I really have done lots of neat things

since I joined IFPO on April 25, 1990

and enrolled in the press program.

Each season of every year presents an

array of exciting events to be covered.

I admit that living within a couple of

hours drive from Las Vegas may offer

a wider variety of opportunities than

many other areas. However, I believe

that almost anyone anywhere who is

willing to drive two hours could find

equally interesting events to cover.

Each year in January I cover the

Miss America contest in Las Vegas. I

spend several days with the girls to get

to know them behind the scenes before

I shoot the final night spectacular.

After the televised event I go into the

press room with the other members of

the press and former Miss America's

and wait for the new Miss America to

be introduced to us. That's our chance

to meet, interview and photograph her

to capture her beauty, feelings and

emotions -- a truly exciting experi-

ence.

Each February in Las Vegas I cover

NASCAR races on Friday, Saturday,

and Sunday. This is great fun along

with learning lots about racing behind

the scenes and inside the garages and

pits. It is so amazing to learn about

the duties of the crew members and to

hear them explain what goes on. I've

been covering NASCAR in Vegas for

five years.

Each March and April I cover Major

League Baseball spring training. I'm

usually in Vegas covering this as well.

Ever since 1988 I've been involved as

a photographer and have covered 24 of

the 30 teams in the Major Leagues.

It's been a super neat experience to be

involved with professional managers

and players and to hear their stories

throughout the years.

Those are pretty much standard

experiences over each year. In the fall

I have photographed NFL games with

the Oakland Raiders and Minnesota

Vikings. This October I'm hoping to

receive another pass to photograph the

Arizona Cardinals and New Orleans

Saints. This venue will be a new place

where I'll be trying to gain recognition

and build a long term relationship.

I'm renewing my Gold Press Pro-

gram to keep my credentials updated

in order to be accepted at a new venue

as opportunities occur. After you do

this a few times, the prominent press

people know who you are and who

you represent they no longer ask ques-

tions. But you must always be pre-

pared for the next venue where no one

knows you and a new relationship

must be developed. It’s too late to

renew your press card when you are

standing at the press gate unknown by

the person in charge! !

IFPO ... Helped Me Get The Shot!

www.ifpo.net Today's Photographer International 7

By Bryan Huff IFPO, Selmer, Tennessee

IFPO ... Helped Me Get The Shot!

It all started months ago with a

simple basketball contest that

would open the season for the

Memphis Tigers. I was on assignment

with my local newspaper to cover this

event.

As always I made sure to take plenty

of photos for use online and to help

build my Flickr portfolio. A service

such as Flickr is a great tool to show

off your work. That being said there

are certain precautions you should take

before using such a service.

I make sure my images are a maxi-

mum 100 DPI before uploading them

to any site. They look great on screen

but cannot be downloaded for print

because of the low resolution. Also,

watermark your work whenever possi-

ble. If you can’t watermark your

image make sure you at least edit your

metadata, which can be done in Adobe

Bridge or Photoshop. It makes a place

for your contact information and to

protect your copyright.

I wrote up the Tigers story, put the

photos together and turned in the

assignment. Then I proceeded to place

my best extra images into my Flickr

gallery.

About a week later I received an

email from one of the Memphis coach-

ing staff who frequents Flickr looking

for images of the team. He asked me

to return for the university to shoot

their biggest game of the season on

New Years Eve between the Memphis

Tigers and the University of

Tennessee! He had stumbled

onto my images from the key-

words I had used with the

photos during the upload. (Keywords

are extremely important to finding

your images online.)

The New Years Eve game was sold

out in October and over 19,000 fans

would be there.

I was really

excited, but this

was my chance

and I had con-

cern about this

game. I had a

million shots of

jump shots and

lay-ups. I needed

something dif-

ferent this time.

As luck would

have it, I had just

received my first

copy of the

Today’s Photog -

r a p h e r m a g a-

zine. In the mag-

azine were tips

on shooting bas-

ketball, talk

about perfect

timing. I read

them thoroughly

and there I found

the answer to my

problem -- look

beyond the

hoop!

Looking for

drama outside the

basket was a big help and it made me

follow the entire court more thorough-

ly capturing shots I might have other-

wise missed.

The tips were really useful but the

other inspirational stories in the maga-

zine helped to boost my confidence.

The IFPO has given me the tools I

need to further chase my dreams! !

I got in to photography because it

was so amazing how pictures were

made -- the knowledge, skill and intu-

ition combined with magic tricks of

light and shadow to capture the view-

er. Some media that fed my early

ideas of photography were N a t i o n a l

Geographic, Travel Picture Books and

a movie in 1983 called Under Fire

with Nick Nolte, Gene Hackman and

Ed Harris. I was hooked; hopelessly

addicted to the glamour

of photography. As time

went on and I learned

more about what was

required to produce mem-

orable images, I found its mystery,

artistry and power even more addic-

tive.

I have been a photographer since

age 16. I’ve experienced the highs

(producing images for good profit)

and the lows (having all my equip-

ment stolen) of this occupation. I’ve

had my first photography business fail

because I was not prepared and I’ve

had magazines pay me hundreds of

dollars an hour to produce images for

them. But most of all, I’ve been at the

peak of a mountain when the sun and

the clouds come together in that one

elusive, fantastic moment of time; I’ve

been the first person at the lakeshore

when that spectacular golden light

turns the water into liquid bronze.

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING sur-

passes that feeling.

This article is about keeping your-

self afloat when money is tight. I’m

not going to sugar coat this so I might

just as well get it out of the road.

There are more people offering them-Continued on page 14

While shootingthese events I have met many of thebest known sports figures and topnotch sports photographers includingMirco Lazzari in the world.

Paves the Way To the Future

The Universal Press Credentials

issued by IFPO’s AI News Service are

the result of nearly 27 years of research

and development using vital input from

IFPO press photographers. The design

and issuing information meet the strin-

gent requirements of press officials and

law enforcement around the world.

Each time an IFPO Press photograph-

er has successfully covered an event

or appeared at a news site since 1984

he or she has paved the way for those

that follow. Now we have the oppor-

tunity and the responsibility to pave

the way for A I photographers of the

future.

The purpose of the American Interna-

tional News Service (AI) U n i f o r m

Code is to create a lasting visual

impact that matches our current name

recognition. To do that we have to

make sure that all of our AI Correspon-

dent Photographers present exactly the

same u n i f o r m credentials and other

tools for success no matter where they

show up in the world to cover an event.

The purpose is to raise awareness and

create a permanent visual impact.

What is the AI Uniform?

1. The AI Universal Credentials

2. The AI News Service Hat

3. The AI News Service Patch

4. The AI News Service Business

Cards

5. AI email service:

What is the purpose?

1. To improve access for A I C o r r e-

spondent photographers.

2. To forge a visual impact that will

create a lasting impression.

3. To pave the way for future AI Pho-

tographers.

When AI Correspondents arrive in

uniform at all kinds of events all over

the world, only then can the power of

the uniform make its impact to pave

the way for quicker and easier access

today and tomorrow. !

The AI News ServiceUniversal Uniform Code

Every year IFPO tries to launch at least one major program based on what we've

learned from experience and requests from IFPO member photographers working in the

field. The new USPRESSCORPS.ORG Press Program is the latest expansion of IFPO

press programs which were originally launched in 1984. We encouraged and received a

tremendous amount of feedback in the past year which was the basis for the format of the

new USPRESSCORPS.ORG Press Program.

The recurring theme seemd to be that many venues around the

world now require press photographers to show more than one

press card. To meet those requirements and other considerations,

IFPO expanded the press programs to include a new, elite US

Press Corps program which issues a Press Hard Card -- coveted

by most press photographers. USPRESSCORPS.ORG will be permanently limited to

only 1500 experienced IFPO press photographers.

The new USPRESSCORPS.ORG Press Credentials serve 3 purposes:

1) Press hard cards are now issued by most respected media organization and are

expected at most major venues. The photo hard card symbolizes the highest

level of credentials and presents a positive image for the serious press photogra-

pher.

2) Many venues, especially for professional sports, are now asking for at least two

press cards in order to be considered for access to the event. The hard card is

expected to elevate the prestige of the photographer and will certainly epito-

mize the preeminence of the issuing organization.

3) Press hard cards with the photo placed in the manufacturing process are the

most recognized cards for serious photographers. They cannot be duplicated

effectively and, therefore, command respect whenever presented. IFPO now has

the technology to turn almost any photo into a professional head shot for the

production process.

The USPRESSCORPS.ORG program is specifically designed to enhance the stature of

IFPO press photographers and to meet the expectations of press officials and law enforce-

ment internationally. In the near future only press hard cards will be recognized at most

venues.

Qualified IFPO photographers have been notified of their status and invited to join

USPRESSCORPS.ORG. If you have not been notified and believe you qualify, contact

IFPO customer service at 336-945-9867 or email [email protected].

Fact-based, well-documented, unbiased press coverage may be more important today

than almost any time in history. With major newspapers folding monthly and others cut-

ting publishing schedules there is soon going to be vacuum to be filled. Also, the main-

stream media is either left or right leaning and true journalism seems to be in jeopardy.

Since 1984 IFPO Press photographers have covered some of the most high profile

events in the world including the Inauguration of Presidents Barack Obama and George

W. Bush, the Chinese Protest March in Tiananmen Square in 1989, the 1995 bombing of

the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City and the 9/11 Terrorist Attack of the

World Trade Center in New York in 2001. Thousands of sports and entertainment events

and hundreds of other lesser events are covered everyday in the most populated cities of

the world as well as the most remote regions by IFPO press photographers.

The mission of the USPRESSCORPS.ORG is to create a core of 1500 top notch press

photographers to provide comprehensive coverage that is factual and in context directly

to major news outlets for distribution. For more information contact IFPO at 336-945-

9867 or email [email protected]

Bunnies Are Girls’ Best FriendsBarter: I needed a cute little girl to photo-graph with the bunnies my sister raises.

Luckily my neighbor has three girls and sheloves professional pictures of them.

WILL WORK FOR BARTERCONTINUED FROM PAGE 8

selves as photographers now than at

any time since the birth of photogra-

phy. That means the competition is

stiff and it’s going to take effort to

stand out (in a good way) and find

your niche.

I live in a small community of 2500

and I know 8 people marketing them-

selves as professional photographers.

That is a lot of competition in photo-

graphic disciplines such as portraiture,

weddings, child photography, etc. I

happen to be a bit more specialized in

what I do and, though it limits what I

offer the public, I feel I am the best

available for what I do. Luckily, my

clients feel that way as well but I am

not going to be rich any time soon

because small towns have a saturation

point AND the economy is in the tank

right now.

With this in mind, I have begun bar-

tering with people who may not have

the money or who are offering goods

or services that I might need. Not

everyone will be up for this and you

have to be very careful. When I first

started I only bartered with people I

knew or someone I trust would recom-

mend. Once I got my little circle start-

ed, it sort of became a ‘Self-Protecting

Marketing Network’ because we all

need each other. It has also become

something for people who, during this

economy, are having to make choices

about where they spend their money.

For example; Tim the Mechanic

wants family photos but needs his

lawn aerated by Joe’s Landscaping

and he can’t afford both.

The Bartering Answer is: He can

pay Joe to aerate his lawn and offer to

change my oil and tune up my vehicle

in exchange for family pictures or he

can pay me and barter with Joe. Every-

body wins.

Last year I bartered a lot in goods

and services, everything from bushels

of produce to a new lens for my cam-

era. I don’t know if I came

out ahead but I felt pretty

good about breaking even.

So far this year, I’ve bartered

free movies, a gym member-

ship, mechanic work and

have managed to have access

to enough models to keep

my skills sharp through the

slow times.

My base is $50 per hour,

then there are add ons such

as travel, colorizing black and white,

number of ‘group shots’, print pack-

ages, etc. I figure my time, effort and

travel, if needed, to make sure that

everything I pay out of pocket is with-

in the limits of the barter. That limit is

usually, “How much am I willing to

accept in return for my services?”

Some people really struggle with the

concept of not getting money for ser-

vices rendered while others are very

open to it. Personally, I don’t know a

single professional photographer who

has not used barter at one time or

another. The first time I used it was

years ago when I needed some pho-

tographs of people for my portfolio. I

offered persons who posed for me

copies of the shots. That’s a bartered

exchange: something of value is given

or performed for something else of

value.

You do need to decide what your

services are worth. It is also good to

remember that when you offer a ser-

vice, the most flexible part of your

profit margin is your time. You may

never get the total value of your partic-

ular service or you may receive goods

or services that are well beyond what

yours are worth. Just don’t expect it to

even out dollar for dollar. For example

if I offer a Location Family Photo Ses-

sion for $50 with a photo package that

actually costs me $5, that’s not bad

(and don’t forget the residual sales).

Now, if Joe charges $30 to aerate my

lawn and $14 to cut it then that leaves

a $6 difference but I get $44 in ser-

vices for about a $5 expense. Works

for me. Of course I wouldn’t drive 200

miles for such a barter, but 3 or 4

miles are well within my range.

Where to look for these kinds of

people? Well, the obvious answers are

your local paper, mom and pop busi-

nesses like landscapers and childcare

providers, hair stylists, manicurists --

basically any service that you or oth-

ers use. Let’s say you want to get a

booth at the local craft fair to show

your photos. Offer to do family pic-

tures for the people running it instead

of paying the booth fee. Want to go to

the movies more often but can’t afford

it? Offer to shoot pictures for their on-

screen local advertising or at special

movie viewings where people dress up

like their favorite characters. Just

recently, my vehicle needed some

semi-major mechanic work and I was

able to barter the work through pho-

tographs. The most important part of

bartering is to make sure that you do

the same quality of work for a barter

trade as you would for someone pay-

ing you cash. If you can’t do that, this

idea will never work for you.

There is a really awesome book by

Barbara J Winter called Making a Liv -

ing Without a Job. It’s 250 pages of

ways to turn your dreams into profits

and I recommend it not just to photog-

raphers, but anyone who would like to

do what they love to make a living. !

Many times over the years aphotographer has called orwritten to report that his or

her photos have been used withoutpermission, or with permission butwithout payment, photo credit or otherrelated problems. In ninety-nine per-cent of the reports the problems couldhave been avoided by using a coverletter or a simple agreement in writingor using an IFPO Business Form.

The following steps should provideprotection for most situations. 1) Copyrights are inherent to the pho-

tographer. However, an inventorylist of images with the copyrightnotice ( E x : © 2 0 1 0) is a friendlyreminder that the work is protectedby copyright laws. Also a shortnotice such as, “May be reproducedonly with written permission of theauthor” could be added.

2) Each time a photo or digital imageleaves your possession, it should beaccompanied by signed and datedpermission for use with terms andconditions stated. This is the firststep to a contract for use -- even ifno payment is involved. KEEP ACOPY FOR YOUR FILES.

3) Digital images require even moreprotection. NEVER send your origi-nal files. Not even just for someoneto consider. Send a copy of digitalimages in very low resolution alongwith text files of the first two itemsabove.

4) Follow up by phone or email with-in 5-8 business days to see if yourimages arrived and if there is inter-est etc. Mention that completeinformation is in the package.

5) A L W A Y S send a postage paidreturn envelope when submitting by

mail if you expect your work to bereturned.

6) Submissions by email are just “outthere” in an unknown domain. It ismuch safer to mail a disc with yourname and copyright notice on thedisc. We are not suggesting that younever email an image but youshould know and trust the receiverand believe that terms for an agree-ment can be made.

7) Once there is an agreement for animage is to be used, the terms mustbe set before the use occurs. Exam-ple: One photo may be used oncefor $25 or any amount that is satis-factory. You may even want thebenefit of having your photos pub-lished without payment. If so, thatshould be agreed upon up front.

8) Others conditions must also be met. Will you get photo credit? Will youget a copy of the work published? Can you buy extra copies if youneed them?

9) When is payment made? Upon pub-lication? Within 30 days? At theend of the publishing cycle? It real-ly doesn’t matter as long as youunderstand and agree to it.

10) Finally, all terms and conditionsshould be confirmed in writing andsigned by both parties. Sounds like toomuch work? Not so. Two copies of asimple cover letter can do the job for

you. Simple business forms can do thejob for you even better. (See the offerfor a lifetime supply of IFPO BusinessForms on pages 2 and 3 for $39.95)

What happens if you have releasedyour images without an agreement foruse and learn they have been used?Contact the user. Try to work throughthe steps listed here. Most everyoneunderstands that copyright infringe-ment can be serious business. In mostsituations, something fair and equi-table can be negotiated even after pho-tos have been used.

It’s much easier to take the simplesteps required to protect your work atthe time it leaves your possession thanto try to get control of it after use.

Keeping a log of photo packages, digital images etc that are in the handsof potential users helps you trackusage, payments and packages thatshould be returned. It also serves as areminder of where often your bestwork is located and where and whyyou should submit it elsewhere.

Using business forms designedespecially for photographers not onlyhelp protect your work, it’s a short cutto learning about copyrights, rights touse, terms and conditions. Just selectthe form that seems to match your joband complete it! You should neverhave to worry about protecting the useof your photos again. !

IFPO’s Stock Listing ServiceThe following elements clearly distinguish the

differences in the IFPO Stock Listing Service and

a stock agency:

1. The service provided to IFPO members is a

STOCK PHOTO LISTING SERVICE and

NOT an agency.

2. Each photographer manages his own sales.

3. No commissions will be charged ever.

4. Image buyers will browse the IFPO image

bank on the internet, select the photos, get the

price, index number and contact information to

order directly from the photographer who

owns the images.

5. Members may set their own pricing for each

photo sold.

6. Complete copyright standards will be avail-

able at the site for image buyers and IFPO

member photographers (the sellers).

7. Image searches by buyers may be made by

subject.

8. The most important part of any Stock Photo

Service is its indexing system that allows an

image buyer to identify a photo for purchase.

Members are asked to identify their pictures by

their 5 digit member number plus a 5 character

code of their own choosing. Example: IFPO

member 99999 might use Index Codes of

99999-KID01, 99999-KID02, etc.

ADVANTAGES OF THE

IFPO STOCK GALLERY SERVICE

w w w . i f p o . n e t / s t o c k . h t m l• List only the number of quality images

you wish to list -- not 10,000 to 50,000 asrequired by agencies.

• You can add fresh images at your conve-nience. No minimums are required -- suchas the 1000 new images per year by manyagencies.

• There are no contracts, exclusive oro t h e r w i s e -- to tie up your images foryears as with an agency.

• The price you set is what you get - -could never happen with an agency.

• There are no commissions ever -- unlikeagencies who always take at least 50 per-cent of sales.

• Income from sales is instant and allyours -- very different from agencieswhere payment usually follow sales by 6 to8 months.

• Model and other applicable releases arerequired for stock images listed with IFPO-- the same as with an agency.

• Current and new clients can see yourfresh images instantly and contact you tobuy -- which could never happen with astock agency.

• The more images you list with the IFPOPicture Listing Service the more likely youare to make money -- which is the same aswith an agency.

• The more SUBJECTS you list with theIFPO Picture Listing Service, the morelikely you are to make money over the longhaul -- which is also true with an agency.

SELL PHOTOS YOU ALREADY HAVE!

Successful stock libraries contain HIGH QUALITY images of everyday life situations. IFPO members shoot such images everyday as a matter of

course. However, unless a photographer has hundreds or thousands of images, he may be shunned by the large stock houses. This could happen for two

reasons, he simply may not be recognized as a successful stock photographer or his stock of a few dozen images is too small for an agency to consider.

The IFPO Stock Listing service removes these barriers totally and opens doors to the international sales market.

Three years ago to celebrate

the 25th Anniversary of

IFPO many things were con-

sidered. The intent was to commemo-

rate our first 25 years in a way to

honor the contributions of the mem-

bers who had been the driving force

and heart of the organization. After

long deliberation it was determined to

induct those still active charter mem-

bers and other deserving members into

a permanent Freelance Photographer’s

Hall of Fame and to award each an

Honorary Degree of Distinction.

When the International Freelance

Photographers Organization (IFPO)

was founded in 1983, no one could

have possibly foreseen 25 to 30 years

into the future. Now, twenty-eight

years later, the original mission of

IFPO -- to be the primary source of

support for the universe of freelance

photographers -- has stood the test of

time and has surely grown beyond the

wildest imaginations of the original

founders.

IFPO’s first member was actually

enrolled on January 9, 1984. From

that day forward IFPO evolved into a

member driven organization. That

simply means that members asked for

services and support and IFPO

responded with research and develop-

ment. That process evolved over the

years to make IFPO what it is today,

the longest continuing central source

of support for freelance photographers

around the world.

Fortunately, it was easy to identify

the original Hall of Fame candidates.

Since day one IFPO has maintained a

transactional data base that records

every single activity of each IFPO

member. That includes program par-

ticipation, editorial submissions, press

assignments, photo contest entrants

and other information such as pub-

lishing credits, internet home pages

URLs and more. Many members

have shared their success stories out-

side IFPO which is also noted in our

membership records. The original

process pinpointed 3319 IFPO mem-

bers (out of 78,656) to be permanently

inducted into the IFPO Hall of Fame.

The first Hall of Fame IFPO mem-

bers were inducted on January 2,

2008. Each one was notified by letter

or e-mail. If you were not notified, but

believe you may qualify, you may

check to see if your name is listed as a

Hall of Fame member at

www.ifpo.net/halloffame. Enter your

member number plus the first 3 char-

acters of your last name (8 characters

total). If you were inducted your name

will appear on the list.

There is a chance that there are

deserving Hall of Fame Members that

we were not able to identify from our

extensive records and other research

who should be honored. If you did not

receive notification of your induction

and feel that you should be considered,

please call 336-945-9867 to update

your records and discuss your poten-

tial.

To further honor and recognize the

Freelance Photographers Hall of Fame

members, IFPO created a unique,

definitive Hall of Fame Portfolio

exclusively designed to share the Hon-

orary Degree of Distinction with

clients and the most discerning friends

and family. Each item in the portfolio

is graced with the distinctive IFPO

Hall of Fame Logo.

The portfolio includes 1 IFPO Hall

of Fame Lapel Pin of silver inlaid into

a field of black, 1 IFPO Hall of Fame

Honorary Degree of Distinction Diplo-

ma and Charter in a Leatherette Pre-

sentation Case plus 1 IFPO Hall of

Fame Member Passport distinctly

marked.

The Freelance Photographer’s Hall

of Fame will be permanently located

on the IFPO internet site. Each Hall of

Fame member’s record will be also

marked permanently. But it is the Hall

of Fame Portfolio -- The Lapel Pin,

Honorary Degree of Distinction Diplo-

ma, Charter and Passport ... that con-

vey the prestige of being inducted into

the IFPO Freelance Photographer’s

Hall of Fame.

Congratulations to each of you. It

was your lasting interest and ceaseless

suggestions that drove an organization

from its infancy in 1983 to more than

80,000 members strong with interna-

tional recognition in 2008 ... and still

growning.

With your continued interest and

that of others who follow in your foot-

steps, the IFPO Hall of Fame will con-

tinue to review members’ qualifica-

tions and induct even more members

in the next twenty-five years. !

IFPO JUMP STARTED MY CAREER

By Luis Blanco IFPO, Hialeah, FL

My career in photography

has grown rapidly since I

joined IFPO in April 2010.

In the first 4 months I

covered more than a dozen

high profile entertainment

and sporting events. You

don't know how grateful I

am for this surprising

opportunity.

I expected it to be diffi-

cult to be accepted as a

press photographer, and it

certainly is sometimes, but I

succeed most times. It is a

pleasure for me to represent

Today's Photographer mag-

azine. My sincere thanks go

to the editorial staff. I really

appreciate their back up and

support.

My message to IFPO and

Today’s Photographer

magazine is please remem-

ber if any time you need

anything for the magazine

or for IFPO, in general, just

let me know. Thanks to

your help my career as pho-

tographer is growing fast.

Again I am here for you I

How many times have you read or heardsuch a claim? Can it possibly be true? Theanswer is yes. But before you spend the sixdigit income you expect to receive fromyour next shoot, let’s understand how itcan happen.

An image which has the power to stop

the eye and evoke a response from a broad

base of viewers can be sold many times

year after year. If you sold the “rights to

use” one image 25 times at an average sale

price of $131.00 over a few years you

could truly earn $3,275. Sales prices vary

according to use. You may command $900

for one use and only get $50 for the next

one -- but it’s all money and contributes to

long term income.

How would you like to have a dozen or

so “workhorse” images working for you

now or in retirement? It can happen if you

understand who buys, why photos sell,

which ones sell again and again and how to

sell yours.

Who buys photos?

Nearly everyone who uses them on a

regular basis! Advertising agencies, news-

papers, magazines, trade journals, corpora-

tions, publishers, the travel industry and

paper products companies are all huge

buyers of photography. There are countless

others. So the problem is not locating buy-

ers; it is finding the right buyer for your

work.

The first step is to learn who buys pho-

tos, and from whom. Some publications

buy only from stock photo agencies. More

recently many buy directly from photogra-

phers using the internet to locate them.

Others merely contract photographers and

assign the project. Don’t disregard these,

contract work can be very profitable.

However, when establishing a market for

your photos, you may have to target small-

er, less frequent publishers, who often

publish photos submitted by outside pho-

tographers. Editors and other users will not

usually approach you to see your work. In

order to get your work in front of them,

you must make submissions!

Why do photos sell?

A picture is worth a thousand words.

That adage is not in jest. To succeed every

advertiser, must have a way to stop the

reader or viewer. Photographs that com-

mand the viewer to take a second look are

proven “eye stoppers.” Those are the ones

an advertiser will buy and use to capture

the viewers’ attention long enough to get

an additional message in front of them.

You can enhance your chance for sales

substantially by offering images with space

for titles, headlines, logos or other infor-

mation.

Countless type of photos are eye stop -

p e r s , but two distinct types can be

described. One is a powerful, simple,

straight forward image. The attention get-

ting element could be lighting or a strong

color, a dramatic subject, setting or an

unusual style. Its technical or creative

excellence may simply be overpowering or

it could be a totally different view of an

old, familiar scene. The most commonly

used straight forward image is a human

face making direct eye contact with the

viewer.

The other type is more low key. It allows

the reader/viewer’s mind to run freely, to

get involved and to create or imagine his

own story. It has the power to uplift or

soothe one’s spirits. It could provide a nat-

ural, neutral, resting place such as a sunny

meadow to get lost and dream (and there-

fore digest the advertiser’s message). One

could argue vehemently that either type is

better. What is best is the one that works --

for the advertiser, the client, the publisher

and the photographer!

Photos already in existence (stock pho-

tos) often sell because it is more economi-

cal for the user than assigning a photogra-

pher to do a project. Even if the user pays

$500 for a one time use? Yes. Assigned

photography can range from $350 to $1000

or more per day! Even at those prices the

client may not get satisfactory results but

must pay the bill anyway.

Convenience, choice and quality are also

factors. The buyer can review dozens of

stock images, choose the photos he may

wish to buy and inspect the reproduction

quality of each one right on the spot. He

only pays for the ones he buys.

Another value of the review process is

finding the surprise image -- the one that

pops up (beyond anything he originally

had in mind) and zaps him into buying!

Such images, which are usually a one of a

kind shot, simply cannot be assigned. Fre-

quent buyers know that -- another reason

why they love to peruse stock photos

rather than make the assignment!

Which photos sell best?

The sharp ones that are seen most often

by potential buyers! How do you get one

image in front of fifty buyers in one life-

time? Duplicate it and then make fifty sub-

missions! Better yet, put it on the internet

where it may attract hundreds of buyers in

a lifetime. It may not be quite that simple

but that’s the general scheme of things if

you intend to make multiple sales of the

same image in a reasonable period of time.

How do you select an image to promote?

A good place to start is with one that has

already sold once. Why shouldn’t it sell

again? If you’ve never sold your work, a

quick review of six reasons why photos

sell may be helpful to you.

• The image that catches the eye of the

viewer to create a mood or evoke a feel-

ing long enough to communicate a mes-

sage through a few words of text.

BLURRING MOTION FOR THE RIGHT EFFECT

By Chris Kesler IPFO, Beaver, Utah

I am from the Old School of Photog-

raphy and have just recently made the

switch to digital. I now spend the

majority of my time finding out how

much of my hard-earned knowledge

will transfer over to this new medium.

I know that there are digital manipula-

tion programs and plug-ins that will do

these things for you, but I prefer to do

the majority of my processing in-cam-

era and I think there are others out

there who feel the same.

The importance of a subject being

in-focus and tack sharp cannot be

over-stated…..unless you are trying

for a specific effect. I am a sharpness

addict because you will rarely find me

without a monopod at sporting events

and I enjoy the company of my tripod

better than most of my friends.

I set the shot (pictured) up just as if I

were preparing to make an image of

moving water in a river or stream.

Shooting in AV mode, I selected an

aperture of f/11.0 because I knew any-

thing smaller would make the expo-

sure too long. Too much

movement is just a blurry

mess so I settled for a

Shutter Speed of 0.8/sec.

ISO was set at 100 and

yes, my camera was

mounted on a sturdy tri-

pod.

As you can see, the

movement of the fly-line

(the light green line run-

ning from fisherman to

fish) and fly-rod is quite

dramatic. Also, you will

see a silver shadow above the splash-

ing water. That is where the fish

reached its apex at the height of its

jump. Also, notice the sharpness of the

foreground and far bank in contrast.

Having learned how to fulfill the

need to freeze action, I understood

what would happen if that was not

what I was intending to do. There is a

big difference between intending to do

something and accidentally stumbling

over it and that is why, when you love

photography as much as I do, you are

always learning. That way I can

choose when to break the rules instead

of leaving it to some random bit of

chance. !

I have been associated with IFPO

for the past 23 years and have been

published in Today’s Photographer

Magazine more times than I can count.

I got hooked on getting published

when I was working on a yearbook in

high school.

However, it

was several

years later

that I reached

the f r e q u e n t l y

p u b l i s h e d s t a-

tus.

I worked on

the high

school year

book as a

p h o t o g r a p h e r

and shot pic-

tures with a

K o d a k

B r o w n i e .

Back then

c o m p u t e r s

were non-

existent so

there was no

M i c r o s o f t

p u b l i s h e r ,

e v e r y t h i n g

was cut and

paste by hand.

We were

using percola-

tors to make

coffee and no

one knew

what a

m i c r o w a v e

was.

Many IFPO members have similar

backgrounds and stories. Nevertheless

because of the support and credibility

of IFPO many of us now share similar

success stories. I have met some very

high profile and amazing people while

on assignment for Today’s Photogra -

pher Magazine. (How many times

have you read a similar claim on these

pages?)

I have been able to interview, shoot

pictures (and get some of them pub-

lished) of such well known people as

Mayor Berkeley of Kansas City, Miss

USA International, Miss Physical Fit-

ness, Miss Missouri, Miss Kansas,

Miss Hawaiian Tropics, Box Car

Willie and Chubby Checkers. I also

met and photographed Sara, The Only

Woman Tiger Trainer In The World,

who was employed by Ringling Broth-

ers Circus. At that time I owned Fash-

ion Point Model Consulting and Pho-

tography Studio located in North

Kansas City.

I became a glamour photographer

out of necessity, not by choice. I use to

paint show cars and motorcycles. Then

I would take pictures of each vehicle

as soon as I finished. In an attempt to

get published, I sent those pictures to

various trade magazines only to get

rejected over and over.

I was about ready to give up when I

decided to call one of the magazines

and ask why I couldn’t get published.

As luck would have it I was able to

speak to the editor. She hesitated for a

moment and then remembered seeing

my work. I asked why I couldn’t get

published. She asked me if I knew

what was on the cover of their maga-

zine. I said a motorcycle. She said,

“What else?” I thought for a moment

and then remembered -- a model. She

said I was not using models. This actu-

ally upset me because I had spent over

a month stripping this motorcycle, fix-

ing dents, priming, sealing, base coat-

ing, putting metal flake on it, top coat-

ing and finally spending several hours

rubbing it out. I then spent a lot of

time doing the photography. That is absolutely crazy! I need a

model to get a motorcycle published? She said when men from 15 to 50 passby or go to a newsstand, the model onthe covers gets their attention and theybuy the magazines. Then they takethem home to read how big the motoris and what color of paint it has on it,etc. In print advertising as well as tele-vision commercials, models drawmore attention to the advertisementthan text or even the spoken worddoes. Pictures are used to get the atten-tion of the public, and the verbal orwritten word is used to make the sale. It’s the prime law in advertising.

Q: Does getting your photos published really help?

A: YES ... in more ways than you can imagine.

GETTING PUBLISHED

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 31

I knew absolutely nothing about

shooting or working with models

when I started. I really wanted to

shoot motorcycles and get them pub-

lished. After working with various

modeling agencies and schools, adver-

tising agencies and hundreds of mod-

els I finally became a Model Consul-

tant for IFMO which is now the IFPO

New Discoveries program. The two

things that I credit the most for my

success in the wonderful world of

modeling and photography are IFPO /

IFMO.

I was first published on the cover of

Today’s Photographer Magazine

(when it was still titled I n t e r n a t i o n a l

P h o t o g r a p h e r) in 1988. That was a

photo of me shooting models in my

studio leading to a feature story of

how to find and shoot models. (Note:

the models got me published.) From

that day forward, I have used models

to illustrate my articles even when I

test equipment. I have lost count of

the number of times I have been pub-

lished on the cover or inside Today’s

P h o t o g r a p h e r magazine but every

article featured models.

I am not proposing that every pho-

tographer has to shoot models to get

published. Turn the pages in this issue

and you will see that a wide variety of

pictures are published. I shoot models

and use their pictures to illustrate my

stories because it works for me and it

is widely known that models capture

the imagination of the viewer.

There are constant discussions

going on lately about the economy

and the fact that professional photog-

raphers are a dying breed because of

the digital format. The truth is, most

non-professionals do not have a

DSLR, studio lights, extensive pho-

tography knowledge or expertise in

composition so there is still a big, big

market out there especially in the pub-

lishing world for experienced photog-

raphers.

The general public will go to pho-

tographers working in either format

for family pictures, school and sports

team photos, senior pictures, prom

photos and wedding pictures.

The biggest market for digital for-

mat is the internet which has opened

up vast opportunities for photogra-

phers at almost any level. Internet dat-

ing is at an all time high and everyone

who posts a photo on one of those

sites needs good quality, flattering

photos -- not from a point and shoot

camera. Internet advertising is huge

and requires extraordinary product

photography. The list is endless.

There are publishing opportunities

in almost any category of photography

including children, pets, models, head

shots for business and entertainment,

recitals of dance and gymnastics, sea-

sonal activities such as kids with

Santa. Little league photos are big

business and often lead to publication

or experience shooting high school

and college sports.

You and only you can take the ini-

tiative to get published, make money

with your camera and make your

dream come true. For your conve-

nience Today’s Photographer M a g a-

zine is now being published on line so

if you have a computer you can

instantly view your articles and pic-

ture the minute they are published.

Access to events you normally can-

not get into on your own is also key to

getting published. IFPO photogra-

phers using press credentials issued by

Today’s Photographer magazine have

covered all kinds of events around the

world in the last 27 years and gotten

their work published extensively in

many publications.

The benefits of getting published in

any format are far reaching. It gets

you recognition, which impresses

clients and attracts new ones. It is a

confirmation that you do quality work

and can command the prices for it. At

another level in my situation, it

attracts models who want to get pub-

lished for all the same reasons.

Beyond the dollar value, getting pub-

lished establishes your credibility and

attracts other publishers. In my opin-

ion, it is the single most important

thing a photographer can do to launch

a solid career in photography. !

2009 WINNERS & HONORABLE MENTIONS

P H OTO CONTEST UPDAT EToday’s Photographer magazine has

suspended the monthly photo contest

which has been in operation since

1988. The transition from film to digi-

tal format has complicated the process

for submission and judging contest

entries.

Digital submissions require careful,

time consuming downloading, filing,

storage and retrieval unlike actual

prints or slides which can be stored in

bins until judged. Our editorial staff is

too small for someone to handle photo

contest digital submissions daily.

Judging digital submissions is also

more complex because of the equip-

ment required to see several entries at

the same time for comparision -- again

unlike prints or slides which can easily

be displayed to compare. Judging is a

process of elimination. Viewing all

entries in a category allows the

removal of weaker works and permits

the stronger works to survive to the

next round to be eliminated or win

again. The last survivor is the winner.

Viewing a digital image on a screen

versus a high quality print in hand is a

very uneven process and seems

unequal somehow.

Entries in the last year or two have

dwindled down to a very few photog-

raphers who still send high quality

prints for the contest. While their

entries are mostly excellent, there is

very little competition and variety of

work or styles in the submissions.

The editorial staff reluctantly

requested the suspension out of fair-

ness for all formats. Until a process is

established that does not require

tedious attention, photo contest entries

will not be accepted after the closing

of the December 2010 entry deadline. !

36 Today's Photographer International www.ifpo.net

I focus on nature rather than human

images. I have been asked and urged to

photograph weddings ... good money or

not -- I had rather not get into that!!

Shots ... yes, these are the types I have

had published and I literally have thou-

sands more of equal quality.

Nature photography is rewarding for

numerous reasons. The work environ-

ment is perfect! The images are time-

less! They never become outdated for

publication, always have sales appeal

and everyone loves them. Also, the

shot that has been published or sold

once is the one most

likely to sell or be pub-

lished again. News

photos, including

sports and entertain-

ment, have a very

short life before they

become outdated.

The flowers, cats

and the puppy shot,

It’s Never Too Early

To Panic, will be just

as appealing and valu-

able in 5 to 10 years as

they are now. An

inventory of excellent

nature images can

work for you again and

again -- even into

retirement. !

IFPO members who have been

active for more than 10 years or have

been published 5 or more times are

qualified to participate in the IFPO

Master Photographer Platinum Portfo-

lio Program. Others who can offer dif-

ferent validating criteria may also

apply. In a 2007 landmark move,

IFPO responded to member sugges-

tions to completely revise and update

the Master Photographer Program

which was first unveiled in 2001.

The distinguished Master Logo

appears throughout the credentials

along with universal issuing informa-

tion which is extremely valuable when

credentials are being scrutinized for

every piece of validating information.

• Universal appeal also sells a photo, i.e.

it must be easily recognized and of

interest to a large market of viewers.

The photograph must be flexible in its

intent. The more buyers that are able to

use the same image, the better chance

for sales. A photo of a child has univer-

sal appeal.

• Photos of exotic places will always be

popular. However, there is also a great

supply of these “travel” photos, so you

must be able to present an original, fresh

view of those standard locations.

• Photos should be versatile and timeless

in their use for long term sales potential.

Clouds, sunrises, sunsets, snow scenes,

ocean waves and beaches, mountains,

deserts, autumn leaves and spring flow-

ers are all timeless images and usually

evoke a feeling from the viewer.

• Timely photos can also sell well (this is

not a contradiction) but probably not as

often as the timeless ones. An example

would be a breaking news event such as

a plane crash, the bombing of Pearl Har-

bor or a political event. Most timely

photos have a shorter use life except for

documentary purposes.

• People pictures sell more often than any

other subject. Models are used to sell

virtually every product or service on the

market today.

Suppose you do not use models and only

photograph your family? Sell the family

album! Not quite, but keep in mind that

cute kids sell everything from cereal to

tires. Trendy families advertise lifestyle

products from suntan lotion to walking

shoes. Grandparents on bicycles,

boats and planes illustrate the ben-

efits of investment, travel, vitamin

pills and hundreds of other prod-

ucts! One could go on and on.

Will your photos sell?

A serious intent to sell requires

selecting your best photos, identi-

fying your specialty and matching

that specialty with the right buy-

ers. Your first step is to organize

and edit. In this process you must

select only the photos that are

technically excellent. Then edit

again -- this time using the same

criteria that a buyer might use.

Why is a certain image special?

Will it catch the eye of a viewer?

Will it reproduce well in color? In

black and white? You will discard

more of your work. At this point

you should be very encouraged if

some images have survived.

As a beginning freelancer you

may have a way to go before you will be

considered among top photographers. If

you must compare quality, do so with the

smaller trade papers and lower circulation

magazines where you will find some excel-

lent pictures.

To sell requires a lot of common sense,

complete objectivity and a practical filing

system. Without these, your ability to suc-

ceed is at best doubtful.

A practical filing system is imperative. It

can be a simple notebook, card, or comput-

er file. You must develop and structure

your files so you can locate or find the sta-

tus of all your sellable work instantly.

Time is money. If you can’t locate an

image quickly, you will lose sales.

Organize your files by subject matter,

i.e. all sports together etc. Label each

image with your name, copyright symbol,

date and an inventory number. Use the

inventory number to cross reference cap-

tions in another file. All works must be

captioned fully. The caption may never be

used, but without it you lose the details of

an image thus losing its market potential.

Signed model and property releases are

absolutely necessary and must be retriev-

able.

Protecting your rights is up to you. Make

sure you understand the rights you are sell-

ing and put it in writing. Never release a

photo without an agreement and make sure

you understand it!

Keep an accurate, updated list of photos

that have been sold. Include the date sold,

price, rights given, and name of buyer.

The image that just sold is your hottest

prospect to sell again. With a filing system

you are always ready to submit your

hottest photos for other sales.

Match your specialty to a market. F o r

example a photographer may take great

pictures of automobiles. Then he discovers

that there over 100 magazines focused on

the automotive industry. Automobiles

become his specialty. He wisely concen-

trates his business efforts toward markets

which have a demand for his specialty.

Smart photographer!

Set attainable goals. The more you are

published, even in smaller publications, the

more credibility you have and the greater

your chances of attracting bigger and better

paying buyers.

Be prepared for rejections as well as

successes. That is a part of the business.

Remember there is a strong demand for all

kinds of images -- even yours.

Persistence is the key. Continually intro-

duce yourself to prospective buyers and

remind them that you are able to provide

high quality photographs that they need.

Stay active. Commit more of your shoot-

ing time to your specialty to increase the

number of exceptionally high quality

images you will have to offer. Search for a

broader range of buyers. This will become

the basis for your success in photo sales.

Remember a good photograph communi-

cates a message even without text. Com-

pare your photos often with other pub-

lished works ... but don’t be too hard on

yourself. Re-examine your files frequent-

ly. You never know when you will find a

strong message hiding there! !

YOU CAN BE AN

THE ADVANTAGEAn IFPO Distributorship is an exceptional

opportunity for IFPO members to achieve suc-cess and make money by taking advantage of the

millions of dollars and 15 years of research thathave gone into developing the IFPO / Today's

Photographer Magazine Concept. The modest

distributor's fee gives you the value of MIL-LIONS of dollars that have been invested in 15

years of advertising IFPO’s dependability, quali-ty and services.

Today's Photographer Magazine and its asso-

ciated products gets more exposure than anyother photography magazine. It is advertised reg-

ularly in display space advertising in PopularPhotography, Photographic, Outdoor Photogra-

pher, American Photographer and Shutterbug. Asa distributor, you get the direct benefit of this

advertising.

Today's Photographer is sold on Newsstandsthroughout the United States, Canada, and

around the world.IFPO is recognized in more than 140 coun-

tries on all continents of the world and has more

than 67,000 members. Today's PhotographerMagazine is currently being distributed to more

than 80,000 photography enthusiasts 4 times ayear.

Typically, distributorships or franchises thatgive a distributor this kind of exposure, promo-

tion and value are priced from $10,000.00 to

$150,000.00.

YOU CAN:•You can start a new business and coast in thewake of the IFPO flagship. Let its research, product development, name recognition and dol-lars spent on advertising make money for you.Let IFPO's rapid success plan turn into financialgrowth for you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

http://www.ifpo.net/dfaq

HOW IT WORKS1. DISTRIBUTOR DISCOUNT: You are enti-tled to order products and services from a cur-rent issue of Today's Photographer at a only50% of the listed standard price. For example:multiply list prices by 0.5 (a $68 membershipwould be $34.00). Half of $39.95 for example, would be $19.98 (rounded off to the nearestcent).

2. QUANTITIES AND SHIPMENTS: Order inany quantity. IFPO will ship to you or your cus-tomer direct. No minimums or quotas.

3. EXCLUSIONS: You CANNOT apply yourdistributor's discount to: USA or Foreign ship-ping • Workshop programs • Quantity discountpackages such as 3R0X, 3VVX, item numberscontaining “X”, or special offers with expirationdates • Classified and display a dvertising •Items in out-of-date issues may no longer bevalid • Items not sold by IFPO/American Imageare excluded. Items not sold in Today’s Photog-rapher magazine are excluded.

WHY YOU?•You may wish to purchase many IFPO pro-grams or services for yourself. A distributorshipwill save you 50%.

•You may be associated with a group such as acamera club, family members or close associateswho may want to participate in IFPO productsand services at discount prices.

•If you have a photography studio or similarbusiness may wish to arm all of your staff mem-bers with memberships and press program cre-dentials from IFPO to make them more competi-tive. An IFPO Distributorship would enablethem to do this at reduced costs to the studio orcompany.

•You may want to start down the road of beingyour own boss with an IFPO distributorship. Youcan start small, order in any quantities, part timeor full time. Most of all, you may have a fewhours a week to invest in your financial future.

MAKE MONEY:•A distributor could sell only 2 videos a weekand net up to $2000.00 a year. He could buildhis business up to 200 videos a week and bepulling in potentially $200,000.00 per year.

•A distributor could set up a network of 100Model Consultants "talent scouts" in an area.He would make nearly $15,000 just on themodel consultant kits and IFPO memberships, then would make more on the videos, forms, books and other items that consultants frequent-ly buy.

•A distributor could sell to schools and educa-tional institutions. IFPO's instructional videosare very popular with schools of all kinds(Junior Highs, High Schools, Colleges, TradeSchools, etc.). Schools typically purchase inlarger quantities, often 10 to 20 videos at a time.Currently, about 100 schools are purchasingfrom IFPO. There are tens of thousands more inthis country alone.

•Recreational groups sponsored by governmentor other non-profit groups. For example, Mili-tary bases have recreational programs thatinclude self-help and how-to programs on video.Currently, IFPO does a brisk business with mili-tary base purchase orders from only a few bases.

•Many other groups sponsor recreational pro-grams that would be very interested in photogra-phy instructional videos. Groups plan trips.Vacationers use cameras and camcorders.

•Photographer's swap meets or flee markets areideal places to set a booth and market IFPOproducts. In these situations, having merchan-dise to sell (like videos) is a plus. But if youdon't have the merchandise, be sure to get thename, address, and phone number of each per-son that stops by your booth. Each one is a

prospective customer for the future. If you runout of copies of Today's Photographer at yourbooth, you can always mail them one in thefuture with a special offer flyer of some kind.

REPEAT CUSTOMERSThe best opportunity you have to make

money as a distributor is to give your customersa REASON to do business with you. You canuse your own liberal distributor discount to youradvantage. If you can give your customers a 5or 10% discount by purchasing through you, then they have a reason to order with youinstead of ordering directly through mail orderwith IFPO. Your own margins may be a littleslimmer, but your volume would be much high-er.

Now you could consider distributingToday's Photographer Magazines liberally withyour business card attached and a notice thatoffers your own 5% or 10% discount if theyorder through you.

In this way, you would get the full advan-tage of repeat orders from the same customers.

Here is a sample list of schools and institutionsthat have already placed large orders directlywith IFPO:

AFETA, Camp Peary, VA; Miami Killian

Senior High School, Miami, FL; Leon County Schools,

FL; River East School Division, Winnipeg, Manitoba,

Canada; Aims Community College, Greeley, CO; CBN

University Library, Virginia Beach, VA; Southwest

The List Price of the IFPO Distributor Program is $1,490. For a limited time, the price is reduced to $387 but will only remainat that special price until our current Distributor Enrollment program has met it’s goals.

For the last 3 years I have covered the Dutch RoyalFamily on Queen’s Day while on assignment for AI NewsService. This year was a very happy event compared to

2009 when the Royal Family was threatened by anangry motorist who tried to run them down with amotor vehicle -- killing several bystanders.

Queen's Day, or Koninginnedag as we call it, isa national holiday in the Netherlands. On this dayApril 30 every year we celebrate the birthday ofHer Majesty Queen Beatrix although it's really thebirthday of her mother Queen Juliana. QueenBeatrix’s birthday is on 31st of January when it istoo cold to celebrate. Winter in the Netherlandsisn't the time to party outside.

The Queen’s address to Parliament is the high-light of Queens Day. However, the parade route ofthe Royal Family going to and from the Parlia-ment Chambers attracts most of the people on thestreet. With few exceptions it is a joyous day.!

A press photographer’s reputation is often based on his own codeof ethics. Although getting the story is the ultimate goal, ethical stan-dards can “make or break” a career. As a press photographer, it isyour duty to document newsworthy happenings — never altering cir-cumstances or interfering with action to enhance your photographs.Your photos should tell a story just as it happened. Meeting the highstandards of good press photography requires patience, determina-tion and a strong set of ethics which can be the difference betweensuccess and failure.

First, foremost and always remember that Press access is a privi-lege not to be abused. Use the following Code of Ethics to guideyou:

• Arrive early — at least 45 minutes to an hour before the event isscheduled to begin — in order to check in, find the press area, checkout the stage or facility lay-out and choose a vantage point.

• Never show up for an event unprepared. Not only should you have allthe proper equipment, you should have a basic knowledge and under-standing of the event. Do your homework!

• Try to work with promoters and authorized officials rather than againstthem.

• Conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times. Photographerswho complain or cause problems aren’t likely to be admitted again.

• Don’t just start shooting. Take time to think about what you’re covering.

• Stay within the boundaries of the photographers’ area. Never interferewith the action, criticize a player or performer or interrupt an authorizedofficial.

• Have patience. Resist the urge to inconvenience other photographersby changing spots. Your opportunity will come.

• Although it can be necessary to fight for a good position, always becourteous. You’ll find other photographers are usually willing to sharetheir space -- if you offer them the same courtesy. Try your best to getalong with other members of the press.

• Always live up to your obligations to promoters and publications.

• If you agree not to sell the photos commercially, DO NOT break thisagreement.

• Always clean up after yourself -- film wrappers, etc.

• Never photograph anyone in a compromising situation (backstage, locker rooms) unless it’s a public figure in a public place which qualifiesfor news. Don’t abuse the privileges you have been granted.

• Always remember you are a photographer on the job -- not a spectator.

Finally, the nature of breaking news makes preparation impossi-ble. However, when you arrive on the scene, you are a press pho-tographer -- expected to live up to the same ethical standards youhave learned to display at scheduled media events. With practiceand common sense, high ethical standards should some as natural-ly as pressing the shutter. !

The American Image Press Photographer’s Code of Ethics

As a freelance professional photograph-

er it was a dream come true when I was

invited to the Reunion of the Old Guard in

Washington, D.C. in the fall of 2010.

The Old Guard is the oldest active

infantry unit in the U. S. Army, even older

than the Constitution. It was created in

1784 and served its first thirty years as the

First American Regiment, the seedling of

the United States Army.

The Old Guard assumed guardianship of

the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at

Arlington Cemetery in 1948 and continues

that honor guard today. The laying of the

wreath and the changing of the guard cer-

emony is beyond imagination. The twenty-

one steps before the Tomb that the guard

must walk, the perfect handling and

inspection of the rifle, the precision of his

perfect and precise turn and the crispness

and beauty of his impeccable uniform is

beyond impressive.

The 3rd U. S. Infantry

Regiment (The Old Guard)

is based at Ft. Myer, Virginia where the

troops who conduct the ceremonies are

trained. Ft. Myer is also home to the beau-

tiful horses who pull the caisson which

carries the casket of a dignitary or a Presi-

dent to be buried at Arlington Nation

Cemetery.

The Old Guard is the epitome of the 3rd

U. S. Infantry Regiment affairs. !

The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) conducts memorial affairs to honor our fallen comrades and ceremonies and

special events to represent the Army, communicating its story to our Nation's citizens and the world.
