RADIUM RAT PANIC

Hats nre not fond of radium. Theyarc Inclined to be rather supersti-tious about tho wonderful mineral. Atleast that would bo a fnlr Inferencefrom a little experiment that Messrs,Drown & Cohen, the radium experts, whose danco Is to nppear at the

Theatre this week, Tho base-ment of the Orpheum has been a favorIte tryst I iik place for the rodents andthey hao fairly overrun it. When H.L. Cohen heard of this he asked Man-ager Cohen of the Orpheum for perm Is- -

slon to try nn experiment, which wasreadily accorded. So Messrs. Drownand Cohen set a trap and caught ahuge grandfather rat. Then theyimeared It with the strange white com-pound which is used In tho radiumdance.

This Is an ordinary-lookin- g powd-ery substance, but It has peculiar prop-erties. It absorbs light and theniglvesIt off again. So Mr. Rat, well coatedwith white, was placed In the rays ofA mtmntr IItia lint,, n m Mma nl .Uahvve .i.iiu l.ftl.l IWI U IMUC UUU ini-t- i .liberated In tho cellar. In the gloom'or the rat inreatcd place he gave off nghostly light that seemed very strangelo his comrades. They didn't knowhim and Immediately thought thatsome deceased rodent was ghost-walkin-

They fled In terror from theplace and have not been seen since.Even the radium rat, panic-stricke-

and afraid of himself. Is running yet.Tho radium dance will bo produced InIts' entirety tho whole of this weekIn connection with tho Stock Companywhich plays Cnmlllo Monday, Tuesdayand Wednesday.

PROGRAM TO SUIT

ALL SCHOOLS AND

YilWloAt the recent meeting of the Honrd

of Education Commissioner Knrrlng- -ton made Inquiry regarding tho patriotIc program for the use In tho publicschools, for which a number of plunswero receded In competition for thoMcCandlcss J0 prize. Superintendentot Public Instruction Habbltt answeredat the tlmo that he was preparing aprogram using that of Miss Lyons, which won ths McCandlcss prize as abasis, but adding to It the best featuresof other plans which had been sub-mitted In the contest. '

The program which Babbitt Is get-ting together will thus contain ull thohost features of tile plans and willembody many good Ideas. While Itwill bo too long to be uved by nnyschool In Its entirety. It is so modeledthat selections from It can bo used tosuit different places, circumstances andoccasions. Thus schools situated Indistricts when rainy weather prevailswill generally hae to uso a programsuitable for indoors, whllo those whohave good grounds, and where goodweather prevails can have open air ex-

ercises, with rallying around tho Hagpole, etc.

nmbermore. It Is not Intended thatany ono school shall uso tho samoprogram ecry day of the year. Selections can bo made from the gcnoralplan so as to mako the program eachday suitable to the Individual occasion, which may present Itself. Thus,on tho bltthday ot famous men seluC'tlons from their works or speechesshould be read, or a history ot theirlives and deeds given by the teacher. The songs and prayers used can alsobe greatly vurled. Thus, for Instance,a llttlo poem written by Philip 11.Dodgo, and which Is much liked by thogovernor, will ho Included In tho gen-eral program and recommended for use.It runs as follows:

Hawaii land Is fair,Hlch are tho gifts wo sharo. This Is our common prayer,O land of light,We may Join heart and handThat as u noblo bandTill all Hawaii's landStands for the right.

Habbltt Intends to have tho Droeramprinted In pamphlet form for distrib-

ution among tho teachers. Ho hopes IhiI will have It ready to submit to tho next

Electric 'CleanlinessThere Is really but one way to keep rooms unspotted from the

world, to make every dusky dusty corner wholesome, fresh and attractive; anci tnat is to do all cleaning in the shadowy places by elec-tric light.

With electric bulbs In badly lighted halls and Inner rooms, noparticle of dust can escape, and th death knell of moths, ant

and roaches la sounded. To clean home by electric light Is like working In sunlight, and

it Is no greater drain on the oxygen of the room than a sunbeam Is.And a bright light lessens the work of cleaning.

4th. That every now residence erected In theso districts Is not only ben- -cllclal to the districts themselves, bbutwould be the means of Increasing therevenue of the Itapld Transit Co. byreason of additional travel over Itslines.

Cth. That the traffic over the Walalao lino Is heavier than the Mnnoa line, which enjoys a twenty-minut- e service:that there are now COO dally regularpatrons of the road and that this numbcr will be largely Increased durlntluio coming year, on account of tntnew residences that are being added.

Oth. That tho cost of placing addi-tional switches (should this be neces-sary) and the general car expensewould soon be made up to the companyby Its additional revenue Induced bysucn twenty minute service.

10th. That the proposed Improve-ments now contemplated by tho Hoardof Supervisors of the County of Oahuwin result in the opening up and tak-ing over tho cross streets and roads.

11th. That the majority of the prop, crty holders nro members of the Wal-alao, Kaimuki and Palolo ImprovementClub, whose efforts have been nnd willbe devoted solely and exclusively tothe beautifying, population and en-hancing the property of these districts.

Advertiser In its recent unjustifiableand prejudicial attack on native labur.

Maul road contracts have been donoby natives mostly, and llko nativeswherever they work under capabloroad lunas, their services are reallyworth more to the government andtho contractor than tho paltry sum ofono dollar per diem. In fact, any reas-onable human being will acknowledgethat any d Hawaiian, the su-

provements dono moro cheaply thanIf there wero no tuch competition ex-

isting. The contractors will neverallow natives to sleep at noonday, andIt Is doubtful if such condition of

ever existed anywhere clso In'Hawaii net. The government Inspect-ors sco to It that the work Is dono

to tho specifications, and ifthere has been any fraudulent workperformed on our roads, tho blame, Ifuny, Bhould be chiefly between thucontractor, the Inspector and tho roadengineer, whose duties are to Bee thatall such works are performed In afirst-clas- s manner and according tuspecifications. There has been trou-bi-

Tho result of Association footballgames played last Saturday caused agreat difference In the standing of thotcamB in the League First of all, thol'unahou team, which has not been doing very great wonders heretofore, tied tho lctorlou8 Sialics after aBtrenuous game. For a while It looked as If tho Puns might well expectto remain victors, they having scoredtheir first and only goal In tho firsthalf, which left the Sialics with nothing to their credit. In tho socond half, however, the Sialics pulled togetherand managed to save themselves fromdefeat by scoring a goal a few minutesbefore time was called, leaving thescore 1 to 1,

In tho second game tho lolanls, whoheretofore havo seemed to have acinch on tho second place, wero beat-en by tho Diamond Heads, which hadbeen considered no match for it at all.Tho Heads played a strong, nggrcss-Iv-

and consistent game and deservedthelpvlctory. Tho lolanls havo to relyentirely on their forward combinationof Dlackman, Anderson and Woo,which is probably tho best combina-tion in tho League. This is, however, tho whole strength of tbo tenm, thobacks being woefully weak, especiallyIn their backs,, and tho poor defensivework was tho causo of the defeat.

Tho teams playing and tho standingof tho teams follows:Mallei. Punahous.
