Photography and how it is used General conventions of photography in Kerrang! Props: Clothes of the models are black and white to complement the Kerrang! colour theme. Clothing is following a stereotypical rock theme. The lead singer of Biffy Clyro is contrasting to the additional band members as he is wearing a white hoodie rather than a black shirt. Tattoos can be seen on his left hand. Genre: Rock Representations: 12 people are shown in the images and only 2 are women. All are within the Kerrang! target age range of the audience. All are using the direct mode of address Types of framing: 2 smaller images in a Polaroid frame. One smaller image in front of main image. The small image of ‘Funeral for a friend’ draws in the readers attention due to the framing. There is a window in the background which could be that of a pub- are the stars at a friends wake? The use of a detailed background could be a good technique for my indie images. Number of images: 1 main group image and 3 smaller images- 2 group and 1 single.

General conventions of photography in Kerrang!

General conventions of photography in MOJO

Props: Clothes of the stars are black to complement the MOJO colour theme. Clothing is a smart dark coloured jacket with a round necked shirtGenre: RockRepresentations: The target audience is middle-upper class. Focus is the music and not the star appeal. It is for mainly men aged from 30 and over hence the use of an older

male rock star. The contents on the front cover are almost all about different bands which fit perfectly with the music genre (rock). 2 male stars are shown in the images. Both stars are using the direct mode of address and the star in the main image is actually pointing towards the reader.Types of framing: One smaller image in the right hand pug position and the main image. Both are in a sharp focus. The pointing gesture can lead to intrigueby the viewer. The viewer’s eye is drawn in by the gesture. This clever framing technique makes the viewer wonder a little or imagine what is meant by the action and therefore making the image quite effective. I would like to grab the audience’s attention in a similar way in my images.Number of images: 1 main image and 1 smaller image- this is a common convention used in the music magazines. I think that this would be appropriate for my Rhythmix magazine.Variety of shots: mixture of close up and medium close up eye level shots. Both are posed

General conventions of photography in Top of the Pops

Props: Clothes of the stars are trendy and fashionable. They could be found in many high street stores. The clothes denote a young, relaxed and fun feel which add to the sense of fun used in the top of the pops light hearted design and colour theme. Clothing is mostly layered with T shirt and shirtGenre: PopRepresentations: The target audience is young teenage girl. Focus is the star appeal and gossip hence the use of young attractive male pop stars. The stars are

engaging with the reader and nearly all hare smiling or demonstrating a fun attitude. The contents on the front cover are almost all about different bands which fit perfectly with the pop music genre. The main image has a young boy band, One direction, playing around with a supermarket trolley. Types of framing: All shots are posed and lack extra additional detail. This would not be suitable for my older more informed target audience. I would want to give my photos greater context (for example framing a scene with an archway, trees or a building); greater sense of depth or layers (for example putting something in the foreground which adds an extra dimension to the shot). I would also want to ensure that the reader has their eye drawn towards the main focal point and to add intrigue.

Number of images: 1 main image and 6 smaller images which are mostly located on the left hand side for viewing on the magazine rack.Variety of shots: mixture of close up and medium close up eye level shots, all are posed and a variety of single and group images.

General conventions of photography in Spin

Props: Clothes are that of an indie rock star on stageGenre: College oriented rock, Indie, hip hopRepresentations: The target audience are in their twenties and of both genders. Focus is on music. Florence is engaging with the reader and in an almost expressionless facial gesture. The lip colour is of the same red shade and colour as Florence’s hair and beaded accessory. Florence’s costume is black to complement the black text. Her hair is wild and dishevelled

which fits with and indie rock theme. Florence’s style could be described as daring but casual. This fits with Spins reputation as a magazine that was ‘bold and eclectic’. The use of a female could be used to engage with the predominantly male audience. One theory which supports this is from a British theorist called Laura Mulvey (1975) she states that the figure of the woman on a screen or display is seen as the object of desire and "the male gaze." I should use a girl in my main image of my front cover to make sure I encourage a high proportion of male readership.Types of framing: the single shot is posed. Number of images: 1 main image Variety of shots: close up, eye level shots. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laura_Mulvey)

General conventions of photography in Vibe

Props: Clothes, sun glasses, jewellery and accessories are that of an R&B star ready to perform on stage

Page 4: Photography and How It is Used

Genre: Vibe is a music and entertainment magazine founded by producer Quincy Jones. The publication predominantly features R&B and hip-hop music artists, actors and other entertainers. After shutting down production in Summer 2009, Vibe was purchased by the private equity investment fund InterMedia Partners and is now issued every-other month with double covers, with a larger online presence. As of April 2013 Vibe is currently owned by Spin Media. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vibe_(magazine) )Representations: The target audience demographic is predominantly young, urban followers of hip-hop culture. Vibe Magazine was known for the creative direction of their covers. Artists used to engage the audience have been R&B singer Mary J. Blige who has repeatedly made the cover of Vibe, with countless articles following her career. Other famous cover subjects are, Trey Songz, Brandy, Snoop Dogg, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Amerie, Jennifer Lopez, Keyshia Cole, Janet Jackson, Lil Wayne, The Fugees, Eminem, T.I., R. Kelly, Michael Jackson. The front covers are for the most part photographs. The exception to this was an illustration of late singer Aaliyah. Electro-rapper Kesha made Vibe history when she appeared on the cover in October 2012, earning her the honour of being the first caucasian female to appear on the cover as a solo act. Miguel incorporates R&B, funk, hip hop, rock and electronic styles into his music. Miguel described his sound as "nostalgic in a sense that it's familiar... it's shocking, edgy, energizing". Miguel has described his music as "fly, funkadelic, intergalactic-hip-hop-meets-sexy-orgasmic crazy, dope shit". Miguel is often compared to Babyface and Prince. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miguel_(singer)) The photographical representation in this image denotes shock as he sneers at the camera and gestures to the audience. The intertextual link of the sell line links in drugs, sex and R&B to the image.

Number of images: 1 main image of Miguel.

Variety of shots: close up, eye level shot.
