Born and raised in Adelaide, he completed his university education through to Honours level studying with Stefan Ammer and Lucinda Collins. Michael has had much success in local and national Australian competitions including winning the David Galliver Award, the Geoffrey Parsons Award, the MBS Young Performers Award and was a major prize winner in the Australian National Piano Award. In 2009, he made his professional debut with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in the presence of the Premier of South Australia and the Polish Ambassador. In 2007, he received the prestigious Elder Overseas Scholarship from the University of Adelaide. This enabled him to move to London and study at the Royal College of Music (RCM) with Professor Andrew Ball. He was selected as an RCM Rising Star and was awarded the Hopkinson Silver medal in the RCM’s Chappell Competition. From 2010-12, he was on the staff as a Junior Fellow in Piano Accompaniment. In the Royal Over-Seas League Annual Music Competition, he won the Keyboard Final and the Accompanist Prize – the only pianist in the competition’s distinguished history to have received both awards. In the International Haverhill Sinfonia Soloists Competition, he took second place plus many specialist awards. Michael has performed extensively throughout London and the UK and twice at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Much sought after as an associate artist for national and international guests, Michael is currently a staff pianist at the Elder Conservatorium. Michael Ierace Piano

Pinchas Zukerman is equally renowned as a violinist, violist, conductor, pedagogue and chamber musician. His 2016-2017 season, his eighth as Principal Guest Conductor of London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and his first as Artist-in-Association with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, includes over 100 concerts worldwide. In January 2017, he serves as Artistic Director of the New Jersey Symphony’s Winter Festival. Guest conducting and soloist engagements include the Cleveland Orchestra and Boston, Pittsburgh and Montreal Symphonies, plus overseas appearances with the Berlin and Israel Philharmonics, Camerata Salzburg, Korean Chamber Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and Miyazaki Festival Orchestra.

Pinchas Zukerman is devoted to the next generation of musicians, and has introduced innovative teaching programs in London and Israel. He chairs the Pinchas Zukerman Performance Program at the Manhattan School of Music, where he has pioneered the use of

distance-learning technology in the arts. As Music Director of Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra (1999-2015), he established the NAC Institute for Orchestra Studies and the Summer Music Institute encompassing the Young Artists, Conductors and Composers Programs.

Born in Tel Aviv in 1948, Pinchas Zukerman arrived in America in 1962 where he studied at the Juilliard School with Ivan Galamian. His discography contains over 100 titles, and has earned him two Grammy awards and 21 nominations. His complete recordings for Deutsche Grammophon and Philips were released in July 2016, in a 22-disc set spanning Baroque, Classical and Romantic concertos and chamber music. Other recent releases include Brahms’s Double Concerto with the National Arts Centre Orchestra and Amanda Forsyth, recorded live at Ottawa’s Southam Hall.

This masterclass runs for approximately three hours and includes a 20-minute interval.

Josephine Chung ViolinBorn in Sydney, Josephine Chung is a 17 year old Year 12 student at Pymble Ladies’ College. She currently studies under Dr Robin Wilson in the Rising Stars program at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where she regular gives solo and chamber music performances and is the recipient of the Victor Cromack and Melba Alma Harris Cromack Memorial Scholarship. Josephine began violin lessons (Suzuki method) at age 3 and made her orchestral debut with the Guangxi Provincial Symphony Orchestra in China at age 11. She has studied with Yasuki Nakamura and Professor Peter Zhang, and has performed in masterclasses with Ilya Konovolov and Olivier Charlier. Josephine was awarded the 2016 Dorcas McClean Travelling Scholarship following her recital and performance of the Sibelius Concerto with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra under conductor, Brett Kelly. She received the Overall Prize at the 2015 Ku-Ring-Gai Philharmonic Orchestra Secondary Schools Concerto Competition, a prize-winner in the Open Instrumental Section at the Australian Concerto and Vocal Competition in 2015 and the winner of the 2013 National Youth Concerto Competition. In 2014 Josephine was a semi-finalist in the Junior Section of the Menuhin International Violin Competition, held in the USA. Also in 2014, Josephine was a finalist in the Kendall National Violin Competition and was awarded the Richard Pollett Memorial Sonata Prize. She has given regular recital broadcasts on the FineMusic 102.5 Young Virtuosi program in 2013, 2014 and 2015. An enthusiastic orchestral musician, Josephine was selected as Concertmaster for both seasons of the Australian International Symphony Orchestra Institute in 2015, under conductors Johannes Fritszch and David Danzmayr. Josephine has also been a member of several youth orchestras including the Australian Youth Orchestra, and she has also performed as a guest violinist with the Australian National Academy of Music Orchestra.

Jade Paterson is an 18 year old student studying a Bachelor of Music in classical performance (advanced) under Elizabeth Layton. Starting her violin studies at the age of 5, Jade began with Natalie Bergan, and at 8 years she was accepted as a member of the Young Academy of Music in Melbourne, an arm of the Australian National Academy (Directed by Alice Waten), learning from Professor Evgeny Sorkins. On moving to Adelaide at 13, she was taught by Associate Professor Keith Crellin OAM at the Elder Conservatorium and was a single studies scholarship holder. In 2013, Jade received her AMusA in violin and her Grade 8 in piano the following year. Jade has won significant awards such as the Male Metropolitan Choir Scholarship, the Music Teachers’ Association of SA/Grace Barbara Turner Award for Excellence in Performance, the Norwood Symphony Orchestra Prize, the Jane Peters Medallion for violin at the Adelaide Eisteddfod, the Junior Concerto Competition (2013) and was a finalist in the Open Concerto Competition. For the past two years, Jade has been a finalist in the Young Virtuosi Young Performer of the Year competition. Jade has participated in the Recitals Australia Programs, each year has been a finalist, winning the season in 2015. This year, Jade was granted the Eugene Alderman Scholarship, The Gladys Lloyd Thomas Prize, as well as the Florence Cook Violin prize through the Conservatorium. Jade has been Concertmaster of the Adelaide Youth Orchestra and first violin in the AdYO Quartet. For the past two years, Jade was accepted into the Australian Youth Orchestra Programs, including the National Music Camp, Young Symphonists (as associate concertmaster) and the Australian Youth Orchestra. Jade has been accepted into the Australian Youth Orchestra for 2017 for their National Music Camp and February Season.

Anna Freer is a Bachelor of Music student at the Elder Conservatorium, currently completing her second year under the tutelage of Elizabeth Layton. She has performed in masterclasses with artists such as Roger Benedict, Tasmin Little and Michael Barenboim. Recent highlights include performing the Bach Double Violin Concerto with Elizabeth Layton and the Elder Conservatorium Chamber Orchestra, leading the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra as concertmaster, and being selected as one of the finalists of Recitals Australia’s Lunch Hour Series. In 2016 she was awarded the Eugene Alderman Scholarship for Violin. Anna is also a member of various choirs around Australia, singing regularly with the Adelaide Chamber Singers and Gondwana Chorale. In 2017 she will undertake a tour to the USA with Gondwana Chorale, as well as playing with the Australian Youth Orchestra in their February and July seasons.

Jasmine Baric ViolinJasmine is currently in Year 10 and is a student of Dr Robin Wilson at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music’s Rising Stars Program. Jasmine has been successful in the Sydney Eisteddfod and has been a finalist three times in the NSW Secondary Schools Concerto Competition winning the Barbara Cran and the KPO Player’s Choice awards.

In 2014 Jasmine won the Ray Allen Concerto Competition, and later performed the Barber Violin Concerto with the Central Coast Symphony Orchestra. This year she was a semi-finalist in the Kendall National Violin Competition. Jasmine enjoys orchestra and chamber music and has participated in the ACO Academy and Sounds Thinking Chamber Music Summer School. Recently she was invited by the Australian National Academy of Music to perform with the orchestra under Spanish conductor Antonio Mendez. Next year Jasmine will join the Australian Youth Orchestra.
