A1. Getting Members Involved in theUnionPresenter: Lynda Larson, LaborRelations Specialist, Suffolk RegionalOffice

The privitization of public hospitals, the“business model” changes in healthcareby the insurance industry, and theindustrialization of nursing and otherhealthcare practices by non-healthcareprofessionals in schools are just some ofthe reasons why we need strong,powerful healthcare locals. Membershipinvolvement is critical. This sessiondiscusses how to motivate members tobecome actively involved in the unionand strategies to build member activismat the worksite, and in the local.

A2. HPV Vaccine and AdolescentGynecology - CEU CreditPresenter: Ellen McTigue, NursePractitioner, Gynecologic OncologyService, Department of Obstetrics andGynecology, Downstate Medical Center

This is an opportunity to learn about thenew HPV Human Papilloma Vaccinedeveloped to offer protection against fourHPV types, which together cause 70% ofcervical cancers and 90% of genitalwarts. Before youngsters becomesexually active, this vaccine providesprotection and immunity against mosttypes of HPV and cervical cancer. Inaddition, there will be discussion onadolescent gynecology questions andconcerns.

A3. SPEAK - Train-the-Trainer onSuicide Prevention EducationAwareness Kit - CEU CreditPresenter: John Kelly, Ph.D., SchoolPsychologist, President - New YorkAssociation of School Psychologists

SPEAK is an information kit publishedby the NYS Office of Mental Healthdesigned to educate the public, health careproviders and educators in therecognition of early symptoms ofdepression and strategies for preventionof teen suicide. Workshops have beendeveloped by the New York Associationof School Psychologists based upon theSPEAK material. In these workshops,there is information about suicide andsuicide prevention, the risk factors andthe warning signs, and resources abouthow to seek help. Workshops arefocused on training school staff at anelementary, middle, and high schoollevel. In addition, there is a “peer”training module for middle and highschool students, parent training modulefor middle and high school aged students,as well as a module focused on depressionin adults. This workshop is a train-the-trainer session on all five modules,including a demonstration of one of themodules. At the conclusion of theworkshop, participants will leave thesession with a set of the materials in printand electronic formats.

A4. Safe Oxygen Administration -CEU CreditPresenter: David Teneyck, ClinicalCoordinator, Respiratory and InvasiveCardiovascular Technology Programs,Hudson Valley Commjnity College

This two-hour session provides a surveyof safe oxygen administration includingindications for oxygen administration,assessment of need and effectiveness, lowflow devices versus high flow, alternativeand current therapies for the home,hospital and skilled nursing facilities, andhazards of using oxygen. All healthcareprofessionals who work with oxygen inthese settings are welcome to askquestions and participate in thediscussion.

As a nation, we are in a period ofreflection as to what can be done to stemthe tide of violence in our schoolcommunities. Though some maycharacterize these incidents as happening“out of the blue”, the tragedy is theydon’t. In most cases, long before childrenmove into the danger zone, there wereclear and compelling signs of serioustrouble, signs that no one saw orrecogonized.

Join us for a workshop on the psychologyof dangerousness in children. Learn thesigns and signals of trouble. Learn aboutat-risk behaviors and characteristics. Learnhow to handle children in distress. Learnhow to prevent trouble down the road.

A6. Update on HIPAA - CEU CreditPresenter: Robert Reilly, AssociateCounsel , NYSUT Albany Office ofGeneral Counsel

This session provides a review of theprovisions of the Health InsurancePortability and accountability Act of 1996(HIPAA). HIPAA requirements apply tohealth care providers who submit claimselectronically, all health plans includingprivate and government programs andhealth care clearing houses. After a shortoverview of the law and regulations, mostof the workshop will be devoted todiscussion and questions related to yourhealthcare practice.

In every wealthy, industrialized nation inthe world except the United States, healthcare is provided to all residents throughsome form of government-financedprogram. In the U.S., 47 millionAmericans have no health care access,while tens of millions more areunderinsured. This workshop willdescribe the current situation, themovement for national health care, andwhat YOU can do to help make healthcare for all a reality!

B2. Update on Childhood andAdolescent Immunizations -CEU CreditPresenter: Cindy Schulte, B.S.N, R.N,.New York State Department of Health

New vaccines are being developed everyyear and immunization recommendationscontinue to change to address thesevaccines and the presence of vaccinepreventable diseases such as mumps,pertussis and varicella still occurring inour schools and communities. Thissession will highlight the new vaccines,their recommendations for children andadolescents, and proposed regulatorychanges. A summary of common VPDoutbreaks, including prevalence anddisease control measures, will also becovered.

B3. Understanding and Dealing withIndividuals Who Self-HarmPresenter: Amelio A. D’Onofrio, Ph.D.,Licensed Psychologist, Adult andAdolescent Psychotherapy, ClinicalProfessor and Director CounselingTraining Center, Fordham University,Author

As health-care professionals andeducators, we sometimes encounterindividuals who engage in disturbing andtroubling behaviors such as acts of self-harm. These can include intentionalinfliction of a range of physical injuries orpersistent engagement in high-risk anddestructive behaviors. This workshop will

explore the causes of self-harmingbehaviors including emotional/psychological underpinnings, identifyindividuals at greatest risk and highlightresources to deal with this issue.

B4. Dyspraxia - DevelopmentalCoordination Disorders (DCD) - CEUCreditPresenter: Martha M. Frank, Ph.D.,CAS, OTR/L, Associate Professor, TheSage Colleges

Often motor coordination problems mayoccur in children and adolescents whohave no obvious physical or mentalimpairments. These children andadolescents have been classified as havinga developmental coordination disorder(DCD). For those healthcareprofessionals working with children,DCD impacts gross motor, fine motorand oral motor development in children.This workshop provides an overview ofdyspraxia and discusses child safety andparticipation in recess, physicaleducation, pupil transportation, art,music and fine motor activities likehandwriting.

B5. Malpractice - Primer for Nurses, -CEU CreditPresenter: Karen J. Halpern, R.N.,Esq., Fumuso, Kelly, DeVerna, Synder,Swart and Farrell, LLP

With the increasing complexities ofpatients’ medical needs and changes in thehealth, education and privacy laws thatgovern nursing practice, this workshopexamines: malpractice, legal claimsagainst the nurse, actions if served withlegal papers, hiring an attorney, andpossible court proceedings. Questionsabout licensure, practice and liability willbe welcomed.

B6. Issues and Insights into the World ofFamily Caregiving - CEU CreditPresenter: Carol Levine, M.A.,.Director, Families and Health CareProject, United Hospital Fund

Join noted author and leading expertCarol Levine in a discussion on thechallenges of family caregivers and theirgrowing unmet needs. Changes indemographics, workforce patterns, andhealth care economics and services haveresulted in a dramatic change in the extentand complexity of caregiving. Unpaidfamily caregivers are largely responsiblefor providing this type of community carewhich takes a toll on the caregiver,physically, emotionally and financially.This session provides insights forhealthcare professionals who work withstudent, families, elderly and communityresource professionals.

PaymentPayment must accompany the registration form. The cost is $65.00 per person and covers theconference cost, materials, hotel parking and a continental breakfast and lunch. Pay online bycredit card or submit a check by mail payable to NYSUT to be received no later than February 9,2007.

CancellationsSubstitutions and cancellations will be accepted until February 23, 2007, after which no refunds willbe made.
