Continuing Education

Piedmont Community College has emerged as a leader in workforce development. With the implementation

of the Workforce Certification Academy©, PCC has taken progressive action to provide training to the citizens of our community so that they may be prepared to meet the workforce needs of our region. Recently, the College hosted a state-wide training event for 14 other NC community colleges so that they too might implement a world class training program for advanced manufacturing. The College’s Workforce Certification Academy© has been recognized statewide and nationally as a best practice model for preparing individuals for jobs in advanced manufacturing. I am very proud to be associated with an outstanding team of professionals and professionals who genuinely care about the people in our community. Providing training to the unemployed and underemployed who are interested in local jobs in Advanced Manufacturing, BioWorks, and Logistics.

Want a good paying job working in a production environment?

PCC’s WCA provides short-term training leading to national or industry recognized credentials in the following careers and provides financial assistance to those who are unemployed or underemployed. See page 8 for more information about financial assistance.

Certified Production TechnicianThis 192-hour course provides training for national certification in four areas: Safety Awareness, Manufacturing Processes, Quality Practices and Maintenance Awareness and prepares students to obtain employment in advanced manufacturing facilities. In addition, students successfully completing this course will also be eligible to enroll in the new OSHA-10 and OSHA-Forklift classes. Students interested in becoming a Certified Production Technician must report to the Workforce Training Center for the required Orientation to Certified Production Technician class:

Certified Logistics Technician (CLT)This 100-hour course provides a training for national certification as a Certified Logistics Associate and as a Certified Logistics Technician and prepares students to obtain employment in logistics and/or warehousing and distribution. Students successfully completing this course will also be eligible to enroll in the new OSHA-10 and OSHA-Forklift classes. Students interested in becoming a Certified Logistics Technician must report to the Workforce Training Center for the required Orientation to Certified Logistics Technician class:

Certified Logistics Technician

BioWork Process Technician CourseCourse dates are: Jan. 18 - May 10

This 128-hour hybrid course provides certification prep training and will prepare you for employment as a process technician for a biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or chemical manufacturing company. Strong computer skills and internet access are required to successfully complete the online training portion. The classroom training includes hands-on lab activities and will be held on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The BioWork course will be offered again starting in June (dates to be determined). Individuals who meet eligibility criteria and successfully complete the orientation course may be able to receive financial assistance to take the BioWork Process Technician course. Orientation is an optional course if you are not seeking financial assistance. The financial aid may also include travel reimbursement back and forth to class. The course will include an orientation to Blackboard, the College’s online course delivery system, an overview of the BioWork course, requirements to the complete the course, study skills for success, Internet KeyTrain, North Carolina Career Readiness Certificate and CASAS assessments.

Project Skill-UpWorked in tobacco? Lost your main source of income and need to train for a new career? This special grant assists those negatively affected by the decline in the tobacco industry by assisting with up to $300 of tuition and fees for short-term training provided through the Workforce Certification Academy©. Programs include BioWork Process Technician, Certified Production Technician and Certified Logistics Technician. Refer to page 5 for more information.

Workforce Investment Act If you are a youth ages 16-21 years of age, you may qualify for the College’s Comprehensive Youth program. This program provides financial assistance for youth to participate in continuing education and/or curriculum training. Travel reimbursement is also available to support the expense of traveling to selected training. In addition, this program provides an opportunity for youth to participate in paid work experience and summer jobs in order to explore potential careers and to learn positive work habits. Golden LEAF FoundationMid-Skills Initiative Grant

This two year grant was awarded to the College in Spring 2013 to support training provided through the Workforce Certification Academy©. Through this grant, funding is available to support training for Certified Production Technician and Certified Logistics Technician. The grant also provides funding to pay for certification fees and travel reimbursement associated with attending

these courses. Refer to page 5-6 for more information.

This new grant provides the opportunity for those who are unemployed and underemployed to obtain short-term training for local jobs at no cost to the student. Through this program, tuition and certification fees are paid on behalf of eligible students for training in the following areas that result in national credentials:

The objective of the incubator is to help accelerate the sustainable development of small businesses by providing entrepreneurs with an array of resources which include: office space, access to equipment, small business counseling and networking opportunities; all of which are critical to successful business growth.

The Nurse Aide I training program prepares you to be able to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Upon successful completion of this 140-hour course, you will be eligible to take the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Competency Examination. The successful completion of the exam is required for listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry. Individuals must be listed on the Nurse Aide Registry to fulfill employment requirements in the health care industry as a Nurse Aide I in North Carolina.

Computers for New Users/Beginners

This course is designed for the brand new computer user. It will introduce you to the parts of a personal computer and some common computer terminology. You will learn general concepts that will help you work in a Windows environment on the computer as well as practice using a mouse and keyboard. You will also learn the basics of sending, receiving, and replying to email messages using a webmail account. No prior computer knowledge is needed for the class, but a USB flash drive is required.

General InformationRegistrationRegistration is open to anyone at least 18 years of age or older. Registration may be completed in person, by mail or by phone. Individuals who are 16-17 years of age may enroll with written permission from their parent/guardian and the principal of the high school they are attending (Completed Concurrent Enrollment form required). Registration for minors in Adult Basic Skills requires parent/guardian, the school superintendent, and the principal’s written permission (completed form required). Registration Fees and FeesPayment of the registration fee prior to the first class is required. Some courses have a limited enrollment and are filled on a first-paid basis. No student shall be permit-ted to register for a new course with an outstanding balance unless payment is paid or payment of such outstanding balance has been guaranteed in writing by a financially responsible person or organization. Registration Fees for Occupational Extension Courses (unless otherwise denoted) for courses starting on or after August 15, 2013 are:

Additional fees may be required for certain courses. There is an $8 student liability fee required for nursing and medical services course. Students also have the option of purchasing Student Accident Insurance at a cost of $1.25.

Waivers • Registration fee waivers apply to volunteer and county/municipal fire

departments, rescue squads, EMS agencies and law enforcement depart-ments as long as the course is applicable to the training needs of the agency/department.

• Fee waivers for senior citizens are no longer allowable as per the General Statutes of the State of North Carolina.

Refund and Course Repeat Policies

RefundsRefunds for Continuing Education courses are made as follows: 100% if requested before course begins or if the course is cancelled, 75% if requested after a course begins but before 10% of the total course meetings. No refund if after this date. In order to receive a refund, the student must officially withdraw from the class.

Course RepeatsState regulations require that students who take an occupational extension course more than twice within a five-year period must pay their cost for the course based on self-support rates. For a job-related course taken more than twice in a five-year period, students must pay additional charges for the course at the self-support rate, unless the student is required to repeat the course for certification or license renewal.
