1 What Tetracycline tablets are andwhat they are used or
Tetracyclinebelongstoagroupofmedicinescalledtetracycline
antibiotics.Itisalsoknownasabroad-spectrumantibioticandmaybeusedtotreatawiderangeofinfectionscausedbybacteria,theseinclude:
respiratorytractinfectionssuchaspneumonia,bronchitisorwhoopingcough
urinarytractinfections
sexuallytransmitteddiseasessuchaschlamydia,gonorrhoeaorsyphilis
skininfectionssuchasacne infectionsoftheeyesuchasconjunctivitis
rickettsialinfectionssuchasQfeverortickfever
otherinfectionsincludingbrucellosis,psittacosis,plague,cholera
tetracyclinemayalsobeusedtotreatleptospirosis,gas-gangreneandtetanus.

takeTetracyclinetabletsandtellyourdoctorifyou: areallergic
(hypersensitive)totetracycline,othersimilarantibiotics(suchasminocyclineordoxycycline)oranyotheringredientinthetablet(seesection6)
havehadkidneyorliverproblemsforalongtimeorseverekidneydisease
havesystemiclupuserythematosus(SLE),aconditioncharacterisedbyarash(especiallyontheface),hairloss,fever,malaiseandjointpain
aregivingittoachildunder 12yearsold.
Take special carewithTetracyclinetabletsandtellyourdoctorifyou:
suerfrommyasthenia
gravis,aconditioncharacterisedbymuscleweakness,dicultychewingandswallowingandslurredspeech
havekidneyorliverdisease aresensitivetosunlight.
Taking other medicines
Pleasetellyourdoctororpharmacistifyouaretakingorhave
recentlytakenanyothermedicines,includingmedicinesobtainedwithoutaprescription.Especially:
penicillinssuchasphenoxymethylpenicillin(totreatinfections)
vitamin A
retinoidssuchasacitretin,isotretinoinandtretinoin(totreatacne)
oral
contraceptives(thepill).Tetracyclinetabletsmaymaketheoralcontraceptivepilllesseective.Youshoulduseadditionalcontraceptiveprecautionswhilsttakingtetracyclineandfor7daysafterstopping
anticoagulants(tostopthebloodclotting)
diuretics(watertabletssuchasfurosemide)
kaolin-pectinandbismuthsubsalicylate(totreatdiarrhoea)
medicinestotreat
diabetessuchasinsulin,glibenclamideorgliclazide
medicineswhichcandamage your
liver(checkwithyourdoctororpharmacisttoseeifthisappliestoanymedicinesyouaretaking)
methoxyurane(ananaesthetic),ifyouneedanoperation,tellyourdoctorordentistyouaretakingtetracycline
atovaquone(totreatpneumonia)
medicinessuchasantacidsorothermedicinescontaining
aluminium, calcium, iron, magnesium,
bismuthorzincsalts.DonottakeatthesametimeasTetracyclinetablets,asabsorptionoftetracyclinemaybereduced
sucralate(totreatulcers)
lithium(totreatbipolardisorder,depression)
digoxin(totreatanunevenheartbeat(arrhythmia))
methotrexate(usedinrheumatoidarthritis) strontium
ranelate(forosteoporosis)
colestipolorcolestyramine(totreathighcholesterol)
ergotamineandmethysergide(totreatorpreventmigraine)
Pregnancy and breasteeding
Ifyouarepregnant,planningtobecomepregnantorarebreast
feedingaskyourdoctororpharmacistforadvicebeforetakinganymedicineastetracyclinecouldharmthebaby.
Tests Duringlongtermtreatmentblood,kidneyandlivertestswill
becarriedout.
Taking with ood or milk
Donottakethetabletsatthesametimeasmilkorfood,asthey
canmakethemedicinelesseective.
