As a human being, I struggled to find

some rationale behind extremisms and

violence. While covering the Memorial

Service at Fort Hood on November 10,

2009, I felt great deal of sadness, remorse

and guilt. As an American of Muslim

Faith, I feel compelled to apologize to

those who were wounded, and the family

members of those who lost their precious

lives during the Fort Hood tragedy.

BEST REGARDS,

STRAIGHT FROM THE EDITOR

EDITOR IN CHIEF

Dear Editor,

I hope that my press credentials will besent to me as soon as possible. Because Ishall enjoy covering the Nobel Peace PrizeCeremony in Norway where your PresidentObama will come to receive his prestigiousaward. I am so glad for this rare opportunityto take pictures of the President of USA.This is a once in a lifetime opportunity onthe 10th of December. This will also be anamazing moment for me because PresidentObama will be the 4th famous Nobel PrizeWinner that I have take photos of at theseceremonies.

I thank you all for all the inspiration andhelp to me. I could not do what I am doingwithout you. Even with my media education, you gave me the "right push." I have pic-tures of many celebrities and Royal Familymembers. Some of my journalist friends andphotographers are amazed over my work.So I will continue my work with great effort.

I was one of 13 photographers chosen byMichael Jackson to shoot photos of himwhen he had His History Tour in Norway. Iwill soon like to write a success story andgive you most of the credit. I am very happywith my life and do what ever I can do giveIFPO the very best reputation. On one occa-sion I was invited to dinner with famouspolitical leaders and they even paid myhotel bill. I will never forget it. I was in aPrincess Wedding in Norway when this hap-pened.

I am an open hearted man and a formerpolitician so I understand diplomacy andkindness which I believe are the keys tosuccess. If you really burn for a case andare really polite, doors will open for you. That makes me humble. Because peoplewill know that you are sincere, you will staya step ahead of the crowd when you doyour very, very best and others will feelcomfortable in your company.

I had a real set back because of a carcrash and in the last few years I have strug-gled with 3 brain injuries. My neck wasbadly hurt and I can only use three fingerson my right hand. But I love to take photos -- that is my passion -- and I believe thathelped me to get on "foot" again...

Thank You and Bless You All.

Faithfully yoursMember 58910Alexander Ramse OlsenRena N-Norway

From 35mm ... To The Digital Revolution

My first camera was a Brownie box

camera made by Eastman Kodak. My

first 35mm was an old Agfa I picked

up at a Goodwill store when I was a

kid. Once I started getting good pic-

tures with these old cameras I was

hooked. I started carrying my camera

ever where I went. By the time I was

in high school I was shooting pictures

for the school camera club and the

local newspaper. I have been at it ever

since.

In those days you started to learn

quickly about framing, composition

and the different grain structures of the

silver halide crystals in film and paper

and how they affected your finished

product. We started to learn about

high speed black and white films,

color, Kodachrome and Ektachrome

transparency films and what enhanced

the reds and green/blues of your pic-

tures. In those days you learned by

trail and error and took tips from more

experienced photographers. I always

worked as an amateur photographer

and continued working with newspa-

pers when I got out of the US Navy in

the late 70’s.

By the 80’s I learned about IFPO

and joined so I would have credentials

so I could get to photograph events

that only allowed press photographers

in the venue. I have taken pho-

tographs from Canada to Mexico,

Eastern Europe, and Russia and from

South America to Asia. In 1988 when

I was published on the second c o l o r

cover of International Photographer

with my shot in Peggy’s Cove, Nova

Scotia I was elated. (International Pho-

tographer magazine changed its title to

Todays Photographer International in

the early 90’s.) Since that time I have

had articles and photographs published

in professional journals and tourism

magazines. I once even got to do back

stage photography with the M o o d y

Blues at a concert.

As time went on I purchased better

cameras and started using medium and

large format films. But if you were

working shooting for a publication we

all learned about deadlines. That is

when most of us after a shoot rushed

back to our dark rooms somewhere in

the house and we learned about how

chemicals reacted to light and were

processed to reveal an image. Then we

rushed our finished product to the

newspaper or magazine so we could

get published. Usually if it was a

magazine you rushed to the post office

to send off your finished product.

ONCE I WAS ASKED, “HOW DO YOU TAKE

A GREAT PHOTOGRAPH?” MY ANSWER WAS

AND STILL IS, “ALWAYS HAVE A CAMERA

WITH YOU AND BE READY TO TAKE ONE.”

PEGGY’S COVE, A PHOTO BY ROBERT HALL,WAS FEATURED ON THE COVER OF THE

IFPO IN 1988. !

When the original founding directors

congregated in 1983 to set the course for a

possible International Freelance Photogra-

phers Organization (IFPO), the visions

were sincere but less clear.

The intent was to address the needs of

the freelance photographer who needed

something larger than himself for support

and assistance. It was also to create an

organization which truly addressed the

needs of the working photographer at any

level -- beginners, photojournalists, or full

time studio and commercial photographers.

The vision was to help any photograph-

er at any level achieve his or her goals.

Intent was very clear; visions of how to

were less clear. Even so a decision was

made to forge ahead in early 1984.

With an abstract framework, lots of

enthusiasm and little more than “air,”

IFPO placed its first ad in Modern Photog -

raphy magazine. Economic times were bad

with jobless rates high. The times were

ripe for the make money with your camera

appeal and that slogan alone set the course

to fulfill the IFPO goals.

From the very first 25 members we had

requests for Model Release Forms, Press

Credentials, Business Cards and Business

Forms -- the things that freelance photog-

raphers evidently needed. Those requests

were the tip of the iceberg and were key to

developing the support that members need.

The next interesting occurrence was

when members began to write letters about

their successes. Those were so inspiring

that a newsletter was created to share the

stories with other IFPO members. Then the

the success stories really began to roll in

with photos -- too many for a newsletter,

so a magazine was born: I n t e r n a t i o n a l

Photographer.

Since the organization had no revenue

to support printing costs, the first few

issues were printed in black and white on

loose pages and stapled together on the

dining room table of one of the founding

8 Today's Photographer International www.ifpo.net

Pets and their related products and

services are a multi-billion industry in

this country. Most people consider

pets to be members of the family and

care for them as such. Pets, just like

children, become part of the family

history. Families will spend money for

portraits of their children or pets. And

they want more than just a playful

candid with a point and shoot camera.

This is why pet photography can add

real dollars to your monthly income.

I incorporated pet photography into

my freelance photography services a

few years ago. I became more serious

after I contributed my services to pho-

tograph rescued animals from the Kat-

rina disaster three years ago. Now it is

a vital part of my business along with

wedding photography and shooting

for biking magazines. Working with

pets is very much the same as working

with people -- they must feel comfort-

able with you and your camera. The

following tips can “jump start” your

pet photography business.

The secret to capturing the perfect

pet shots are patience and persistence.

With animals of any kind, whether it

is cats, dogs or horses, you are a

stranger and it takes time to win their

trust and attention. It is sometimes

challenging but can be fun and

rewarding.

To shoot small animals in a studio

Soft box continuous lighting in the

studio avoids the distraction that

strobe lighting could cause. Never use

flash with animals indoors or out. Dis-

able your flash and shoot at a higher

ISO for adequate lighting. I shoot at

ISO 400 with two soft boxes. Also to

make sure my shots are not blurry, I

put my camera on a tripod at the pet’s

eye level so I can move around while

shooting.

First, it is vitally important to take

time to get acquainted with the pet.

Having the owner or a helper present

makes the job easier. Dogie and cat

treats are a must. Give the animal time

to explore and sniff the new surround-

ings before starting the shoot. Then

offer a treat -- to win big points. As

soon as you sense that the animal is

comfortable, remove leashes and col-

lars (unless you are in a location

where it is prohibited) or anything else

that might be distracting.

When you are ready to shoot,

explain your plans to the helper. Make

sure the he or she understands where

the animal should be placed -- on a

table or other setup -- then quickly

moves aside as you fire away. Shoot-

ing at the pet’s level most often

requires bending down and sometimes

even shooting on your knees. Be sure

to leave plenty of marginal space on

all sides of the subject for enlarge-

ments.

How do you actually shoot a pet in

your set-up? A squeaky toy is

absolutely priceless in getting an ani-

mal’s attention. Make sure you hold it

in your free hand and give it a good

squeak when you are ready to release

the shutter. A dog’s ears will perk up

and he will look straight toward the

sound…near the eye of the camera! If

you don’t have access to a squeaky,

cat or puppy sounds made just before

pressing the shutter release will also

do the trick. You will feel silly, but it

will get the attention of the animal.Cats love the cat toys that are easily

found at dollar stores. The ones with a

feather attached to the end of a stringfastened to a stick work best (and areeasy to make). You can dangle it infront of the cat to get its attention thenmove it away quickly before clickingthe shutter. When the animal is good, reward it frequently with a treat beforeyou proceed. Shoot several shots fromthe same angle in each position. Askyour pet helper to move the animalfrom one side to the other to captureits best side. You can never shoot toomany digital shots but you can delete!

Make sure you have a table or benchthat will support the weight of the ani-mal. A small folding child size cardtable works perfect for small dogs andcats. You can make your own back-drops using low cost remnant fabricfrom a fabric or department store. A36 inch width by 72 inch length usual-ly is plenty for shooting an averagesize dog or cat. My favorite one is avelour psychedelic tie dye print pur-chased for less than $5.00. The vibrantcolors works well with any color ani-mal. Another favorite and a must, is apiece of black velvet or dark velourcloth for shooting light colored ani-mals against a dark background. Awhite shaggy fake fur type usuallyworks well with darker colored ani-mals. For covering your table, make

Digital photography opens the door

to a whole new realm of possibilities

for your wedding photography busi-

ness. For one, you can fire as many

pictures as your camera’s flash card

will accommodate, then go back and

delete your “bloopers.” My motto is

“you can always delete, but you can

never add.” Shooting unlimited is the

advantage of the digital format.

I shoot with a Nikon D70, an entry

level professional SLR digital camera

purchased about 3 years ago when the

SLR’s with interchangeable lens first

hit the market. It came with the stan-

dard menus, auto focus and the image

stabilization factor built into the lens

to eliminate camera vibration. (Many

have a huge selection of menus that

are not really necessary since the same

results can be achieved with most

computer software editing programs.)

For all the information on your specif-

ic camera’s capabilities, read your

manual -- again and again!

When shooting occasions require

speed, automatic settings work

beautifully and may mean the differ-

ence in capturing that once in a life-

time shot or missing a great moment.

If your eyes are less than perfect, shoot

on auto focus but make sure you have

your camera set on the correct auto

focus mode in your menu. The focus

setting you choose will depend on

what you are shooting … a person or a

group of people. Your owner’s manual

will tell you which mode to shoot in

accordingly.

I shoot in the highest resolution pos-

sible, large image size at 400 speed for

most shots, auto focus, JPEG format

with RGB mode, using a 4 GB flash

card for tons of

pictures … this

again, is set

through your

camera’s menu.

If you want crisp

clean enlarge-

ments up to a 16

x 20 or slightly

larger, you can

do so with a

camera with at

least a 6 – 8

mega pixel fea-

ture. So, before

you book your

first wedding,

understand the

capabilities of

y o u r c a m e r a .

Then make sure

y o u and y o u r

camera can meet

expectations!

You must be

prepared in order

to reduce the

stress of wedding

days. Asking the

bride to prepare a

list of “must

have shots” saves time and places her

in control. It is imperative that you

understand what she expects -- does

she want mostly posed, traditional

photos or a photojournalistic story of

her wedding day? Some brides want

both. If possible offer her a checklist

to help with her decisions. Once the

list is complete, discuss it again to

make sure you are in agreement.

On the wedding day allow about two

hours prior to the wedding to shoot

many of the traditional shots. Be sure

to have your batteries fully charged

and lots of extras on hand. Many

Paves the Way To the Future

The Universal Press Credentials

issued by IFPO’s AI News Service are

the result of nearly 27 years of research

and development using vital input from

IFPO press photographers. The design

and issuing information meet the strin-

gent requirements of press officials and

law enforcement around the world.

Each time an IFPO Press photograph-

er has successfully covered an event

or appeared at a news site since 1984

he or she has paved the way for those

that follow. Now we have the oppor-

tunity and the responsibility to pave

the way for A I photographers of the

future.

The purpose of the American Interna-

tional News Service (AI) U n i f o r m

Code is to create a lasting visual

impact that matches our current name

recognition. To do that we have to

make sure that all of our AI Correspon-

dent Photographers present exactly the

same u n i f o r m credentials and other

tools for success no matter where they

show up in the world to cover an event.

The purpose is to raise awareness and

create a permanent visual impact.

What is the purpose?

1. To improve access for A I C o r r e-

spondent photographers.

2. To forge a visual impact that will

create a lasting impression.

3. To pave the way for future AI Pho-

tographers.

When AI Correspondents arrive in

uniform at all kinds of events all over

the world, only then can the power of

the uniform make its impact to pave

the way for quicker and easier access

The AI News ServiceUniversal Uniform Code

Every year IFPO tries to launch at least one major program based on what we've

learned from experience and requests from IFPO member photographers working in the

field. The new USPRESSCORPS.ORG Press Program is the latest expansion of IFPO

press programs which were originally launched in 1984. We encouraged and received a

tremendous amount of feedback in the past year which was the basis for the format of the

new USPRESSCORPS.ORG Press Program.

The recurring theme seemd to be that many venues around the

world now require press photographers to show more than one

press card. To meet those requirements and other considerations,

IFPO expanded the press programs to include a new, elite US

Press Corps program which issues a Press Hard Card -- coveted by most press photogra-

phers. USPRESSCORPS.ORG will be permanently limited to only 1500 experienced

IFPO press photographers.

The new USPRESSCORPS.ORG Press Credentials serve 3 purposes:

1) Press hard cards are now issued by most respected media organization and are

expected at most major venues. The photo hard card symbolizes the highest

level of credentials and presents a positive image for the serious press photogra-

pher.

2) Many venues, especially for professional sports, are now asking for at least two

press cards in order to be considered for access to the event. The hard card is

expected to elevate the prestige of the photographer and will certainly epito-

mize the preeminence of the issuing organization.

3) Press hard cards with the photo placed in the manufacturing process are the

most recognized cards for serious photographers. They cannot be duplicated

effectively and, therefore, command respect whenever presented. IFPO now has

the technology to turn almost any photo into a professional head shot for the

production process.

The USPRESSCORPS.ORG program is specifically designed to enhance the stature of

IFPO press photographers and to meet the expectations of press officials and law enforce-

ment internationally. In the near future only press hard cards will be recognized at most

venues.

Qualified IFPO photographers have been notified of their status and invited to join

USPRESSCORPS.ORG. If you have not been notified and believe you qualify, contact

IFPO customer service at 336-945-9867 or email [email protected].

Fact-based, well-documented, unbiased press coverage may be more important today

than almost any time in history. With major newspapers folding monthly and others cut-

ting publishing schedules there is soon going to be vacuum to be filled. Also, the main-

stream media is either left or right leaning and true journalism seems to be in jeopardy.

Since 1984 IFPO Press photographers have covered some of the most high profile

events in the world including the Inauguration of Presidents Barack Obama and George

W. Bush, the Chinese Protest March in Tiananmen Square in 1989, the 1995 bombing of

the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City and the 9/11 Terrorist Attack of the

World Trade Center in New York in 2001. Thousands of sports and entertainment events

and hundreds of other lesser events are covered everyday in the most populated cities of

the world as well as the most remote regions by IFPO press photographers.

The mission of the USPRESSCORPS.ORG is to create a core of 1500 top notch press

photographers to provide comprehensive coverage that is factual and in context directly

to major news outlets for distribution. For more information contact IFPO at 336-945-

IT’S NOT THE CAMERA; IT’S THE PHOTOGRAPHERBy Jose F. Aguilo IPFO, Denver, Colorado

Most of today’s press photographers

use very expensive Digital Single Lens

Reflex (DSLR) cameras.

I use advanced Point And

Shoot Digital cameras.

However, I use them in

their manual mode con-

trol system. They have

their limitations but I

operate on the old theory: It is not the

camera; it is the photographer. A good

photographer can make things happen

behind almost any camera.

As you will be able to appreciate I

don't follow or emulate other photog-

raphers photography styles; however I

learned The Zone System 5 (Ansel

Adams) many years ago. Since then I

have adopted my own style. I like to

express what I see in my mind and I

am very happy doing what I do --

research.

Digital camera sensors seem to gen-

erate noise while taking photo images

in dim light or at night. These cam-

eras do not have RAW file feature as

an DSLR camera. The file type is

JPEG only; so it is quite a challenge

for a photographer with these limita-

tions. However, with the proper soft-

ware for noise removal and the proper

technique during image processing

nice images can be produced.

Infrared Photo Images

There is more than one way to take

infrared images. You can use infrared

filters in front of the camera lens or an

Infrared Only Modified Digital Cam-

era such as the Fuji FinePix S9100.

There are also infrared plug-ins for

image processing software in the mar-

ket and some companies are dedicated

to sell or modify digital cameras.

Some photographers are dedicated in

this field either for scientific work or

special effect photo images. Many

images look like they were taken dur-

ing the spring or summer. I developed

a technique to acclimatize the camera

for the shooting of these infrared

images during the winter of 2007 in

Colorado. There is a very high risk of

damage to the electronic circuits of a

digital camera if heavy water conden-

sation should develop inside.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) Images

Many photographers might use the

color to B/W conversion technique

during image processing in the com-

puter. I prefer to shoot one set of

images in color and one set of images

in B/W mode in the camera. Twenty

years ago the only way was to use

B/W film or color film or to carry two

cameras -- one with color and one with

B/W film. With the proper Auto Expo-

sure Bracketing technique and an

HDR (High Dynamic Range) image

processing software, B/W images can

turn out quite interesting. I use sets of

three, five and up to seven images for

HDR photography either in color or

B/W.

Why High Dynamic Range (HDR)

Images?

High dynamic range imaging (HDR)

is a set of techniques that allow a

greater dynamic range of luminance

between the lightest and darkest areas

of an image than standard digital

imaging techniques or photographic

methods. This wider dynamic range

allows HDR images to represent more

accurately the wide range of intensity

levels found in real scenes ranging

from direct sunlight to faint starlight.

HDR imaging fits my adopted style

and what I do -- research! !

Many, many times over the years a

photographer has called or written to

report that his or her photos have been

used without permission, or with per-

mission but without payment, photo

credit or other related problems. In

ninety-nine percent of the reports the

problems could have been avoided by

using a cover letter or a simple agree-

ment in writing or using an IFPO

Business Form.

The following steps should provide

protection for most situations.

1) Copyrights are inherent to the pho-

tographer. However, an inventory

list of images with the copyright

notice ( E x : © 2 0 0 8) is a friendly

reminder that the work is protected

by copyright laws. Also a short

notice such as, “May be reproduced

only with written permission of the

author” could be added.

2) Each time a photo or digital image

leaves your possession, it should be

accompanied by signed and dated

permission for use with terms and

conditions stated. This is the first

step to a contract for use -- even if

no payment is involved. KEEP A

COPY FOR YOUR FILES.

3) Digital images require even more

protection. NEVER send your

original files. Not even just for

someone to consider. Send a copy

of digital images along with text

files of the first two items above.

4) Follow up

by phone or

email within

5-8 business

days to see if

your images

arrived and if

there is inter-

est etc. Mention that complete

information is in the package.

5) A L W A Y S send a postage paid

return envelope when submitting by

mail if you expect your work to be

returned.

6) Submissions by email are just “out

there” in an unknown domain. It is

much safer to mail a disc with your

name and copyright notice on the

disc. We are not suggesting that you

never email an image but you

should know and trust the receiver

and believe that terms for an agree-

ment can be made.

7) Once there is an agreement for an

image is to be used, the terms must

be set before the use occurs. Exam-

ple: One photo may be used once

for $25 or any amount that is satis-

factory. You may even want the

benefit of having your photos pub-

lished without payment. If so, that

should be agreed upon up front.

8) Others conditions must also be

met. Will you get photo credit? Will

you get a copy of the work pub-

lished? Can you buy extra copies if

you need them?

9) When is payment made? Upon

publication? Within 30 days? At the

end of the publishing cycle? It real-

ly doesn’t matter as long as you

understand and agree to it.

10) Finally, all terms and conditions

should be confirmed in writing and

signed by both parties. Sounds like

too much work? Not so. Two copies

of a simple cover letter can do the job

for you. Simple business forms can do

the job for you even better. (See the

offer for a lifetime supply of IFPO

Business Forms on pages 2 and 3 for

$39.95)

What happens if you have released

your images without an agreement for

use and learn they have been used?

Contact the user. Try to work through

the steps listed here. Most everyone

understands that copyright infringe-

ment can be serious business. In most

situations, something fair and equi-

table can be negotiated even after pho-

tos have been used.

It’s much easier to take the simple

steps required to protect your work at

the time it leaves your possession than

to try to get control of it after use.

Keeping a log of photo packages,

digital images etc that are in the hands

of potential users helps you track

usage, payments and packages that

should be returned. It also serves as a

reminder of where often your best

work is located and where and why

you should submit it elsewhere.

Using business forms designed

especially for photographers not only

help protect your work, it’s a short cut

to learning about copyrights, rights to

use, terms and conditions. Just select

the form that seems to match your job

and complete it! You should never

have to worry about protecting the use

of your photos again. !

IFPO’s Stock Listing ServiceThe following elements clearly distinguish the

differences in the IFPO Stock Listing Service and

a stock agency:

1. The service provided to IFPO members is a

STOCK PHOTO LISTING SERVICE and

NOT an agency.

2. Each photographer manages his own sales.

3. No commissions will be charged ever.

4. Image buyers will browse the IFPO image

bank on the internet, select the photos, get the

price, index number and contact information to

order directly from the photographer who

owns the images.

5. Members may set their own pricing for each

photo sold.

6. Complete copyright standards will be avail-

able at the site for image buyers and IFPO

member photographers (the sellers).

7. Image searches by buyers may be made by

subject.

8. The most important part of any Stock Photo

Service is its indexing system that allows an

image buyer to identify a photo for purchase.

Members are asked to identify their pictures by

their 5 digit member number plus a 5 character

code of their own choosing. Example: IFPO

member 99999 might use Index Codes of

99999-KID01, 99999-KID02, etc.

ADVANTAGES OF THE

IFPO STOCK GALLERY SERVICE

w w w . i f p o . n e t / s t o c k . h t m l

• List only the number of quality imagesyou wish to list -- not 10,000 to 50,000 asrequired by agencies.

• You can add fresh images at your conve-nience. No minimums are required -- suchas the 1000 new images per year by manyagencies.

• There are no contracts, exclusive oro t h e r w i s e -- to tie up your images foryears as with an agency.

• The price you set is what you get - -could never happen with an agency.

• There are no commissions ever -- unlikeagencies who always take at least 50 per-cent of sales.

• Income from sales is instant and allyours -- very different from agencieswhere payment usually follow sales by 6 to8 months.

• Model and other applicable releases arerequired for stock images listed with IFPO-- the same as with an agency.

• Current and new clients can see yourfresh images instantly and contact you tobuy -- which could never happen with astock agency.

• The more images you list with the IFPOPicture Listing Service the more likely youare to make money -- which is the same aswith an agency.

• The more SUBJECTS you list with theIFPO Picture Listing Service, the morelikely you are to make money over the longhaul -- which is also true with an agency.

SELL PHOTOS YOU ALREADY HAVE!

Successful stock libraries contain HIGH QUALITY images of everyday life situations. IFPO members shoot such images everyday as a matter of

course. However, unless a photographer has hundreds or thousands of images, he may be shunned by the large stock houses. This could happen for two

reasons, he simply may not be recognized as a successful stock photographer or his stock of a few dozen images is too small for an agency to consider.

The IFPO Stock Listing service removes these barriers totally and opens doors to the international sales market.

Page 21: Photographer The Make Money With Your Camera Magazineaipress.com/2010.Annual.pdf · 8 Tips for Pet and Wedding Photography By Becky ÒKrickettÓ Harrison Huller 13 ItÕt Not the Camera;

To celebrate the 25th Anniver-

sary of IFPO many things

were considered. The intent

was to commemorate our first 25 years

in a way to honor the contributions of

the members who have been the dri-

ving force and heart of the organiza-

tion. After long deliberation it was

determined to induct those still active

charter members and other recent

deserving members into a permanent

Freelance Photographer’s Hall of

Fame and to award an Honorary

Degree of Distinction to each one.

When the International Freelance

Photographers Organization (IFPO)

was founded in 1983, no one could

have possibly foreseen 25 years into

the future. Now, twenty-five years

later, the original mission of IFPO --

to be the primary source of support for

the universe of freelance photogra-

phers -- has stood the test of time and

has surely grown beyond the wildest

imaginations of the original founders.

IFPO’s first member was actually

enrolled on January 9, 1984. From that

day forward IFPO evolved into a

member driven organization. That

simply means that members asked for

services and support and IFPO

responded with research and develop-

ment. That process evolved over the

years to make IFPO what it is today,

the longest continuing central source

of support for freelance photographers

around the world.

Fortunately, it was relatively easy to

identify the Hall of Fame candidates.

Since day one IFPO has maintained a

transactional data base that records

every single activity of each IFPO

member. That includes program par-

ticipation, editorial submissions, press

assignments, photo contest entrants

and other information such as pub-

lishing credits, internet home pages

URLs and more. Many members

have shared their success stories out-

side IFPO. This is also noted in our

membership records. This total

process pinpointed 3319 IFPO mem-

bers (out of 78,656) to be permanently

inducted into the IFPO Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame IFPO members

were inducted on January 2, 2008.

Each one is being notified by letter or

e-mail. If you were not notified, but

believe you may qualify, you may

check to see if your name is listed as a

Hall of Fame member at

www.ifpo.net/halloffame. Enter your

member number plus the first 3 char-

acters of your last name (8 characters

total). If you were inducted your name

will appear on the list.

There is a chance that there are a

few deserving Hall of Fame Members

that we were not able to identify from

our extensive records and other

research who should be honored in the

Hall of Fame. If you did not receive

notification of your induction and feel

that you should be considered, please

call 336-945-9867 to update your

records and discuss your potential.

To further honor and recognize the

Freelance Photographers Hall of Fame

members, IFPO created a unique,

definitive Hall of Fame Portfolio

exclusively designed to share the Hon-

orary Degree of Distinction with

clients and the most discerning friends

and family. Each item in the portfolio

is graced with the distinctive IFPO

Hall of Fame Logo.

The portfolio includes 1 IFPO Hall

of Fame Lapel Pin of silver inlaid into

a field of black, 1 IFPO Hall of Fame

Honorary Degree of Distinction Diplo-

ma and Charter in a Leatherette Pre-

sentation Case plus 1 IFPO Hall of

Fame Member Passport distinctly

marked. Also a Directory of IFPO

Hall of Fame Members (to be pub-

lished and mailed in 2009) is included

in the portfolio and will be mailed

only to those members who apply for

the full portfolio package.

The Freelance Photographer’s Hall

of Fame will be permanently located

on the IFPO internet site. Each Hall of

Fame member’s record will be also

marked permanently. But it is the Hall

of Fame Portfolio -- The Lapel Pin,

Honorary Degree of Distinction Diplo-

ma, Charter and Passport ... that con-

vey the prestige of being inducted into

the IFPO Freelance Photographer’s

Hall of Fame.

Congratulations to each of you. It

was your lasting interest and ceaseless

suggestions that drove an organization

from its infancy in 1983 to more than

80,000 members strong with interna-

tional recognition in 2008. With your

continued interest and that of others

who follow in your footsteps, the

IFPO Hall of Fame will continue to

review members qualifications and

induct even more members in the next

twenty-five years. !

Maybe I'm the only member in this region (Quetta, Balochis-tan, Pakistan), so I request more concession in regards to orderdeadlines because the political and social situation over here -- itis very tense as there is daily news about the drone attacks onQuetta City where I live.

Many have doubts about me because I get letters from US.Maybe I have been marked and during last few months many ofmy friends and relative have been targeted. My life is in dangerevery day. Life over here is very hazardous. My first assignment for Today’s Photog -

r a p h e r was shuttle launch STS-96 on May

20, 1999 which was the 2nd flight to the

International Space Station. Even though I

have covered most of the launches, roll outs

and landings since then, I still have no

words to describe the awe and wonder of it

all.

The Ares 1-X flight is part of a larger

flight test program that will include five

flights of the Orion Launch Abort System

between 2009 and 2012. An Ares 1-Y flight

test will follow in 2014, then an integrated

flight of both the launch vehicle and space-

craft, Orion 1 in early 2015.

The flight test this year is expected to

provide NASA with an enormous amount of

data that will be used to improve the design

and safety of the next generation of Ameri-

can spaceflight vehicles, which could again

take humans beyond low Earth orbit.!

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY MADE EASYCONTINUED FROM PAGE 9

brides still cling to the old tradition

ofbrides still cling to the old tradition

of not wanting the groom to see them

until they walk down the aisle. This

requires shooting the bride and brides-

maids first. At least an hour is needed

for this. Be sure to shoot the mother of

the bride and others helping the bride

get dressed. A kiss, applying lipstick,

hair and makeup shots are all impor-

tant. The bride looking out a window

or into a mirror using ambient lighting

makes for great photos in black and

white or sepia tones -- disengage your

flash for best results. Shoot the bride

and all bridesmaids before moving to

the location of the ceremony.

At the ceremonial site shoot the

bride alone to capture her gown first.

Make sure you leave enough margin

above her head and below the bottom

of the dress to allow for enlargements.

After that, move on to shooting the

posed shots of bridesmaids and the

bride. Next, if children are part of the

ceremony shoot them in a variety of

poses and don’t forget the candids!

After that, it’s time to move on to

the groom and groomsmen. Don’t for-

get to shoot the parents of the groom

with their son. Equal billing is the key

to making both the bride and groom

happy. Shooting the groom’s party

should not take more than 30 to 45

minutes but you must appoint some-

one to round them up -- and keep

them together.

Find out early if the minister or per-

son performing the ceremony has

rules for shooting. Get this informa-

tion no later than at the rehearsal.

Some do not allow photos at all dur-

ing the wedding; others allow photog-

raphy but no flash. You must shoot

accordingly. If photos are allowed but

flash is restricted, resort to your

widest aperture lens (disengage your

flash), then shoot in manual or aper-

ture priority mode. Using a checklist

to set your camera on the modes and

settings ahead of time saves time and

worry. Save the special effect photos

or unique and unusual shots for later,

when you have more time to make

necessary adjustments to your camera.

Digital photography has changed all

that and removed the chemicals and

the processing part of the equation.

Most of us viewed the first digital

cameras as little more than a novelty.

As time progressed and they got better

at resolution we had to take a serious

look at how this new technology

would fit in to our photographic needs.

Today I have three digital cameras

and, except for landscapes and pure

black and white photography I use my

digital cameras. Not only has it

become more efficient, a computer ter-

minal and an ink jet printer have

replaced those darkrooms bathed in

dim red lights with the smell of Kodak

fixer and the sound of trickling water

that most photographers grew up with.

The term 'revolution' is perhaps

overused, but for those of us that grew

up with the old technology we have

had to embrace all its changes. One

thing has remained the same since the

first photograph was taken back in

1826, getting a good quality photo-

graph for print is still required.

So, today I have gone from shooting

and writing for newspapers to working

for a monthly magazine

and spend my time in

composition and creativi-

ty on a computer. I don’t

rush to the post office or

to a publication office

anymore. I attach every-

thing either to an e-mail

or “upload” my work to a

computer server by the

push of a button. I do miss the smell of

the chemicals and the sound of the

trickle of water, but I don’t miss the

rushing around the darkroom to make

a deadline.

Is it a revolution? Maybe it is

because photography has been revolu-

tionized by digital photography. But,

one element is still true, as I once

answered the question, “How do you

take a great photograph?”, “Always

have a camera with you and be ready

to take one.” !

LET’S TALK EQUIPMENT & TECHNIQUESBy Dennis Hodges IFPO Kansas City, Missouri

Model: Shannon

To me ebay is the modern day ver-

sion of the old Sears & Roebuck Cata-

log which many people called their

Wish Book. Recently I was on ebay

looking at photography equipment

and happened to stumble onto a 28-

200 Promaster camera lens -- which I

had never heard of -- with a ‘buy

now’ price of only $139.99. I thought

this was probably just a come on so I

moved on. Later after thinking about

it I decided to take another

look. Wolfe’s Camera

Store in Topeka,

Kansas was the

seller and they

listed an 800

t e l e p h o n e

n u m b e r .

Wolfe has a

very good

reputation so I

gave them a

call. I learned

that the PRO-

MASTER lens is

made to Wolfe’s

specification by

Tamron.

After talking for a con-

siderable amount of time to Mike,

Wolfe’s sales representative, I ordered

the PROMASTER, Auto focusing,

Spectrum 7, AF28-200mm, f/3.8-5.6,

XR Aspherical for Minolta

Maxxum/Sony Alpha. This lens is

exceptionally lightweight. It has a

minimum focal distance over the

entire zoom area; you can focus at

19.3 inches from your subject. It has a

maximum magnification of 1:4 (at

200mm). This lens achieves high

magnification zoom performance with

a compact size and is considerably

less expensive than name brand lens-

es.

The very next day I received the

lens. I wanted to test it right away so I

ran a casting call on the internet for a

model. I got several replies but really

wanted to test this lens on a Super

Model. I happen to remember Shan-

non, a professional model and actress,

who had contacted me several months

earlier. I sent her an email explaining

that I wanted to arrange a shoot with

an experienced model. She said she

could be in Kansas City within a few

days.

Shannon’s credits include being

hired by Walmart to be a living Barbie

for the “Barbie Cares” project spon-

sored by Mattel. For every used Bar-

bie donated to Barbie Cares, a new

Barbie doll is donated to Children’s

Hospitals. She was one of the Mis-

souri Patriot Girls, has modeled

for magazines, calendars, pin-

ups and has also done a lot of

promotional work. To help

with her acting career she

trains horses, plays tennis,

racquet ball and swims --

plus she is a kick boxer. To

book Shannon for acting and

modeling assignments con-

tact her at: shan-

[email protected]

After the successful shoot

with the Promaster lens I head-

ed to Photo Shop to edit and touch

up some of the images. I put off buy-

ing Photo Shop for a long time but

now I absolutely love it. However,

many photographers may not want to

spend the big bucks to buy Adobe

Photo Shop CS-4 for infrequent use. If

you are in that category, you can test a

similar photo shop program that is

TOTALLY FREE at www.picnik.com

The advantages are: no registration is

required. You fix your photos in just

one click. Use advanced controls to

fine-tune your results. Crop, resize,

and rotate in real-time. There are also

tons of special effects, awesome fonts

and top-quality type tools and baskets

of shapes from hand-picked designers.

It works on Mac, Windows, and

Linux. No downloads required and

nothing to install.

There is also a Picnik Premium that

costs $ 24.00 a year which I pur-

chased but if you are not really into

photo shop you probably wouldn’t

need it. There are many programs on

the market

that do not

come close

to this one

in their

touch up

c a p a b i l i -

ties. If you are not into serious com-

puter imaging but would like your

images to look better, you will love

P i c n i k . It is very user friendly and

anyone can hit the instant fix button

and it will change the brightness, con-

trast, saturation etc. in a matter of sec-

onds. If you don’t like what it has

done to your picture hit cancel and

your originally image pops back up.

I was recently thinking about how

rapidly things have changed in pho-

tography in the amount of time that I

have worked with Today’s Photogra -

pher Magazine. There is really too

much technology for any one person

to research and absorb. I believe that

many IFPO members feel the same

way I do -- that it is a real pleasure to

exchange little bits of information that

may be helpful and enjoyable. I read

every issue of this magazine from

cover to cover and always learn some-

thing new, thanks to the many very

loyal, long time members. I encourage

each of you to share your ideas and

successes. Good luck in the wonderful

new world of photography. !

directors to make a 24 page magazine

which was mailed to the then 3000 mem-

members -- so in 1988 the first real maga-

zine with a color cover was published.

From day one IFPO members have told

us what they need which has been the

basis for research and development of pro-

grams. That is still ongoing and led to the

development Hard Cards in 2009.

Editor and Founding Director Vonda

Blackburn, reflecting on history of IFPO

said, “I am proud of the service we pro-

vide. Our brain child has been highly

effective and virtually without competi-

tion. We started with little more than air in

1984 and developed into a world wide

organization which positively affects the

lives of thousands of photographers. I love

digesting, analyzing, creating and distribut-

ing helpful information and services -- and

I get to do it everyday!

In this culture for growth we are limited

only by our visions, creativity and experi-

ence. I love being available to assist,

encourage and guide or direct photogra-

phers as they pursue their goals. I have

always encouraged new ideas and wel-

comed ideas for sound changes.

Economic times today are similar to

those of 1983 when the make money with

your camera appeal first emerged. It works

today better than ever because over nearly

27 years IFPO has developed a back-up

system unequaled in the industry to sup-

port freelance photographers.”

The photos in this issue illustrate the

successes of IFPO photographers from

around the world. The future is bright as

there is a greater need today than ever for

photography. IFPO proceeds into the

future with a clear vision that the members

will tell us what to do and we will do it. !

YOU CAN BE AN

THE ADVANTAGEAn IFPO Distributorship is an exceptional

opportunity for IFPO members to achieve suc-cess and make money by taking advantage of the

millions of dollars and 15 years of research thathave gone into developing the IFPO / Today's

Photographer Magazine Concept. The modest

distributor's fee gives you the value of MIL-LIONS of dollars that have been invested in 15

years of advertising IFPO’s dependability, quali-ty and services.

Today's Photographer Magazine and its asso-

ciated products gets more exposure than anyother photography magazine. It is advertised reg-

ularly in display space advertising in PopularPhotography, Photographic, Outdoor Photogra-

pher, American Photographer and Shutterbug. Asa distributor, you get the direct benefit of this

advertising.

Today's Photographer is sold on Newsstandsthroughout the United States, Canada, and

around the world.IFPO is recognized in more than 140 coun-

tries on all continents of the world and has more

than 67,000 members. Today's PhotographerMagazine is currently being distributed to more

than 80,000 photography enthusiasts 4 times ayear.

Typically, distributorships or franchises thatgive a distributor this kind of exposure, promo-

tion and value are priced from $10,000.00 to

$150,000.00.

YOU CAN:•You can start a new business and coast in thewake of the IFPO flagship. Let its research, product development, name recognition and dol-lars spent on advertising make money for you.Let IFPO's rapid success plan turn into financialgrowth for you.

•You can reap the profits from more than 2.5 mil-lion dollars already spent on advertising in all themajor photography and video magazines. Letthese IFPO advertising dollars work for you andyour business by building name recognition forthe IFPO products and programs that you sell.

•You can offer IFPO products and programs toyour clients without spending a penny for marketresearch or product development. IFPO is con-stantly upgrading its products and services tomaintain its leadership position in the interna-tional marketplace.

•You can guarantee satisfaction for each productand program you offer. That customer satisfac-tion is backed up by IFPO and is a vital part ofthe IFPO success story.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

http://www.ifpo.net/dfaq

HOW IT WORKS1. DISTRIBUTOR DISCOUNT: You are enti-tled to order products and services from a cur-rent issue of Today's Photographer at a only50% of the listed standard price. For example:multiply list prices by 0.5 (a $68 membershipwould be $34.00). Half of $39.95 for example, would be $19.98 (rounded off to the nearestcent).

2. QUANTITIES AND SHIPMENTS: Order inany quantity. IFPO will ship to you or your cus-tomer direct. No minimums or quotas.

3. EXCLUSIONS: You CANNOT apply yourdistributor's discount to: USA or Foreign ship-ping • Workshop programs • Quantity discountpackages such as 3R0X, 3VVX, item numberscontaining “X”, or special offers with expirationdates • Classified and display a dvertising •Items in out-of-date issues may no longer bevalid • Items not sold by IFPO/American Imageare excluded. Items not sold in Today’s Photog-rapher magazine are excluded.

WHY YOU?•You may wish to purchase many IFPO pro-grams or services for yourself. A distributorshipwill save you 50%.

•You may be associated with a group such as acamera club, family members or close associateswho may want to participate in IFPO productsand services at discount prices.

•If you have a photography studio or similarbusiness may wish to arm all of your staff mem-bers with memberships and press program cre-dentials from IFPO to make them more competi-tive. An IFPO Distributorship would enablethem to do this at reduced costs to the studio orcompany.

•You may want to start down the road of beingyour own boss with an IFPO distributorship. Youcan start small, order in any quantities, part timeor full time. Most of all, you may have a fewhours a week to invest in your financial future.

MAKE MONEY:•A distributor could sell only 2 videos a weekand net up to $2000.00 a year. He could buildhis business up to 200 videos a week and bepulling in potentially $200,000.00 per year.

•A distributor could set up a network of 100Model Consultants "talent scouts" in an area.He would make nearly $15,000 just on themodel consultant kits and IFPO memberships, then would make more on the videos, forms, books and other items that consultants frequent-ly buy.

•A distributor could sell to schools and educa-tional institutions. IFPO's instructional videosare very popular with schools of all kinds(Junior Highs, High Schools, Colleges, TradeSchools, etc.). Schools typically purchase inlarger quantities, often 10 to 20 videos at a time.Currently, about 100 schools are purchasingfrom IFPO. There are tens of thousands more inthis country alone.

•Recreational groups sponsored by governmentor other non-profit groups. For example, Mili-tary bases have recreational programs thatinclude self-help and how-to programs on video.Currently, IFPO does a brisk business with mili-tary base purchase orders from only a few bases.

•Many other groups sponsor recreational pro-grams that would be very interested in photogra-phy instructional videos. Groups plan trips.Vacationers use cameras and camcorders.

•Photographer's swap meets or flee markets areideal places to set a booth and market IFPOproducts. In these situations, having merchan-dise to sell (like videos) is a plus. But if youdon't have the merchandise, be sure to get thename, address, and phone number of each per-son that stops by your booth. Each one is a

prospective customer for the future. If you runout of copies of Today's Photographer at yourbooth, you can always mail them one in thefuture with a special offer flyer of some kind.

REPEAT CUSTOMERSThe best opportunity you have to make

money as a distributor is to give your customersa REASON to do business with you. You canuse your own liberal distributor discount to youradvantage. If you can give your customers a 5or 10% discount by purchasing through you, then they have a reason to order with youinstead of ordering directly through mail orderwith IFPO. Your own margins may be a littleslimmer, but your volume would be much high-er.

Now you could consider distributingToday's Photographer Magazines liberally withyour business card attached and a notice thatoffers your own 5% or 10% discount if theyorder through you.

In this way, you would get the full advan-tage of repeat orders from the same customers.

Here is a sample list of schools and institutionsthat have already placed large orders directlywith IFPO:

AFETA, Camp Peary, VA; Miami Killian

Senior High School, Miami, FL; Leon County Schools,

FL; River East School Division, Winnipeg, Manitoba,

Canada; Aims Community College, Greeley, CO; CBN

TIPS FOR PET PHOTOGRAPHY

Continued From Page 8

sure you buy a washable fabric thatcan be laundered after each shoot. Ifyou don’t have a backdrop stand, cre-ate one by draping your fabric overone or two chairs behind the table.“Chip clips” from a dollar store arehandy to clamp the fabric down. Props

Check your local craft stores, flea

markets, and thrift stores for creative

props. The use of old pots, baskets, hat

boxes, boots, wash tubs and such are

great for smaller animals. If you really

want to be creative and have a very

docile cooperative pet, try a few wild

and silly shots like using the popular

pet clothes found at pet boutiques.

They really make fun whimsical shots.

You can always make your own pet

clothes by dressing them up in old

people clothes with the use of safety

pins to nip and tuck such as the shot of

the chocolate lab, “Smokey Joe.” This

picture was made using a men’s blaz-

er, tie, and a straw hat found at a thrift

store. It took much patience and many

shots to get the perfect one, not to

mention a very cooperative dog! It has

won several awards and reminds me of

the works of my favorite photograph-

er, William Wegman.

Animals on location

If you are shooting on location there

are several things you can do to assure

great shots. Never shoot in direct over-

head sunlight between 11:00 a.m. and

2:00 p.m. Best times are early in the

morning or late in the day when the

sun is at your back and the tempera-

tures are cooler so the animal does not

get over heated.

Shooting at the animal’s eye level is

a must even when shooting large ani-

mals such as horses. Remember to use

at least a 400 ISO. Forget the use of a

tripod for farm

animals, as you

will be moving

around too much.

Having a helper

again comes in

handy. If you

want a beautiful

shot of a horse

kicking up dirt

and galloping

across a pasture,

ask your helper to

run ahead or give

the commands

necessary to

make the horse run. If this doesn’t

work, have the owner use a lunging

rope and have the horse run in circles

while you are positioned in front of the

animal, panning and shooting con-

stantly. You can later edit out the rope

and background clutter.

Try converting some farm animal

shots into black and whites or sepia

tones. This nostalgic presentation

offers an option that is very appealing.

Also, if all the photos do not match

your expectations, you can convert

them to art sketches or abstracts using

your editing software.

I hope you will find these tips valu-

able to your pet photography business.

It has taken me years to learn through

trial and error what works best so I am

confident these pointers will work well

for you. Shooting pets is challenging

but you can have fun and make a few

dollars at the same time. !

A press photographer’s reputation is often based on his own codeof ethics. Although getting the story is the ultimate goal, ethical stan-dards can “make or break” a career. As a press photographer, it isyour duty to document newsworthy happenings — never altering cir-cumstances or interfering with action to enhance your photographs.Your photos should tell a story just as it happened. Meeting the highstandards of good press photography requires patience, determina-tion and a strong set of ethics which can be the difference betweensuccess and failure.

First, foremost and always remember that Press access is a privi-lege not to be abused. Use the following Code of Ethics to guideyou:

• Arrive early — at least 45 minutes to an hour before the event isscheduled to begin — in order to check in, find the press area, checkout the stage or facility lay-out and choose a vantage point.

• Never show up for an event unprepared. Not only should you have allthe proper equipment, you should have a basic knowledge and under-standing of the event. Do your homework!

• Try to work with promoters and authorized officials rather than againstthem.

• Conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times. Photographerswho complain or cause problems aren’t likely to be admitted again.

• Don’t just start shooting. Take time to think about what you’re covering.

• Stay within the boundaries of the photographers’ area. Never interferewith the action, criticize a player or performer or interrupt an authorizedofficial.

• Have patience. Resist the urge to inconvenience other photographersby changing spots. Your opportunity will come.

• Although it can be necessary to fight for a good position, always becourteous. You’ll find other photographers are usually willing to sharetheir space -- if you offer them the same courtesy. Try your best to getalong with other members of the press.

• Always live up to your obligations to promoters and publications.

• If you agree not to sell the photos commercially, DO NOT break thisagreement.

• Always clean up after yourself -- film wrappers, etc.

• Never photograph anyone in a compromising situation (backstage, locker rooms) unless it’s a public figure in a public place which qualifiesfor news. Don’t abuse the privileges you have been granted.

• Always remember you are a photographer on the job -- not a spectator.

Finally, the nature of breaking news makes preparation impossi-ble. However, when you arrive on the scene, you are a press pho-tographer -- expected to live up to the same ethical standards youhave learned to display at scheduled media events. With practiceand common sense, high ethical standards should some as natural-ly as pressing the shutter. !

The American Image Press Photographer’s Code of Ethics

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY MADE EASYCONTINUED FROM PAGE 28

One of the most important wedding

pictures is the bride being escorted

down the aisle, so fire away. Remem-

ber, she is the star of the show! Be

sure to be far enough away to capture

the entire full length of the bride and

her escort. Again leave space for

enlargements. Shoot in front from

about 15 feet away then from behind

to capture the entire length of gown.

If approved by the minister and the

bride and groom, shoot each part of

the ceremony from various locations,

holding your camera at different

angles for great shots. Be sure to shoot

the crucial kiss that seals the marriage,

again firing away to make sure you get

the perfect shot! Place yourself at the

end of the runway or at the front of the

aisle so you can catch the couple as

they are announced as husband and

wife. As they exit, fire away!

The after wedding shots must be

done quickly to facilitate the bride and

groom to the reception. Ask the minis-

ter or person performing the service to

make an announcement that the bride

and groom will arrive at the reception

as soon as pictures are finished. Now

you will take the posed final shots

where the entire party is together.

Take the normal entire group shots

and family shots. Don’t forget the

minister with bride and groom, lots of

the bride and groom alone. Make sure

you get all the pictures on the bride’s

list and lots of shots of both sides of

the family. Include the step-moms and

dads and other extended family mem-

bers ... no one should be left out.

At the reception shoot the cake

before it is cut, then the cutting and

the toast. (If possible you do not want

to be held up for hours while the cou-

ple stands in a long receiving line!)

Shoot plenty of casual shots includ-

ing those on the bride’s list. To

accommodate large groups shots, open

your widest angle lens fully and hold-

ing your camera up in the air at arms

length zoom out, aim the barrel of the

lens down and click several shots over

and over moving the camera at differ-

ent angles to make sure you have what

I call a good “aerial view!” Ask the

guests to look up at the lens. Check

your viewfinder or replay feature to

make sure you got the entire group

before moving on. Finally, shoot the

removing of the bride’s garter and the

throwing of the bouquet. After the

throwing of the rice and departure

shots your job is finished.

After the wedding, I edit the pictures

using my computer software to create

special effects, correct flaws, eliminate

duplicates and crop. I then review all

and choose only the very best shots. I

never include “border line” images. I

then burn two discs -- one for the bride

and groom -- a back-up for my files.

My wedding packages include the

disc and my service at one price with a

written release that the couple has

unlimited use of the images. They can

print locally or send them to a dis-

count online lab. They can even print

gallery wrap canvas enlargements and

choose their own wedding books. This

saves them money, and me the

headaches of providing proofs, pro-

ducing final prints and albums.

My fees depend on time spent, the

number of shots the bride has request-

ed, travel expense and my actual

shooting time if it is more than four

hours. I collect a non-refundable per-

centage of the agreed package price

when I book the date. A twenty-five to

fifty per cent deposit at booking is

standard. Weddings are seldom can-

celled but photographers could be --

unless there is an investment up front.

With the proper planning and a

good digital camera you can make

really good money for a few hours on

a week-end. The best part is that the

market never ends -- even in very bad

economic times! !
