Photoshop Tutorial # 1: Pop Art Inspired Portraits
*Make sure you follow ALL directions so that you get the correct final result *
Step 1: Open one of the portraits you took for this assignment in Photoshop
Step 2: Crop your image into a square
1. Select
the Crop
Tool
2. Select 1 x 1
ratio (square)
3. Click the
check t crop
Step 3: Remove Subject from background using selection tool
Step 4: Outline your subject using selection tool, then select refine edge
1. Use the Quick
Selection Tool to

Step 5: Smooth, adjust to refine edge and select OK
Step 6: Select Add Layer Mask to remove background

Step 7: Add a new blank layer
Step 8: Drag the new layer so that it underneath the layer with the portrait
Add a New Layer
Step 9: Fill the Layer with a background color of your choice and select ok * The color square
on top is the foreground color, you must pick the square underneath for background color!!!
Step 9: Fill the Layer with a color by holding down CTRL & Backspace

Be sure to select the

Step 9: Add a threshold adjustment layer, adjust threshold, then clip the image
Step 10: Add Color Following these steps…. (see below)

Step 11: Repeat Step 10 and add other colors….DON’T FORGET TO CHANGE LAYER
MODE TO MULTIPLY
Step 12: Group All of your layers together by Selecting the first Layer, Holding down Shift
and selecting the Last layer

Step 13: Press CTRL + G
Step 14: Select the folder, Hold down CTRL + T, Change Height and Width to 50%, Click the
check to exit free transform
1. Select the
Group 1 Layer
and Hold
down CTRL + T
2. Change Height (H)
and Width (W) both to
50% and move to top
left corner
3. Click the check
to exit free
transform
Step 15: Select CTRL + J on group layer to create 4 images, move 4 groups to fill entire square
Step 16: Add a hue/saturation adjustment 3 of the groups. Be sure to clip the adjustment layer
Step 17: ALL DONE. FLATTEN YOUR IMAGE……SAVE AS (jpeg) and POST to your
BLOG
