Photo Slide shows
Photojournalism
• Still images
• That tell a story
• Are timely
• Don’t misrepresent
• Crop accordingly, accurately, fairly
• Sensitivity that applies to all journalism– Victims faced concealed, for example
Q&As
• Ask questions that require more than a yes/no answer.
• Strive for harder interviews.– Example: Counselor Q&A after Central High
School shooting
Text, Photos or Video?
• Photojournalism is different than broadcast journalism.
• Photojournalism is different than text
• What can a photo capture more powerfully than text at times?
• When could a still photo work more effectively than video?
Captions
• Extremely important in slide shows because they help tell the story
• Even with an audio track you want some captions to help lead the user through the narrative.
Examples
• Slide show with audio (Minneapolis bridge collapse)– User does not control, starts immediately
• Slide show in text– Reader has control– Art inherently still, like you’re in a gallery
• Slide shows are even being used for obits• Slide shows can mix the old and new
– Not all have audio• Slide shows can have reporter voice and
narrative

Using photoshop
• Crop photos with the same sensitivity that you would pick your quotes
• Your first and last photos in a slide show should be your best – like in a video package
• Max. width/height of photos for your slide shows is 500 pixels
• All photos should be in jpg/jpeg format
Creating a slide show in TNJN
• Select template 1 or 3
• Fill in the story form as usual (header, abstract, story body, etc.)
• Add photos and be sure to rank them in the order you want them to appear
• You’ll need to hit “save and continue editing” to get more photo fields to appear
