WELCOME TO SCHIPHOL AIRPORT - This briefing is intended to guide you through the basic rules and proce-dures at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. This airport is rather complex, which can make it quite complicated for pilots to navigate. We hope that this briefing will provide a decent overview of the procedures and allow you, the pilot, to enjoy flying in and out. We hope to see you soon! Have fun!

Altitudes below 3000 feet will always be given in feet. The transition layer is the layer between the transition altitude (3000 feet) and the transition level (variable). It is not permitted to cruise at an altitude in the transition layer. When climbing, standard pressure (1013.25 hPa, also known as QNE) is set on the altimeter when passing 3000 feet. On descent, the local altimeter setting is set passing the transition level. Above the transition layer (determined by the controller based on atmospheric pressure at the airport -- the QNH), altitudes are given as flight levels. One flight level is 100 feet, so flight level 60 (written FL60) is 6000 feet as displayed by an altimeter set to standard pressure.

Your flightplan must begin with one of the exit points in the picture. Depending on runways in use, your SID may be named according to one of the names in grey below the exit points.
During night hours (2230 - 0630LT) some SIDs are different to day time SIDs. Due to noise reduction overhead crowded cities the following SIDs are changed between the given time:
# Flights moving westbound requires an even flight level. # Flights to the east requires an odd flight level.# Flights to all London airports can file maximum FL240.# Flights to (north)eastern countries cannot use FL250.# Flights to the south requires an odd flightlevel due to the north-south regulation in France.# Flights to all Paris airports can file maximum FL290.
