Homework. Homework will be assigned each week on Tuesday and will be due backHomework. Homework will be assigned each week on Tuesday and will be due back the following Tuesday. We will be using the Mastering Physics web site to submit and grade your assignments. (The course name on the Mastering Physics website is MPWEBBPHYS221.) Chapter Quizzes. There will be 10 chapter quizzes per semester, usually given in class on Tuesday of each week. Each quiz will test the basic understanding of the material from the chapter discussed in the previous week in class. The best 9 quiz grades will be used in determining your semester quiz grade. Typically a quiz will be given at the end of a chapter, however deviations from this plan, if necessary, will be announced in classannounced in class.

Overview of Light and Optics

We will first discuss the nature of light and how it propagates through matter and interacts with various interfaces between materials. This discussion will then be followed by the introduction of the concepts of Geometrical Optics and optical devices. We will then proceed to a discussion of the principals ofWe will then proceed to a discussion of the principals of interference. Finally, we will conclude this section with a discussion of the principals of diffractionprincipals of diffraction.
