Security• Lock your office
– The PRB is generally very safe, but laptops and other valuables have been stolen

• PRB has 24/7 keycard access - Keycard needed on weekdays 6pm-7am and
any time on weekends/holidays
Bike Parking Bike room in PRB 1170B (just
inside the loading dock) daily users only must use hooks

Course Registration• You must be registered a week before the first day
of classes (there is a significant fine for not registering)
• GTA must register for a minimum of 8 credit hours. It is expected that you take:
– Quantum Mechanics I – Physics 7501 (3 credits)(3 credits)– Analytic and Numerical Methods of Physics- Physics 7701 (3 credits)– Classical and Statistical Physics - Physics 7601 (3 credits)
– Research Survey Class - Physics 6780 (1 credit)– Sugarbaker’s teaching class (even fellowship students) - Physics
7891– Research with a professor - Physics 7998
Only second semester for GTA’s, both semesters for fellowship students
• Fellowship students should sign up for 12 credit hours• To get to 12 you will need to sign up for an additional elective(s)
( 8805’s) or Physics 7998 with Pelz• You can change this in the first couple weeks to Physics 7998 with the
professor of your choice

Time managementAs new grad students you need to be aware
that, more then likely, you will spend more time on school/work then you did in undergrad.
You should expect:~10-15 hours per class per week
Studying and homework~ 12-15 hours per week of in class time~ 12-15 hours of TA duties
preparing for class, teaching, and grading
Finding a Research Group• It is YOUR responsibility to find a research
group • Begin looking for a professor to work with

• If you need direction, check PGSC website which shows some open potentially available GRA positions

We pay out of our paycheck: COTA Bus Service Fee: $13.50 per semester Student Activity Fee: $37.50 per semester Student Legal Services Fee: $40 per year (can opt
out) Recreational Fee (RPAC): $123 per semester Student Union Fee: $74.40 per semester Student Health Insurance: $172.50 per semester
You can opt out and use your parent’s health insurance
Health insurance• 85% premium covered by OSU for you and your
dependents (wife/husband/children/significant others) You pay $172.50 per semester – OSU pays $977.50
• Wilce Student Health Center • Convenient, on campus (292-4321) – General practitioners, gynecologists, dentists,
ophthalmologists, physical therapy, etc. – Some special care is referred to OSU Medical Center– Most services are 100% covered by Student Health
Insurance Only $15 copay
• You can also see doctors outside the student health center: most services covered 90% in-network, 60% out-of-network, ie. much more expensive
OPERS: To save, or not to save• Most grad students opt OUT
• 10% of your paycheck is taken out• It makes a minimal amount of interest while you’re in
school• If you want the money immediately after you
graduate they take 1/3 of all the money as a penalty• Can roll money into IRA w/ NO penalty
• May be good if you plan on working in Ohio for your career
• Must opt out by Mid-Sept. Failure to opt out means you are automatically enrolled.
