This month we would like to take the opportunity to recognize and thank all the House staff for their fine efforts that make all our lives more enjoyable. Angela Peros and her staff do a marvelous job with both drinks and dinner service. If you haven’t tried one yet, I wholeheartedly recommend you try one of Angela’s Brandy Alexanders. They are not only very tasty but show off her artistic side as well. While early in his tenure, Garrett Wagoner is keeping the kitchen humming and turning out good quality meals. No event is too large or too small for this fantastic team. Tony Shepherd, Virginia Pollet and Eric Wingler get kudos for keeping the house and its facilities in ship shape and in perfect working order. You may not have noticed but the air conditioning system has recently been rebalanced so that the dining room is no longer as chilly as before, and they are constantly working to make things better for all of us. Tony is a man of many talents who just makes things happen. Becky, Stephanie, Brittany and Allie serve with smiling faces in the Grille and their can-do attitudes make breakfasts and lunches a pleasure. Even when they get hit with 20 orders at once, they make it happen without complaint. Please make it a point to thank these ladies for their fine service and especially for the banana pudding! Finally, our administrative staff of Mike West, Donna Moore, and Barbie Blankenship see to it that all our ducks are in a row. While we couldn’t make it without a GM, we all know that the real work is done by Donna and Barbie. This HUMMER doesn’t just happen. Yes, the

    HMCC LGA NEWS

The 2018 Golf Season is well under way. The LGA has had two great events so far this year. Our Diamonds, Divas and Divots Invitational on June 11 was a rousing success with 80 ladies from nearby clubs coming to play on our beautiful course. Thanks to Cathy Williams and her committee, Jenny Braswell and Dana Caudle, who did a brilliant job in the organization and execution of this tournament. And, of course, thanks to Nathan for having the golf course in great shape despite all the rain and to Todd, Tim and Quincy for making the golf run smoothly. On June 24th we held our Bonnie and Clyde Shootout, our first Ladies Choice Tournament in several years. It was a fun outing with 52 people taking part. Thanks to all the ladies who picked a partner and participated. Coming up July 11 and 12 is our Wonder Woman Ladies Member Guest. It’s a two-day event this year with a Par 3 tournament, fashion show and lunch on Wednesday followed by our traditional cocktail party and an optional Ladies Night dining at the Club. Thursday brings breakfast, the tournament, lunch and awards. You may take part in both days or just one, if you so desire. It’s going to be a fantastic, fun time so make sure you don’t miss it! We want it to be the best Member Guest to date and lots of participation will help make it so! If you need a guest, please contact Jenny Braswell.

Repairing Ball MarksRepairing Ball MarksRepairing Ball MarksRepairing Ball Marks

Your Golf Course Maintenance staff and the Greens Committee ask that you please take the time to repair your ball marks. As a general rule, a ball mark repaired within 10 minutes will heal with a smooth surface within two to three days. An unrepaired ball mark may take as long as three weeks to heal, but the result will be an uneven surface. Thanks for your help in making our greens the best that they can be by following the steps below:

Here are the steps recommended by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America on how to properly repair divot holes on a green. Step #1: Take your ball mark repair tool and insert the prongs into the turf at the edge of the depression. Note: Do NOT insert the prongs into the depression itself, but at the rim of the depression. Step #2: The next step is to push the edge of the ball mark toward the center, using your ball mark repair tool in a "gentle twisting motion," in the words of the GCSAA. This is the step where golfers who incorrectly "repair" ball marks usually mess up. Many golfers believe the way to "fix" a ball mark is to insert the tool at an angle, so the prongs are beneath the center of the crater, and then to use the tool as a lever to push the bottom of the ball mark back up even with the surface. Do not do this! Pushing the bottom of the depression upward only tears the roots, and kills the grass. Step #3: Once you've worked around the rim of the ball mark with your repair tool, pushing the grass toward the center, there's only one thing left to do: Gently tamp down the repaired ball mark with your putter smooth the putting surface.

  • GM and the board members write the articles, but you would never read them if not for Donna. Barbie is responsible for getting member bills out (yes, I hate them too) and for paying our vendors, but without her dedication club finances would be a mess. These are just two examples of the many functions these ladies perform. We’re lucky to have such amazing staff. A resounding “Thank you” is due all these wonderful people. We get to enjoy the mountain lifestyle without a care in the world because of these amazing folks. Let them know you appreciate them. Finally, we have a need for some 1, 3, and 5 pound hand weights. If anyone has some lying around that are not being used, we would love to use them in the exercise facility. Please let me or Donna know and we’ll make arrangements to get them from you.

Until next month, Yon Demmink, House Chairman

July is a very busy time around the Club from a social prospective. . .

Don’t miss the annual 4th of July Golf Cart Parade and Cook-out. It is always great fun to see which group comes up with the most creative golf cart decorations and the buffet is always wonderful. The LGA is holding their annual Member Guest on July 11th and 12th. There will be some new twists and turns to this tournament along with a Luncheon and Fashion Show sponsored by D&B Designs, The Posh Fox and our very own Golf Shop. Our lady golfers and their guests should have a wonderful time at these events and what a great way to showcase our Club and surrounding businesses. On July 14th we are going to have a Big Band Dinner and Dance. The band is “Elkin Big Band” from Elkin, which we have heard great reviews about, and it should be a good change of pace from our usual music offerings. Mark your calendars for the upcoming Hummingbird Classic Member Guest on August 2, 3 and 4th and our Employee Appreciation Dinner on August 12th. More information will be forthcoming on these events, as well as other exciting August happenings.

See you at the Club! The Social Committee

We would like to ask for your help with reservations, please. It would be a tremendous help to Angela if you make your reservations as early as possible. This allows Angela to properly schedule the wait staff based on the number of reservations on the book. Last minute reservations often make it difficult for her to find someone able to work.

Members; Please allow me to focus on other exciting projects your BOD and a very special committee have been working on. I won't "steel the thunder" from the article below written by one of the committee members, please read and celebrate these terrific projects for the GOOD OF THE CLUB!. My role with this committee is as a Board liaison to help facilitate Board approval for the recommended projects.

Thanks & please read on, Rich Kaplan Roads, Security & Landscape Chair BOD Liaison to the Living Tree/Legacy Fund Committee

    Living Tree/Legacy Fund Committee

    Dear Members,

Several years ago, our group recognized and started talking regarding our club’s amenities and capital needs. In reviewing how many other clubs have transformed their offerings to appeal to all types of members, we have been working on a plan to update and improve High Meadows. The Living Tree/Legacy Fund Committee was formed and governance was established for the Committee to make recommendations to the Board for their ultimate decisions.

Enhancing member value and attracting new members are the objectives of these efforts to make our club financially sound long term.

We have already received financial support from about 6 members which allows us to take action starting very soon with 2 Board already approved projects:

Clubhouse deck revitalization including new flooring, installing 1 gas fire pit with 2 additional gas lines for future pits, more comfortable furniture, adding retractable awnings, removing bench and installing new handrails to meet code/improve safety. In addition, the plan will include extending the deck around the clubhouse to access near the bar door. We feel these significant enhancements will allow greater utilization for all our food and beverage operations and take advantage of the beautiful view the deck offers.

Pool - chain link fence will be removed and replaced with a wrought iron fence with rock columns. Pool deck area concrete will be extended to allow more room for chairs, events at the pool, etc. Enhanced lighting will be done too as this is one of the first things people see when arriving at the club.

So, these are exciting projects that have already been approved and funded from our Living Tree/Legacy Fund. Our plan will be to continue to gain additional member support for other projects to meet these objectives. Please feel free to contact anyone on our Committee if you have additional thoughts or ideas.

  • To the HMCC Membership:

As prescribed by the By-laws, I have formed a Nominating Committee to select three nominees for the

Board of Directors, which will be voted on at the Fall Membership Meeting. The members of the

Committee are: Allen Williams, Paul Perlik, Sue Talley, Charley Tucker, Vicky Cox, Bob Cowan, and Bill

    Burleigh.

The committee asks the membership to submit names of suggested candidates which will be considered

by the committee in the process. Before you submit a name, it would be helpful if you ask the person if

they would be willing to serve if nominated. Please send your suggestions to me at the email address

below or to Donna in the office. The committee must complete it’s work by August 14th, so we would

    appreciate your prompt response.

    Thanks for your thoughtful consideration
