Over forty-six years ago, a group of forward-thinking farmers blazed trails in Sonoma County, creating a Map & Guide for local agriculture, inviting the public to meet their farmers and learn more about the origins of their food. These pioneers also produced the Gravenstein Apple Fair to celebrate the heir-loom apple and Sonoma County’s rural traditions. This was back in 1973, before the advent of Farmers’ Markets, CSAs and campaigns to shop locally. Over the years, some of the farmer members have changed, but the guiding vision of our organization has remained the same: to keep farms forever in Sonoma County.

Sonoma County Farm Trails is a 501(c)6 non-profit that has worked for de-cades to promote farmers and to educate the public about the importance of supporting local agriculture. Our mission is to “ensure the continuing eco-nomic viability of Sonoma County agriculture by instilling an apprecia-tion of ag as a vital part of our community and lifestyle.” In other words, we cultivate social and economic fields that our farmers might plant seeds of prosperity and resilience.

To that end, we publish this Map & Guide, maintain a dynamic website, orga-nize seasonal farm tours, fund scholarships for aspiring & young farmers, host farm to table feasts, produce the Gravenstein Apple Fair, and collaborate with a large network of organizations & individuals who care deeply about local agriculture, family farms and the future of our food system.

Current research and metrics indicate that the widespread incorporation of climate smart farming methods on small scale, diversified farms could be a major factor in mitigating global warming and ensuring food security. This is a hopeful thought! We’re particularly inspired these days by the leading role many of our farmers are playing in this movement. Techniques and practices such as no-till agriculture, regenerative ranching, rotational grazing, integrat-ed pest management, composting, water catchment, solar power, and use of methane digesters help to reduce carbon footprint, while cultivating healthier food systems, and in some cases actually sequestering carbon in the ground, where it enhances soil fertility.

Our theme for the 2019 Gravenstein Apple Fair is “Farmers Forever.” We recog-nize that growing and processing food for any community is truly a labor of love, a spectacularly demanding job, with increasingly tight margins. We hope you’ll join us at our signature events and on the trails throughout the year to celebrate and support the local heroes who feed and nourish us.

Sonoma County encompasses a wide variety of landscapes: from oak-studded hills to flood plains, from redwood groves to windswept beaches. Sonoma County Farm Trails members can be found in all of these places, offering agricultural products with their own sense of terroir: flavors and textures unique to their soil and microcli-mates.

We invite you to browse these pages as you travel around the county, getting to know the farmers and producers who constitute our vibrant agricultural community and the extraordinary land that sustains us all.

How to use the Map & Guide:

    1. Choose a region to explore. Farm Trails members are displayed in a series of 7 regional maps on the following pages. Members are listed with corresponding map location numbers (if they are open to the public). Please check listings to determine hours of operation. Some of our members are only open seasonally or by appoint-ment.

    2. Find a Farm Trails member. Turn to pages 4 and 5 for an alphabetized directory of farms, artisan producers, mar-kets and agriculture-based businesses that comprise our membership. Each listing includes contact information, short descriptions, and general hours of operation.

    3. Visit our dynamic website at FarmTrails.org and use it in conjunction with this Map & Guide. The website fea-tures a multi-level search function which details all the products, services, methods, techniques, events, etc. of our members. It also hosts Farm Trails resource pages, such as Dining, Lodging, Farmers’ Markets, CSAs, U-Pick, Craft Beverage Tastings, etc.

sonoma county’s rich farming history:Spotlight on Dutton Ranch’s Multi-Generational Story

    By Tim Tesconi

For more than 150 years, agriculture, anchored by family farms, has been the backbone of the Sonoma County econ-omy while defining the county’s land-scape and way of life.

As historian and Press Democrat colum-nist Gaye LeBaron so eloquently states, “Sonoma County’s history begins and ends with the land…We are, despite the march of time, still a farm county – with promise that it will endure.”

And agriculture has endured by chang-ing. Once prominent cash crops like hops, potatoes, cherries and prunes have come and gone. But dedicated farmers, like the Dutton Family, founding mem-bers and longtime supporters of Sonoma County Farm Trails, have stayed on the land by adapting their farming practices to market changes. The Dutton family has farmed here since 1852, growing ev-erything from potatoes to prunes and hay to pears in the evolving agricultural landscape. Today brothers Steve and Joe Dutton, fifth generation farmers, are fo-cused on top-tier wine grapes but, in a nod to their farming past, still farm more than 200 acres of Organic apples includ-ing Gravensteins.

The determination of old farming fami-lies to preserve their farmland and nur-ture a thriving farming community in Sonoma County is the envy of other re-gions in California and throughout the nation. In the 1960’s there were worries that Sonoma County would become like other rapidly developing counties, with orchards and farmland paved over by houses and shopping malls. But Sonoma County farmers vowed that would not happen. They supported strict zoning measures that preserved land for farm-ing.

Before European settlers arrived, indig-enous tribes tended and harvested the bounty this area provided, and they skill-fully managed the native landscape with controlled wildfire burns.

Since the 1850’s when pioneer farmers began supplying potatoes, wheat, butter and other staples to hungry gold miners, Sonoma County has been a major food shed for the San Francisco Bay Area. The

first half of the 20th Century – particu-larly the era from 1920 to 1940 – is what historians consider the Golden Age of-Sonoma County agriculture. There were more than 7,000 farms spread over more than 700,000 acres producing crops and livestock beyond the imagination of ear-ly day farmers.

In 1920, a dozen major crops combined to make Sonoma County the eighth rank-ing county in the entire nation in farm production. It was first nationally in wine grapes, first in eggs and poultry; second in prunes, canning cherries and hops, as well as being a national leader in the production of apples, milk and live-stock.

Today the county’s farm economy is propelled by wine grapes, which cover 60,000 of the county’s one million acres. But there are 500,000 acres devoted to pastureland and the small farms and or-chards that produce specialty crops like berries and Asian pears and artisan foods like goat cheese and peach jam.

Before and after horticulturist Luther Burbank selected Sonoma County for the plant breeding experiments that revolutionized agriculture, our farmers have diligently worked the land to make Sonoma County the premier wine and food region of California. The late Warren Dutton Jr. is one of the celebrated pio-neers of the premium wine grape indus-try. But Warren would have been just as happy growing prunes if they provided the financial returns to do what he loved – farming.

The Dutton family and prunes hold a special place in the history of Sonoma County agriculture. Steve and Joe Dut-ton’s great, great uncle Warren Dutton, their father’s namesake, leased some land in west Santa Rosa in the spring of 1881 with the idea of growing prunes, a crop offering promise. Dutton asked nurseryman Luther Burbank, who had arrived from his native Massachusetts just six years earlier, to deliver 20,000 French prune trees by the fall. The big order, which other nurseries deemed impossible, was delivered on schedule. The amazing horticultural feat not only launched a new farming endeavor but

gave birth to the legend of Burbank’s ge-nius as plant wizard.

The Dutton family grew prunes for near-ly a century but by the 1960’s prices were plummeting as production shifted

to the Sacramento Valley. Warren Dutton Jr. realized he needed a new crop and boldly took a chance to plant Chardon-nay grapes in west Sonoma County, now an area recognized for its world class-Chardonnay and other cool climate wine grapes like Pinot Noir.

Today the Duttons farm more than 1,000 acres of vineyards in western Sonoma County, selling their grapes to more than 50 wineries, with some of their fruit al-located to their own wine labels, Dutton Estate and Dutton-Goldfield.

As agriculture continues to redefine it-self, multi-generational farming families like the Duttons are intricately immersed in the unfolding next chapter of farm-ing’s enduring role in Sonoma County.

Tim Tesconi is a Director & Treasurer of Farm Trails. A native and lifelong resident of Sonoma County, he was the agriculture reporter for the-Press Democrat for 33 years. In 2006, he joined the staff of Sonoma County Farm Bureau where he wrote for the Sonoma-Marin Farm News and coordinated agriculture education programs. He served as Farm Bureau’s Executive Director for three years, retiring in 2015. Tesconi & his family live in Healdsburg.
