a very big whale. How will that journey occur this time, you may well ask?

BIOGRAPHIES

PETER C. BROSIUS (Artistic Director) joined Children’s Theatre Company in 1997. At CTC, Peter has directed the world premieres of Buccaneers, Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy, Mercy Watson to the Rescue!, Babe, The Sheep-Pig, The Biggest Little House in the Forest, The Iron Ring, Bert & Ernie, Goodnight!, Iqbal, Madeline and the Gypsies, Average Family, The Lost Boys of Sudan, Anon(ymous), Reeling, The Monkey King, Hansel & Gretel, The Snow Queen and Mississippi Panorama, all commissioned and workshopped in CTC’s new play development lab. He has also directed numerous regional premieres such as Dragonwings, A Village Fable and Boundless Grace. Previously, he was the Artistic Director of The Honolulu Theatre for Youth and Artistic Director of the Improvisational Theatre Project of the Mark Taper Forum. In addition, Peter has directed at theatres across the country including South Coast Repertory, Arizona Theatre Company, South Street Theatre on Theatre Row, and Off Broadway for Pan Asian Repertory. Peter is the recipient of numerous awards including TCG’s Alan Schneider Director Award and honors from the L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award and Dramalogue. He holds a B.A. from Hampshire College and an M.F.A from New York University. Peter is married to playwright Rosanna Staffa and is the father of Daria and Gabriel.

TIM JENNINGS (Managing Director) works in partnership with Peter C. Brosius to manage the marketing, resource development, educational and administrative functions of the theatre and its subsidiaries and supports Peter’s profound artistic vision. Prior to joining CTC, Tim served as Managing Director at Seattle Children’s Theatre from 2008-12, Roseneath Theatre in Toronto from 2000-08 and has taught Theatre Management at two Toronto based Universities. His history includes management at such notable companies as the Canadian Stage Company, The Canadian Opera Company and Ainsworth at SkyDome. Tim has produced work garnering 15 Dora Award Nominations (Toronto’s ‘Tony’) including seven wins, three of which were for Outstanding Production. Under his joint leadership with David S. Craig, Roseneath also won two Canada Council prizes, two Chalmers Awards for new play development and had a play nominated for the National Literary Prize of Germany (in translation). He has presented artists from every inhabited continent, toured productions to more than a dozen countries and more than 40 states. In 2007, Tim was shortlisted for Canada’s Arts Manager of the Year. Alongside his appointment to board of the Theatre Communications Group, Tim has served on boards of the Washington State Arts Alliance, International Performing for Young People, a medieval history society, the Boys and Girls Club of King/Kitsap counties (Washington) and the cultural database collective in Seattle, Wash. Tim is married to Truly Carmichael and together they raise their son, Zachary. “Minnesota is so lucky to be the home to the world’s fl agship children’s theatre and we, at CTC, are so lucky to have the Twin Cities to support us and ensure that CTC continues to exist and fl ourish! CREATIVEGREG BANKS (Adapter and Director) has been working as an actor, writer and director since 1979. His work has taken him from Singapore to Seattle via Moscow, New York and the Arctic Circle. Whilst building a reputation for making and touring new work in small scale venues throughout the United Kingdom in the 80’s, his work has also been seen in the West End and at the New Victory on Broadway. He has recently become Artistic Director of Fair Game Theatre in the UK touring new work to rural audiences and working with disadvantaged young people in the community. Previous productions for CTC include his adaptations of Antigone, Huck Finn, Romeo and Juliet, and Robin Hood. He also directed Sleeping Beauty and A Wrinkle in Time. Greg is very happy to be back with his adaptation of Pinocchio.

JOSEPH STANLEY (Scenic Designer) has designed sets for Children’s Theatre Company including Pippi Longstocking (2012, 2006 & 2001), A Wrinkle in Time (2011), Robin Hood (2010), Dr. Seuss’ The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins (Adaptation - 2010), Mulan, Jr. (Ivey Award honoree for Set Design-2010), Romeo & Juliet (2009), The Magic Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle (2008 & 2004), Huck Finn (2007), and Antigone (2006 & 2003). Joe’s designs were seen Off-Broadway in the Mixed Blood/59E59 production of Pure Confi dence (2009). His work has been featured by many theatre, music, and dance companies including Pillsbury House Theatre, Mixed Blood Theatre, Stages Theatre, Mu Performing Arts, Frank Theatre, Theater Latté Da, the Minnesota Orchestra, Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theatre, Steppingstone Theatre, 15 HEAD, Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, Sandbox Theatre, Dancing People Company, James Sewell Ballet, American Southwest Theatre, and the Creede Repertory Theatre. Joe was a founder and Artistic Director of 15 HEAD—a theatre lab from 1995-2004.

MARY ANNA CULLIGAN (Costume Designer) is a Twin Cities’ theatre artist whose design work has appeared in many Children’s Theatre Company productions including Buccaneers, A Wrinkle in Time, Robin Hood, Romeo & Juliet, Pippi Longstocking, Peter Pan, The Magic Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, Antigone and The Iron Ring. Mary has costumed numerous Twin Cities theatre productions including the recent productions of Heaven with Joe Chvala’s Flying Foot Forum, Oliver Twist at Park Square Theatre and As You Like It with Ten Thousand Things Theatre.

REBECCA FULLER JENSEN (Lighting Designer) is in her 13th season at CTC, where her design credits include Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat, Pippi Longstocking, A Wrinkle in Time, Babe, The Sheep-Pig, Robin Hood, Disney’s Mulan, Jr., The Iron Ring, Romeo & Juliet, The Magic Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Dr. Seuss’ The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, Antigone and Prom. She has also designed lights for numerous theatres and performers in the Twin Cities, including Walker Art Center

and The Southern Theater. Rebecca received her M.F.A. in Design and Technical Theatre from the University of Minnesota. In her spare time, she enjoys sailing, gardening, and spending time with her husband, Maury, and their dog Maddie. She is currently the Lighting, Sound and Video Director at Children’s Theatre Company.

VICTOR ZUPANC (Composer/Sound Designer and Musician) grew up in Canada and started studying music at age six. He earned his Master’s Degree in Music Composition at University of California—San Diego. Victor has worked on more than 250 productions as Composer, Musical Director and Sound Designer throughout the country. His music has been heard in China, Japan, South America, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. He won two Hollywood Dramalogue Awards, two Theatre Critics Circle Awards and is a three-time McKnight Fellow and a 2005 Bush Foundation Artist Fellow. Victor recently composed the new theme for Minnesota Public Radio’s program Krista Tippett on Being, which is broadcast weekly on 240 stations nationwide. This is Victor’s 23rd season as Music Director at CTC. His CTC composing credits include dozens of scores including Cinderella, The Hobbit, The Monkey King, Korczak’s Children, A Very Old Many with Enormous Wings, The BFG (Big Friendly Giant), Bud, not Buddy, Iqbal, and Ramona Quimby. He particularly enjoyed conducting a Chinese orchestra in Shanghai, China, performing Dr. Seuss’ The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins in Chinese. Victor lives in Minneapolis with his wife, Dianne, and daughters, Luisa and Lydia.

ELISSA ADAMS (Dramaturg) is CTC's Director of New Play Development. Since 1998, she has overseen the commissioning and development of more than 35 new plays that have premiered on CTC’s UnitedHealth Group and Cargill stages. Previously, she served as Director of Playwright Services at The Playwrights’ Center and Literary Manager at La Jolla Playhouse. She is a frequent guest Dramaturg at the Sundance Theatre Lab and has served on numerous panels for TCG. Elissa teaches a course in the theatrical process at Minneapolis College of Art and Design, serves on the board of Open Eye Figure Theatre and TYA/USA and was a 2007 recipient of a McKnight Foundation Theatre Artist Fellowship. She holds an M.F.A. in Dramaturgy from University of California – San Diego and is, most proudly, the mother of Will and Joanna Sylvain.

CHRIS SCHWEIGER (Stage Manager) fi nds that being a part of new work is one of her favorite things about working at CTC! Chris’ other CTC credits include Buccaneers, The Wizard of Oz, Pippi Longstocking, Annie, Babe, The Sheep-Pig, Robin Hood, Cinderella, The Iron Ring, Dr. Suess’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Dr. Seuss’ The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, Iqbal, Peter Pan, Madeline and the Gypsies, A Year with Frog and Toad, Esperanza Rising, Disney’s Aladdin, Jr., The Hobbit, and Snapshot Silhouette. Chris also worked with Ragamala Dance for their opening of Sacred Earth last fall at the new Cowles Dance Center

for The Performing Arts. She also works with Mixed Blood Theatre, the Guthrie Theater, Theater Latté Da and at Illusion Theater. Chris has worked at the New Victory Theater in New York, the Alpine Theatre Project in Whitefi sh, Montana, and with the Utah Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City, Utah. She received her B.S. in Theatre from Northwestern University’s School of Speech and was a Peace Corps Volunteer for three years in Mongolia.

ALYSSA STAFNE (Assistant Stage Manager) is so happy to be back at Children’s Theatre Company for her second season! Last season she was a stage management intern for Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy and Pippi Longstocking. She had so much fun that she decided to stay for Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat and Pinocchio! Past shows include Lovers & Executioners and 44 Plays for 44 Presidents (Theatre Pro Rata), Smokey Joe’s Café and RENT (Nutmeg Summer Theatre), Too Much Memory, Hair, Little Things, and Pentecost (Connecticut Repertory Theatre). Alyssa graduated with a B.A. in Theatre Studies from the University of Connecticut.

AMY RUMMENIE (Assistant Director) is a founding member and Artistic Director of Walking Shadow Theatre Company. She has directed sixteen productions for Walking Shadow, including Eurydice, An Ideal Husband, reasons to be pretty, Saboteur, after the quake, William Shakespeare’s Land of the Dead, The American Pilot, Fat Pig, and 1926 Pleasant. Amy has worked for Children’s Theatre Company (36 shows backstage), Theatre de la Jeune Lune, The Playwrights’ Center, Shakespeare in the Park, and Open Eye Figure Theatre. Amy holds a Bachelor of Arts from Minnesota State University Mankato, is an alumna of the Lincoln Center Theatre Director’s Lab, and has served as a literary intern for the Guthrie Theater.

NICHOLAS TRANBY (Assistant Sound Designer) is in his 3rd season at CTC. He joined CTC after consulting on technical systems for new cruise ships, including Disney Cruise Line’s Dream and Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas. Prior to that, he was Head Audio for the NETworks Presentations national tours of The Wizard of Oz and The Wedding Singer. He has degrees in Architectural Acoustics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Sound Design & Production from the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati. Some favorite productions he has been involved in include: The Last Five Years and Love, Janis (Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park); The Wild Party (C.C.M.) and a revised revival of Two by Two directed by Martin Charnin (Cumberland County Playhouse). Nik lives in Saint Paul with his wife, Zdanna.

SARAH GEIS (Stage Management Intern) hails from Canton, Ohio. She is currently a junior of the Stage Management program at The Theatre School at DePaul University. Her past credits include: A Wrinkle in Time, Venus, and The Interview, as well as assisting on I am Bradley Manning, Hedda Gabler, Cabaret, and Pinkalicious.

CASTDEAN HOLT (Actor) is a member of CTC’s Resident Acting Company and has spent the past 19 seasons collaborating with amazing artists and friends in more than 60 CTC productions. Highlights in this time include exploring the silent-movie world of Buster Keaton in Reeling (for which Dean won an Ivey Award); If You Give a Mouse a Cookie (where he and his best friend and fellow company member, Reed Sigmund, tore up the stage quite literally); and Cinderella (as the most beautiful step-sister, Pearl Cramp). Romeo & Juliet, Huck Finn, Mississippi Panorama, and Once Upon a Forest are also favorites among his many wonderful experiences at CTC. He is a graduate of St. John’s University and, when not on stage, enjoys spending time with his two fabulous boys and amazing wife, CTC Stage Manager, Stacy McIntosh. Dean would like to thank all of you for helping to make CTC such a special place for the artists and audiences alike.

BRADLEY GREENWALD (Actor) played in Buccaneers, A Christmas Story, Dr. Seuss’ The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, Bert & Ernie, Goodnight!, A Year with Frog and Toad, Aladdin, Jr., The Wizard of Oz, and The Snow Queen on the CTC Stage. He has performed opera, theater,

music-theater, concert and recital repertoire with several Twin Cities’ arts organizations, including Theatre de la Jeune Lune, Guthrie Theater, Jungle Theater, Ten Thousand Things Theater, Nautilus Music-Theater, Minnesota Dance Theatre, VocalEssence, Frank Theater, Minnesota Orchestra, Lyra Baroque Orchestra, A Prairie Home Companion, Skylark Opera and Ballet of the Dolls. Bradley is the recipient of a Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowship in music, the McKnight Fellowship for Theater Artists, and a 2006 Ivey Award.

MAGGIE CHESTOVICH (Actor) is thrilled to return to the CTC stage — she was last seen here playing Lilly in Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse in 2004! Maggie has also performed locally with the Guthrie Theater (The Falls, The Home Place, The Government Inspector, When We Are Married), Ten Thousand Things (As You Like It, Life’s a Dream, Twelfth Night, Blood Wedding, Carousel), Theatre de la Jeune Lune (The Miser, Tartuffe), The Jungle Theater (Molly’s Delicious, How the Other Half Loves, Two for the Seesaw, Rabbit Hole, Holocaust Witness: The Legacy of Anne Frank), Park Square Theatre (The Last Seder), Workhaus Collective (Little Eyes, 800 Words…), Old Log (Unnecessary Farce), Frank (Perfect Pie), Eye of the Storm (The Shape of Things), as well as in projects with Hidden Theatre, The History Theatre, Illusion Theater, The Playwrights’ Center, MN Fringe Festival, Pillsbury House,

and Thirst Theater. Regionally, Maggie has appeared at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and Alley Theatre (Houston, TX).

ELISE LANGER (Actor) is so happy to be back at CTC where she was last seen as Sally in Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat, Nelly in A Special Trade and Wendy in Peter Pan. Originally from Paris, France, Elise has lived and performed in San Francisco, San Diego, New York, Paris, Boise and is now happily based in Minneapolis. Locally, she has performed with: Ten Thousand Things; Open Eye Figure Theatre; Four Humors Theater; Theatre de la Jeune Lune; MN Orchestra; Bedlam Theatre; The History Theatre; Jon Ferguson Theatre and TigerLion Arts. She co-created and performed in Milly & Tillie at Open Eye Figure Theatre. Elise studied at the Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris.

ADAM QUALLS (Understudy: Holt & Greenwald) has appeared at CTC in Buccaneers and Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Introduced to the Twin Cities community in 2010, he has appeared locally with Park Square Theatre, Theatre Pro Rata, Actors Theater of Minnesota, Urban Samurai Productions, and Bloomington Civic Theatre, among others. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from Millikin University in 2008, he performed in regional tours with CLIMB Theatre and Prairie Fire

DOT MCDONALD (Understudy: Chestovich & Langer) is a recent graduate from Howard University receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts and a minor in Sociology. She has been seen in Howard University's productions of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, Rent and Anna in the Tropics. At Children’s Theatre Company, she has appeared in Buccaneers and Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas. She would like to thank God, her mother and her supporting friends.
