No, the above is not a typographical error. The letters are deliberately switched around to create a spoonerism in honour of Reverend William Archibald Spooner, born on July 22, 1844.

You may have heard of a slip of the lip. Reverend Spooner became famous for a slip of the tongue. During a church service one day, he asked the congregation to sing the hymn, “Kinquering Kongs Their Titles Take”. What he meant to say was, “Conquering Kings Their Titles Take”. Credit must go to the congregation who raised their voices in song while stifling smiles at the slip up.

With that tongue tangle, Reverend Spooner, distinguished scholar, tutor, dean and Warden of New College at England’s Oxford University became known as the man who invented spoonerisms. The “oord” was “wout” so to speak and the fun began. Oxford students grabbed their pens to see what inside out, back-to-front phrases they could dream up. Reverend Spooner was a good sport, for he not only chuckled at some of the contributions of his students, he came up with a few more of his own.

Not all his spoonerisms were intentional, though. In spite of his laudable accomplishments in the faculty of education, Revered Spooner was a nervous speaker. At times, this caused him to accidentally transpose

the first letter or syllable of words. His speech problem may have been exacerbated by the fact that he had trouble reading. Revered Spooner was an albino and suffered from very poor eyesight.

When Reverend Spooner died in 1930, the New York Times honoured him with a full column obituary, including examples of some of the tongue tanglers that are attributed to him. During Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, Reverend Spooner apparently called for "three cheers for our queer old dean." One of his students claimed that he scolded him for "fighting liars in the quadrangle," and an entire class was chastised for "hissing my mystery lectures." After a wedding ceremony, Reverend Spooner advised the groom that "It is now kistomary to cuss the bride."

Spoonerisms are by no means passé. Comedy writer Archie Campbell used them in the skits he wrote for the once-popular TV series Hee Haw. Comedian Andrew Dice Clay has fun with them when he takes on the character of a witless Brooklyn greaser. In the Muppet version of The Frog Prince, Jim Henson put the princess under a spell that forced her to speak in spoonerisms and in children’s author Shel Silverstein’s book, Runny Babbit, all the stories contain spoonerisms. There is an electronic musician named Com Truise and an alternative musician named Wevie Stunder.

July 22, National Spoonerism Day, is a time to honour Reverend Spooner and his famous lapses of speech. See if you can figure out these:

A blushing crow Those girls are sin twisters. Is the bean dizzy?

Pine Meadows Garage Sale - another great success!

We enjoyed fantastic weather for our annual event. It was a HUGE success again this year, with many eager buyers and lookers jamming our streets.

We had about 51 families participating, slightly down from the previous years, but we have had a lot of resale changes in Pine Meadows this past year.

A Special Thank You to Bob Arial, Joan Ryan and Mike Orr for posting our many signs around our community. Thanks also to Elaine Boyes who collected the registration fee.

Everyone was in a great mood with the welcomed warm weather. I think everyone enjoyed the day and made a few $$.

Kathy Munro - 176 Lace Bark Lane

Editor's note: ...and a special thanks to you, Kathy, for making it happen!

President’s Message… Jim Taylor

Assuming this is published on July 1, as you read it I am winging away to Las Vegas, and I apologize I will not be at the Canada Day celebrations. I do have a good reason. As many of you know already, the chorus I sing with are Ontario champions this year, and we are representing Ontario at the Barbershop Harmony Society International Chorus Contest on July 4. Can’t tell you what a thrill it is – the adrenaline will be like bungee jumping. I just hope my heart holds out!! Have a wonderful Canada Day. Try to get out to our celebrations, meet your neighbours and have some fun.

Now that summer is in full swing, did you remember to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms? Do you have a regular schedule to change these batteries? Many people change them when we change to and from Daylight Saving Time. And were you aware that it is now law that you must have carbon monoxide alarms? Any fire department can assist you if you need help.

The AGM is getting closer, and now is the time to renew your subscription to the Homeowners Association so you can vote at the AGM. Non members are entitled to attend, but they cannot vote. If you have any motions you wish to bring before the meeting we need to have them to the Board by July 16, please. We also need any suggested changes to the Bylaws, Constitution or Rights & Responsibilities by that date too.

Great thanks go to Barry Wyant and his helpers for organizing the Activities Fair on June 18. The vast majority of our activity coordinators were there, ready to tell you all about their activity and the fun they have. SUCH A PITY IT WAS SUCH A COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME! I think two people who are not regular Koffee Klatch attendees showed up. As the outgoing President, I sincerely do not want to leave under a cloud, but I cannot help but say - with declining attendance at several activities, if this is an indication of the level of interest in the things available here, don’t be surprised if the number of them begins to decline. There is nothing more soul destroying than seeing your efforts to do something for your fellow residents be totally ignored. The same thing can be said of the Association board. We have few, if any, volunteers, and without replacements the board may not even reach the minimum 5 members – and that means the Association folds up.

Our community will only be as good as the efforts of the people who live here, and we simply cannot keep expecting the same people to continue to do everything for us. If you would like to see other types of activity, tell us about it & volunteer to start one. If you have already served, consider re-upping: if you are new – new blood usually brings new enthusiasm, and one does not have to wait until one knows everybody before acting.

Sorry – blunt lecture over – but I’m afraid the future here concerns me and I would like to think I had at least raised the alarm bell.

From the Chef’s Kitchen…. Lynda Young

LEMONADE!!! Come on - you know that you thought of summer as soon as you read that. If anything can conjure up thoughts of hot days, barbecues, and summertime fun, its lemonade.

The history of lemonade is fuzzy. I would expect that wherever there were lemons, water, and some sort of sweetener, lemonade was made. The lemon is native to Asia and Chris Columbus gets the credit for bringing the seeds to North America. In fact, some people believe that Queen Isabella served Columbus some lemonade when he was visiting to find out if she would give him money for the voyage.

When buying lemons for making lemonade (or for any cooking for that matter) look for lemons with a smooth skin and no blemishes. They should feel heavy for their size and if they feel hard, avoid them. A rock hard lemon will have thick skin and not much juice. If you keep

lemons in your refrigerator, they should keep for several weeks and, at room temperature, for about a week.

To get the most juice from your lemons, always juice the fruit at room temperature. You can roll the lemons on the counter or microwave them for 10 to 20 seconds to extract even more juice. If your lemons are cold,

microwaving is best because it will also bring the lemons to room temperature. You will need 4 to 6 medium lemons to equal approximately 1 cup of juice.

I came across this recipe many years ago and have been using it ever since. If you find lemons at a good price you can make this and keep it in the freezer for months. I use this lemonade to make the Minty Lemon Martini on page 7 in the Pine Meadows Community Cookbook. Use 1½ ounces of lemonade concentrate and 1½ ounces of water.

Lemonade Concentrate (makes 5 cups concentrate, which will yield about 10 servings)

2 cups granulated sugar 4 cups water

2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 12 lemons)

In a 2-quart saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for about 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool completely.

Pour the sugar syrup into a 1-½ quart container and stir in the lemon juice. Refrigerate, covered, until cold. It will keep for about 2 weeks in the refrigerator or for several months, in a tightly covered plastic container, in the freezer.

To serve by the glass or the pitcher, combine equal parts lemonade concentrate and water, sparkling water, or club soda.

We Did It!!! Linda Austin

274 km Bike Trip in Prince Edward Island

On Wednesday May 25, bundled in toques, gloves and several layers of clothes, we began the first day of our bicycle trip from Tignish to Elmira on the Confederation Trail in Prince Edward Island. Lisa and Linda were on their own bikes while Michael and Madison were riding together on the tandem. The trail is an old railway track abandoned in 1989. It is regularly groomed with the surface being finely crushed gravel and 274 km in length. The brochures indicate that it is “nearly flat” with gentle gradient – no more than 2% grade. I’m not totally convinced about that fact!!

Our eight days of biking included ranges of distance from 11 km to 55 km each day. Our average speed was 14.6 km/h with the maximum being 26.2 km/h. The scenery along the trail included rolling hills, lush farmland with very red soil, marsh areas and lakes and rivers. The ever present dandelion (which Michael nicknamed the Canadian flower) was accompanied by forget-me-nots, marsh marigolds and many varieties of ferns. Along the trail we observed more than 20 red fox including their young and more than 20 blue heron. Other wildlife included bald eagles, smaller birds including goldfinch, chipmunks and frogs' eggs and tadpoles. What a beautiful place PEI is and we were so fortunate to see

everything from an untouched perspective along the trail.

Each day we found that the weather got a little warmer. In our saddle bags we were able to carry emergency equipment but did not need to use any of it - not even our rain

gear. Our accommodation ranged from a rustic pub to several very luxurious bed and breakfast inns. We certainly appreciated the nice dinners and comfy beds at night. The challenge of having a motorized vehicle when we needed it had been carefully planned by Lisa and we only needed to rent a car for 2 days and have a pick up one day. PEI is a small island and it was not difficult to drive vehicles to where we needed them and then

return to the start of our bike ride for the day.

As we crossed back over the Confederation Bridge on June 7, we were sorry to leave but reflected on how fortunate we were to have enjoyed family time together and that WE DID IT!!!

Maintenance Cost Review Committee (MCRC) Dianne Smith, Chair

The Maintenance Cost Report for May seemed quite excessive at first but further study comparing the May costs against previous months and years showed that we were in fact in line with the costs. The one exception was a $7,600 charge for spring cleaning and tree damage from the winter.

We are currently in a shortfall on our maintenance costs of just over $200.00. You can read the report which is posted on the bulletin in the boardroom.

The roads have finally been swept and the spring cleaning of the lawns is completed as well. Hydro One has read the meter in the Recreation Centre after having made an error in not billing for a number of months. The missed billing payments will be spread out over a year and will be added to the current month’s charges each month. Hydro One will not charge interest or late payment charges on the missed billings.

Everything is on track for the installation of the generators and if all goes according to plan the work will be completed in the next two to three months.

The Pine Line Team

The Pine Line is the monthly newsletter of the Pine Meadows residents and is produced for the Pine Meadows Homeowners’ Association by the Pine Line Team, which currently consists of Barbara and Paul DeRoo, Gary Helmer, Mary-Anne Hill,

Barbara Hodgson, Sheila and Colin Johnson, Paul Lingen (Coordinator), Ian Marr and Jean Pearson.

The Pine Line depends on submissions by the various activity groups within Pine Meadows and by you, the residents. Submissions should be made electronically (by email) to [email protected] or can be placed in the Pine Line box in the main lobby of the Recreation Centre. The submission deadline is the 21st of the month.

While a high priority is to include all submissions, space may require that some submissions be omitted, or delayed to a future edition of The Pine Line.

A guideline for submitted articles is that they be limited to one typed page or 500 words.
