3 BLUES NEWS October 2014

Thanks to the many blues supporters who stepped up and contributed to the cause, we were able to reach our goal for the Sara Marin Headstone Dedication project. The stone was un-veiled at Louisville Cemetery on Friday, September 19. The Jake Leg Stompers of Murfrees-boro, TN performed a few songs and got a little help from Maria Muldaur who was in town for the National Jug Band Jubilee. Even some of Martin's relatives were present for the ceremo-ny. We'll have more on the dedication in next month's issue of Blues News. The blues society's 26th Anniversary Celebration will take place on Saturday, November 8 at Headliners Music Hall. We have a great show lined up with the Sad Sam Blues Jam of Bloom-ington, IN, Tas Cru and His Tortured Souls from Chaumont, NY and The Cash Box Kings from Chicago, IL. The Sad Sam Blues Jam represented the River Basin Blues Society of Evans-ville, IN in the youth division at this year's International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. The Blues Foundation awarded Tas Cru the 2014 Keeping the Blues Alive award in the area of blues education. Cru has developed a Blues in the School program and he will demonstrate that for the KBS at a local school on Friday, November 7. The headliner for the night is Blind Pig recording artist The Cash Box Kings. Admission is $10 but it's free for KBS members so

check the address label on this issue of the newsletter and make sure you are current on your membership. The Shera-ton Louisville Riverside Hotel in Jeffersonville, IN is offering blues fan a special rate of $69/night the weekend of the anni-versary show. Just book your room online at https://www.starwoodmeeting.com/Book/KBS by October 31. Notable events this month include Paul Thorn at Headliners Music Hall on Thursday, October 2. Thorn really wowed the crowd at this year's Ribberfest in Madison, IN. Robert Cray is at the Grand Theatre in Frankfort, KY on Monday, October 6. The Grand will also host Tin Can Buddha on Friday, October 17. Kelly Richey of Cincinnati, OH is performing at a ben-efit for the Kentucky Waterways Alliance on Friday, October 10 at the Gheens Foundation Lodge in the Parklands of Floyds Fork. Stevie Ray's Blues Bar will celebrate it's 20th anniversary on Sunday, October 19 featuring the first band that every played at the bar – Lamont Gillispie & 100 Proof. To show their appreciation to local blues fans for many years of support, there will be no cover charge, complementary food and half-priced drinks. A jam will follow the 100 Proof show so bring your axe, your harmonica or your cowbell and join the fun. ZZ Top will be at the Norton Center for the Arts in Danville, KY on Friday, October 24. That same night the legendary NRBQ will perform a rare show at Jim Porter's. G. Miles and the Hitmen bring their high octane show to Stevie Ray's on Saturday, October 25. B.B. King entertainer of the year Janiva Magness will be at the Lyric Theater in Lexington, KY on Monday, October 27. She recently released a new CD of all original material. And on Friday, October 31, Stevie Ray's will host the first Derby City Blues Guitar Showcase. The show will have some of the best guitarists to play in our area including Jason Lockwood, Jimmy Gaetano, John Burgard, Mark Stein, Rob Pickett, Screamin' John Hawkins and more. The show starts at 8:30 pm and admission is $5. The festival season may start to wind down in October but it ends on a high note. The Big Rock Jazz & Blues Festival is Sunday, October 5 in Cherokee Park. This year's performers are Tee Dee Young, Everette Green and Craig Wagner & Friends. The 19th Garvin Gate Blues Festival is Friday and Saturday, October 10 and 11. Since the festival's return in 2007, Howard Rosenberg and Mike Suttles try to top the previous year's show and have a great one planned this year. The headliner's are the Homemade Jamz Blues Band and Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets. Check out the festival ad in this issue of Blues News. The city of Louisville is marking the 100th anniversary of the Belle of Louisville with a Cen-tennial Festival of Riverboats from October 14 through October 19. There will be a variety of music throughout the week and one of the bigger shows in on Friday, October 17. Jimmy Hall, Tanita Gaines and the Bibelhauser Brothers will play on a stage next to Joe's Crab Shack. Check out the festival's website at http://festivalofriverboats.com/.

New Music Reviews! Ray Fuller and the Bluesrockers Live at Buddy Guy’s Legends Azuretone Records

Ray Fuller was given a guitar at age 8, and was inspired by the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, The Animals, then later by John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and Elmore James.

The band was formed in 1978 and opened for great blues bands in the 80s and 90s. They are based in Columbus, Ohio. After touring Europe last year, this CD was recorded live at Leg-ends in Chicago on April 26th 2013, with Buddy Guy present at the show. It was released in April of 2014 and it’s worth buying!

Of the 12 songs on the CD, half are originals by Ray Fuller with him singing and playing slide guitar. My favorites…”Love and Alcohol”, “Bayou Blue”, the slow blues “Feeling Evil”, and “Sallie Mae” with a Bo Did-dley beat. The other six songs, Ray does proud. Elmore James’ “Wild About You Baby”, John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom” and Eddie Clearwater’s “I Wouldn’t Lay My Guitar Down” all had me dancin’!

This is real blues, with Keith Blair (keys), “Manny” Manuel (bass), Mark Ward (drums), Ray Fuller on guitar and vocals and special guest “Doc” Malone of the Big Bill Morganfield band on harmonica.

Carolyn Joyce

RC and the Nightshades Snakebit Altus Records

This CD contains 12 credited songs with a thirteenth uncredited song included on the CD I received. I do not know if all CDs will include the last song or not. I did enjoy the recording a great deal however, I would not necessarily place this CD in the blues category. The songs brought back fond memories of my younger days attending sock hops in the school gym. The CD contains “Riders on the Storm” by the Doors, a couple of Van Morrison tunes, “Since I Fell (For You)” recorded by Lenny Welch and others and Mercy, Mercy, Mercy (which I re-member from the Buckinghams). Even several of the original tunes remind me of songs from

my youth. Only three or four of the songs would be considered as blues songs in my opinion with the thirteenth uncred-ited song being the best of them.

If you are looking for strictly a blues CD I would have to suggest passing on this purchase. But if you are only interest-ed in listening to some enjoyable music I would highly recommend that you sample this recording to see if it is some-thing you would like to add to your collection.

Ray Current

Sean Chambers The Rock House Sessions Blue Heat Records

My last review of a Sean Chambers CD (The Long Island Blues Warehouse Live) mentioned that it was more rock than blues, a la Poppa Chubby or maybe some of Gary Moore’s mu-sic. This is indeed the same person with the same type of offerings. Of the 11 original songs on the CD, I would classify one (“World On Fire”) as blues-rock, one with a blues beat, but a rock guitar (“Just for the Thrill”), one a true, and good, blues song(“It Hurts to See You Go”). The rest are rock songs.

The CD’s name is not from the type of music on it, but rather where it was recorded- the Rock House Studios, of Kevin McKendree. Reese Wynans (of Stevie Ray Vaughn’s band)

produced the CD, and performed on it.

As in my last review of Chambers’ music, rock fans will love it, blues fans will leave it. More info at www.seanchambers.com

Little Mike and the Tornadoes All The Right Moves Elrob Records

I listened several times to this CD before I sat down to write this review. This recording was released in 2014 as a follow up to the 2013 release of their CD entitled “Forgive Me”, which was actually recorded 11 years before its release. The current CD “All The Right Moves” contains 13 straight up Chicago style blues songs. Eleven of the songs were written by frontman and harp player Michael Markowitz. The band’s release sheet and website indi-cates they have performed with many of the blues greats and recorded on several records for the Blind Pig label between 1984 and 1990. While the band has an impressive resume, I

just could not bring myself to placing this CD on my playlist. While the music is technically sound, there was nothing on the CD that caught my attention and made me want to play it over again. Still I did play it several times through and had the same reaction each time. If you really like Chicago style blues you might want to sample this CD on the computer and decide for yourself if it is something you may want to add to your collection.

Carmen Grillo A Different World Big Surprise Music

Grillo, is a Buffalo native now living in Los Angeles who was a guitarist for “Tower of Power” and currently is with the “Sons of Champlin”. He has opened his own recording studio and is a producer and chief engineer. This release is his second although he has recorded/produced/played on a lot of albums since 1979. There are 12 songs on the CD, 9 of which are originals.

Grillo’s music exhibits the jazz background that he has as well as a little funk and blues. The best cut of the CD is Johnny Guitar Watson’s “A Real Mother For Ya” whose guitar and bass will grab you and take you in. A couple of songs are instrumental jazz in the mold of

Neal Shon during his jazz forays. “A Different World” will make you wonder if Jimmy Hall is singing, it is so heartfelt. “Sad State of Affairs” is a good bluesy tune with good lyrics and excellent musicianship. The guitar response/fills are what make the song, although the lyrics are not to be ignored.

The music includes plenty of horns, organ and guitar to please the most ardent blues fan. This is not just blues, but probably more based in jazz and funk. You can check out more at www.carmengrillo.com.

Smokin’ Joe Kubed & Bnois King Road Dog’s Life Delta Groove Productions

With this release, Smokin’ Joe and Bnois (pronounced “ba-noise”) get back to their basics, what they are known for, after the last release of acoustic songs. Any fan that bought their last CD and wondered if they have lost their sound and originality, will be pleased with this release. They still have what us followers of their music have caused us to follow them. The Texas grit and jazzy contributions and vocals by King that they have become known for are still there.

One thing that makes this band interesting is the mixture of the rock influences by Kubek and the Jazz influences by King that ends up in the blues realm. After 25 years and 15 re-

cordings together you would think that the duo’s sound would somehow dilute into one “sound”, but it hasn’t.

Kim Wilson and Randy Chortkoff join the duo to add harp on a couple of the songs, and Kid Anderson adds guitar on one song. Two of the songs are covers- One by George Harrison (“Don’t Bother Me”) and one by the Rolling Stones (“Play With Fire”). You will not recognize either unless you are a serious fan of those bands.

The twelve songs on the CD are all good songs, and being on the Delta Groove Label and with Randy Chortkoff in-volved, it is a fist rate recording.

This CD is what fans of Smokin’ Joe and Bnois have been waiting for since the release of 2010’s “Have Blues Will Trav-el”
