HOW TO USE
This brochure is intended as a guide to selecting the right
Barastoc feed for your pigs. It has been produced by our team of
nutritionists in consultation with experienced Australian pig farmers.
The nutritional needs of pigs change significantly over their lives,
through weaning, growth, finishing, reproduction and lactation.
Barastoc’s range of pig feeds have been specifically formulated to
provide balanced and complete nutrition for pigs at each of these
life stages. Following this guide will help you to select and adapt
your feed to optimise their wellbeing, growth and productivity.
The products presented in this brochure are intended for
smaller commercial producers or lifestyle farmers, who prefer
the convenience of bags over bulk feeds, and who like to directly
hand feed without the need for further preparation.
If you are a producer whose demand exceeds six tonnes,
we recommend that you consider our bulk pig feeds instead.
For more information on these, see page 17.

PIG FEED RANGE | 54 | PIG FEED RANGE
Pigs require six general
classes of nutrients:
Water, Protein (amino acids),
Fats (fatty acids), Carbohydrates,
Minerals and Vitamins.
Energy, although not a specific
nutrient, is an important nutritional
component and is primarily derived
from the oxidation of carbohydrates
and fat during digestion.
NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF PIGS
WATER
Pigs need continuous and easy access
to clean drinking water, beginning
before weaning. Normally, growing
pigs consume 2 – 3 L of water for every
kilogram of dry feed, but the amount
required will vary with the pig’s age,
the type of feed and the environmental
temperature. A pig’s water needs will
also change depending on its level
of activity and whether it is lactating.
PROTEIN
Dietary protein supplies pigs with
amino acids, which are required for
maintenance and muscle growth.
It is particularly important for sows,
supporting reproductive tissues and
the development of foetuses during
gestation, and milk production during
lactation. Of the 22 amino acids,
10 are essential for a pig and must
be supplied in the right quantities in
their diet. Of these 10, lysine is the
most important, as it is the first limiting
amino acid on health and wellness.
CARBOHYDRATES
Dietary carbohydrates, along with
fats, are the main source of energy
for pigs, fuelling their activity, growth
and ability to maintain a constant
body temperature.
FATS
Good quality fats provide pigs with
energy and essential fatty acids,
such as linoleic acid. Linoleic acid is
the building block to a number of other
long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids,
which are required by pigs for normal
growth and development.
MINERALS
The most important minerals for pigs
are calcium and phosphorus (which
support skeletal growth and various
essential metabolic functions), iron
(necessary for haemoglobin formation)
and copper (critical for enzymes).
VITAMINS
Pigs must obtain a range of vitamins
from their diet, including vitamin A,
the B group vitamins, vitamin D and
vitamin K. They are, however, capable
of making their own vitamin C.
ENERGY
A pig’s energy requirements are
expressed as kilocalories (kcal) of
digestible energy (DE), metabolisable
energy (ME), or net energy (NE).
The energy requirements of pigs
are influenced by their weight
(which influences the maintenance
requirement), their genetic capacity
for lean tissue growth or milk
production, and the environmental
temperature at which they are housed.
While all pigs require these nutrients,
their specific requirements will depend
on other factors, including breed, sex,
stage of life, and environment (outdoor
versus indoor housing). The health
and wellbeing of your pigs depends
on reaching the right balance of all of
these nutrients, specific to their needs.
This is the primary goal of the
Barastoc range.
6 | PIG FEED RANGE PIG FEED RANGE | 7
At Barastoc, we understand
that performance and productivity
sit alongside nutrition when it
comes to selecting the right feed.
Feed is a major contributor to your
production costs, and an optimised
feeding program will ensure that you’re
seeing the absolute best productivity
returns for your spend.
The key to this is providing your pigs
with the right nutrients in the right
balance at each of the critical stages
of their life cycle.
YOUNG PIG FEEDS
The nutrition that piglets receive
as soon as they are weaned sets
the pattern for their future growth.
Providing them with a high quality,
palatable feed from the outset lays the
foundations for achieving an optimal
adult live weight and body fat score.
Young pig feeds should be highly
palatable and digestible, with the right
amino acid profile and energy levels
to fuel their rapidly growing bodies
without encouraging excess fat.
GROWING PIG FEEDS
Live weight gain from a high
feed-efficiency conversion rate is the
primary goal at this stage of a pig’s
life. This is achieved when the feed
is palatable to the pigs, and has the
right balance of amino acids and
energy to help developing pigs grow
to their genetic potential.
FINISHING PIG FEEDS
Prior to taking the pigs to market or
slaughter, a specifically formulated
finishing feed will support them to
increase their lean muscle-to-fat ratio.
FEEDING FOR SUCCESS
BREEDING PIG FEEDS
Breeding pigs are the backbone of a
successful commercial operation. Once
you have decided that a pig has the
right characteristics to be a breeder,
it needs to be put on a special diet from
22 weeks of age. A typical sow will have
10 farrowings over her lifetime, with
each farrowing producing 7 – 12 piglets.
This places huge demands on the
sow’s body, so it is important for her
health (and that of her piglets until
they are weaned) that she is provided
a diet with the right balance of energy,
protein, vitamins and minerals to
maintain health and wellness.
8 | PIG FEED RANGE PIG FEED RANGE | 9
Barastoc have a dedicated team
of pig nutritionists and technicians
with a combined experience of
over 50 years formulating diets
for pigs to maximise their health,
wellness and productivity.
TRANSITIONING BETWEEN FEEDS
When changing from one feed
to another, it is important to run
the transition over a 3 – 5 day
period, to allow the pigs to adjust
without any loss in appetite and
feed conversion efficiency.
STORAGE REQUIREMENTS
Barastoc pig feeds are subject to
rigorous quality assurance testing
to ensure a shelf life of six months
from date of manufacture.
To optimise product quality and
shelf life we recommend that the
feed be stored below 30oC and
off the floor in a cool, dry, well
ventilated area, protected from
direct sunlight.
