A nother year has flown by and 2018 is just about in the books. Now is an appropriate time to re-cap where we are as a Local. 2018 was a productive year for UAW Local 1853. We were extremely proud to have new negotiated and ratified agreements at several of our amalgamated units. GM, Ryder, AFV, CLI all have new agreements this year, we anticipate Leadec to have a ratification vote early 2019. We saw substantial growth in our overall membership adding members in GM, Ryder, Leadec, Magna, CLI and AFV. Our Local boasts a membership of approximately 10,000 members including retirees. Fortunately, our plant builds the popular XT5, Acadia, as well as adding additional products enabling us to add a 3rd shift. This 3rd shift allowed Local 1853 to welcome UAW members from facilities that are unfortunately losing work. It is hard to leave your home; hopefully our new members are adjusting and feel welcome in Spring Hill. Thank you to our International Union for our negotiated transfer agreements. These agreements have benefited all of us at one time or another. Our standing Committees have been extremely active again this year organizing events that have helped our members, their families and the surrounding community. Our Community Service committee had a very busy year and helped 1853 families in need throughout the year. Gate collections raised over $8,000 benefitting those who suffered losses from the devastating hurricanes. Planned Trunk or Treat at Halloween and this Christmas, organized their largest present collection ever, making Angel Tree kids happy. Many of their fund raisers rely on donations from our always generous membership, thank you! The Recreation Committee pulled off another successful Fall Festival. Sponsored a golf tournament where our members had fellowship and fun. Most recently restarted an old tradition of having Christmas at the hall for 1853 kids. Over 460 kids had a blast making decorations, visiting with Santa and petting live animals including camels. The Veterans Committee was extremely involved again this year. They adopted 5 families for Thanksgiving meals, 7 families for Christmas meals, including presents for the kids. They continued The Larry Robinson sweater drive delivering sweaters collected from our members to disabled Veterans. They also donated to the Dark Horse Lodge, a camp for combat Veterans suffering from PTSD. The veterans continued to honor our Local 1853 heroes through veteran of the month, presenting them flags flown over the capitol each month at our union meetings. They held formal flag ceremonies for Memorial and Veterans Day laying wreaths at the 1853 veteran memorial out front of the hall. The Women’s Committee adopted an under privileged school in Pulaski this year providing school supplies they so desperately needed, worked hard to provide 115 lap quilts and sweaters to Veterans. They participated in community service through a habitat project. Volunteered with the United way and breast cancer drives along with many other great activities too numerous to mention. We must also recognize our CAP committee who worked hard through phone banking and door knocking to support labor candidates in 2018 elections. Our Civil Rights Committee participated in Regional events and performed thorough, timely investigations throughout the year. Union Label Committee provided information on union made products and participated with CAP activities. Thank you to all of our Committees and volunteers for your hard work. Your efforts to help our members and the surrounding community are sincerely appreciated. Our retiree membership continues to grow in numbers with another 69 joining the ranks of 1853 retired workers in 2018. Retirees continue to hold meetings on the first Monday of the month at 10am. They also have several social events throughout the year with the most recent being the retiree Christmas party. This event had over 300 happy attendees celebrating Christmas with old friends over good food and dancing. The Body Shop Athletic Club at the hall continues to grow and is self-sustaining as customers enthusiasm builds around added improvements. 2019 will be a great year for Local 1853 and Spring Hill Manufacturing. Our members can see our plant transforming in preparation for more new products. Spring Hill is once again a premiere manufacturing facility for General Motors in Region 8. On behalf of Local 1853 Executive Board, we would like to wish all of our members a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Please take time to relax with your family, rest up! And come back safe in 2019. The New Year will continue to bring an exciting times for Local 1853 and Spring Hill.
