Culture ● 1850 two roman catholic priests established a mission on the red lake bands ● catholic nuns from the benedictine monastery in St. Joseph founded the St. Mary’s mission at Red Lake● They organized a boarding school at the mission to serve Ojibwe girls and taught them english and christianity ● over time residents adopted Roman Catholicism, many stayed with Ojibwe rituals and traditions, including funeral and

mourning practices.● This reservation belongs to the Red Lake Band of the Chippewa

In the industry's heyday, commercial fishing was done with gill nets. Fishermen would use huge nets to scoop walleye out of Red Lake, hundreds of pounds at a time. The fish processing plant in Redby was supplied mostly by gill-netters who made their living at fishing.That's all changed now. Tribal members are restricted to catching fish one at a time, by hook and line only
