From the Principal’s Desk...
Greetings Holy Rosary Families!
We begin the cold month of December with the warm, Christian season of Advent. Dur-
ing Advent, we prepare for the celebration that commemorates the birth of Jesus. At Holy
Rosary, we are preparing for His birth with many unique activities. Each grade will observe
the days of Advent by lighting candles of purple or pink and praying and singing by their
classroom wreath. Also, we will start each Wednesday morning in December in the gym, as
an entire school community, and light the candles of the Holy Rosary Advent Wreath while
praying and singing. Another schoolwide activity will be our loving preparation of Jesus’
crib. When a child performs a good deed, he or she will place one piece of hay in the crib
at the entrance of the school. By December 25th, we hope that Baby Jesus will be resting
peacefully in a soft, hay-filled manger. Our children are learning that the Christmas season
is about giving and taking care of others.
You too can encourage this true meaning of Christmas in your homes. Each night before
dinner, light your Advent wreath candles and pray together. Give your nativity scene a
place of honor, and as your family passes it each day, they will be reminded of that first
Christmas and make thoughtful choices throughout their day. The culmination of our
preparations will be our pageant at Holy Saviour Parish on Wednesday, December 19th at
7PM. Please join us to share in the joy of Christmas through the eyes and voices of our
children.
I wish you all a wonderful Christmas. Enjoy this time with your families and may all of you
make special memories.
God’s graces to you this Christmas as always!
Mary Ann

Dear Parents and Guardians:
Greetings in the Lord as we observe our annual liturgical season of Advent! The First
Sunday of Advent marks the beginning of the new Church year, the Year of Grace 2019.
“In this season of Advent, we are called to expand the horizons of our hearts, to be
amazed by the life which presents itself each day with newness,” Pope Francis said in his
Angelus address on Nov. 27, 2016. “In order to do this,” Our Holy Father explained, “we
must learn not to depend on our own certainties, on our own established strategies, be-
cause the Lord comes at a time that we do not imagine. He comes to bring us into a more
beautiful and grand dimension.”
Advent is a season of hope, a time of anticipation and expectation as we await the
fulfillment of God’s promise to send us a Savior and Redeemer. We human beings cannot
live without hope. So, we rejoice in celebrating the Nativity of the Lord on Christmas Day.
God fulfilled His promise to us on the birthday of Jesus, when the Word became flesh and
dwelled among us — a mystery we refer to as the Incarnation of the Lord. We Christians
believe that Jesus is the Messiah and Son of God, Risen Savior and Lord of all.
Advent has a two-fold character. It’s a time of preparation for the First Coming of
Christ at Christmas; and, the Second Coming of Christ at the end of the world when He
will return in glory to judge the living and the dead.
Advent is an opportune time to recall the cry of the early Christians: “Come, Lord
Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20), a liturgical refrain similar to the Aramaic expression Marana tha,
“O Lord, come!”
May the season of Advent find us being reconciled with God, with others, and within
ourselves by receiving the sacraments of Penance and Holy Eucharist. And, may the light of
the Prince of Peace shine brightly in our hearts and homes during the Christmas season
and throughout the year.
God bless you,
Rev. Joseph J. Quindlen

Resource Room
The Idiom of the Week is continuing this school year. The idiom is announced each morning with a definition
and a sentence to go along with the idiom. The following idioms have already been featured: holy cow, off the
wall, out of line, pull my leg, on the ball, give it a shot, cross your fingers, ring a bell, be in hot water, and off the
top of my head.
Try and use the idioms with your children. If your child comes up with a sentence using the idiom that they
would like to have announced in the morning, send the sentence and your child’s name to
[email protected] and their sentence may be the featured idiom sentence one morning.
The December holiday idioms will be: deck the halls, trim the tree, dropping hints, and Christmas comes but
once a year. — Mrs. Keith
Pre-K
Pre-K learned all about the significance of voting and even got to practice voting on their favorite farm animal
for Election Day! Going along with the monthly theme: Down on Farm, Pre-K got to make a lot of fun art pro-
jects. One of which allowed them to practice their measuring skills to make doors on their paper barns! They
also learned about the importance of giving thanks and discussed what they are grateful for this Thanksgiv-
ing. The focus of God Time this month was giving thanks to God for all that he has blessed us with and how we
should always make sure to take care of his creatures. The students really enjoyed getting to make their very
own bird feeders! —Mrs. Gill
Social Studies
In social studies class, 5th grade is starting to learn about the regions of the United States. They recently com-
pleted a project where they became a tour guide taking you on a journey to various attractions throughout the
Mid-Atlantic Region. 6th grade is currently starting our unit on Russia. They will learn all about the arms race,
space race and the competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. 7th grade just finished learn-
ing about the American Revolution. They are excited to start learning about George Washington's first cabinet
and hear some songs from the Hamilton soundtrack! 8th grade just completed a group project on the trans-
continental railroad discussing the importance of the first reliable cross country transportation. —Ms. Boris
Honors Math
On the day before Thanksgiving break, 8th grade Honors Math worked on some mixed-review practice prob-
lems while watching Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.
One question stumped us. Let's see if you can figure it out:
A bag of sweet and sour jelly beans has 22 jelly beans. If 8 of the jelly beans are sweet and 6 of the jelly beans
are red, and 10 jelly beans are neither sweet nor red, how many sweet red jelly beans are in the bag?
—Mrs. Higgins
2nd Grade
Second grade is starting to prepare for the sacrament of Reconciliation! We have been learning all about for-
giveness and sins. We are all eagerly waiting to receive the sacrament and grow closer to God! To go along
with the theme of Election Day, second grade learned the significance of voting, and even got to vote for our
favorite subject! We have several future mathematicians in second grade! —Christina Reale

Kindergarten
Kindergarten learned many things this month! We learned about Election
Day and Veterans Day. The children learned who Veterans are and why
they are so important to us. The children learned that Mr. Pickering is a
Veteran and they even got to see his Marine Corps picture! The children
shared with the class about Veterans they know and some even brought in
pictures to show their classmates! The children also focused on the histo-
ry and meaning of Thanksgiving this month. In Religion, we discussed the
things for which we are thankful to God. We all have so much to be
thankful for! We made "Thankful Turkeys" and displayed them outside our classroom for all to see! We ended
our unit about the First Thanksgiving by celebrating with our own Thanksgiving Feast! Holy Rosary's little Na-
tive Americans and Pilgrims had a fabulous time and ate lots of yummy food! —Mrs. Pickering
3rd Grade
In November, 3rd grade has been working on poetry. They were able to put their poetry skills, as well as their
knowledge of the parts of speech, to work when they wrote an acrostic poem about pumpkins and a cinquain
about the fall. In math, we have been learning about graphing. The students reviewed bar graphs, picture
graphs, and line plots. We are wrapping up the chapter with a graphing project about holidays. After Thanks-
giving, the students will dive into multiplication. I know they are all very excited to get that started!
Science
1st grade is learning about light. We have been discussing how light shines and ways to reflect light. We re-
cently used a mirror to reflect light. Next, we will be refract a ray of light to make a rainbow.
2nd grade is learning about rocks. We have been describing the properties of rocks to determine if the rock is
sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic.
3rd grade is learning about the water cycle. We have been investigating the water cycle through evaporation,
condensation, and precipitation experiments.
4th grade is learning about the engineering design process. We are building bridges using straws and will test
them using cups full of pennies. I wonder which bridge will be the strongest and sturdiest.
Religion (Middle and Upper Grades)
5th grade has been busy learning about Mother Teresa’s life as a child, and the struggles she encountered on
her way to become a nun. The class is about to embark on a new poetry adventure, and continues to work on
writing skills. Our recent peer editing workshop was a great success, and students realized the importance of
having someone else read their work before submitting a final copy! Parts of speech continue to challenge the
students, especially as we delve into diagramming and analyzing sentences!
6th grade religion learns about God’s mercy, and learn that our ancestors are not so different from us.
7th grade is learning about how Jesus practiced his religion, providing a glimpse into the customs celebrated by
our Jewish friends. Research reports will provide new insights for our class. The class is also beginning Awaken-
ings, to learn more about the times in which Jesus lived, from a young girl’s point of view.
8th grade hosted our Thanksgiving Prayer Service, and will be busy learning lines for the Christmas Pag-
eant. The class will soon read Be The Change and learn how, even as young adults, they can make positive
changes in the world. —Fran Luthy

ELA. In Religion, they are learning about Jesus' love for them through various Bible stories. They love hearing
stories from the Bible. For Thanksgiving, they shared what they were thankful for and listened to letters from
their parents thanking God for them and why they are so special. We have been talking about sharing our love
