If you can manipulate your photos, please send photos for electronic display that are 2560x1600 pixels with a resolution of 112 ppi. Although large, this will provide an image large enough for all of the different members’ displays. The color gamut should be sRGB and the format JPEG of high quality. This should result in a file about 5 MB or less in size (our previous recommendation). If you do not have the software to manipulate your photos, simply send Janice the JPEG as is.
The photo themes for the January meeting include snow and ice photos, and holiday light photos. These themes are preparatory to January's presentation by Jao van de Lagemaat on dealing with high dynamic range situations. Therefore, please make an effort to find scenes that have very bright and very dark areas. I had previously suggested photos with clipping, but am not suggesting that now. No more than two single photos per person with no photos embedded in photos or diptychs, triptychs….
Dealing with situations with high contrast between light and dark – strategies to optimize exposure, Jao van de Lagemaat
In landscape and outdoor photography one often comes across situations where the bright areas are so bright and the dark areas are so dark that no single exposure seems to capture what you can see with your own eyes. When we look at a scene in real life, such as a the sun setting behind a mountain range, our eyes and brains work together and are able to see detail everywhere. Our cameras however, seem to only see deep dark shadows and the area around the sun becomes a solid white. Our eyes work fundamentally different from camera sensors, making it important to understand those differences and how to deal with them to still get good-looking pictures. In this presentation, I will show how to deal with such situations and how to still come away with spectacular images. I will show some simple strategies on how to optimize your exposure to maximally make use of the camera’s sensor using tools such as raw capture, “expose-to-the-right,” gradient filters, flash, and multiple exposures. Then I will show how to take what you shot in the field and edit in computer so that you get images that actually look like what you saw in the field. My presentation for the January meeting will focus on tools that a lot of people use, such as Lightroom and Photoshop, as you really need nothing more, but I will also discuss some specialized tools for this purpose.
Join us for our meeting on Wednesday, January 14, at 7:00 p.m.

We found out that there was a lot of interest in learning about how to photograph moving water. Since Jao did a presentation on this last year, here is his slideshow as a self-playing video: http://youtu.be/w5JGYSOplkg. Jao has also made a pdf of it available that has all the clickable links:https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/29511771/Moving%20water.pdf. One can use the pdf version to leaf through while playing the Youtube video to see all the useful animations and videos that you can’t see in the pdf.

Making Great Outdoor PhotosSaturdays, May 30 and June 6, 2015
Ever wondered what's the difference between taking a snapshot and making a great photograph—one that makes you go "wow!"? Then this is the class for you.The Photography Section is again offering a basic workshop on outdoor photography—how to make great photographs, and have fun doing it!This class is suitable for any CMC member, with any type of camera, a desire to learn, and a love of the outdoors. What is new for the novice can be a good refresher for the advanced shooter. We will touch on both the art and science (right brain / left brain) of photography, including discussions on composition, light, and point of view, as well as "what does that button do?" on your new camera. While emphasizing basic concepts, this workshop is flexible enough to accommodate all levels of outdoor photographers. Our aim is to have everyone come away with new ideas, questions answered, and great shots. Our first day will begin with a morning session of presentations and discussion. We will then venture out, in the afternoon, for a photo walk in Golden. This will be a good time for equipment checks, resolving any remaining questions, and getting to know one another. Our second Saturday will find us at Red Rocks Park to capture its' beautiful color, magnificent formations, and exciting wildlife. To assure individual attention, enrollment is limited to twenty participants. The cost of the class is $40 for both days (no discount for skipping the field day). Sign up on the CMC website under "classes." Remember: May 30 and June 6 —come join us!.Any questions may be directed to Fred Larke (course director) at [email protected], or to Dan Orcutt (photography section chair) at [email protected].
