Principal’s Message

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our new students, families and staff. We have 14 new staff and I would like to thank Georgia Harvey and Brodie Neuwert for producing the great introductions to these staff in this bumper issue newsletter.

“Don’t ask students what job they want, ask them what problem they want to solve.” (Jaime Casap) 2017 will focus on the General Capabilities of the Australian Curriculum particularly on “Critical and Creative Thinking “and “Personal and Social Capability”. In a world of “alternative truths” young people need to be confident in their ability to find credible information and use it to find solutions. Staff are working on the directions provided last year by the External Review – higher expectations, consistency and engagement to provide opportunities for students to explore learning more deeply. We encourage you to engage in your child’s education and a very effective way to do this is to discuss the days learning with your child(ren). Have a rule no “yes or no” answers so they have to talk to you. Questions like: “what did you learn today?”, “why did you learn it?”, “What went well today?”, “What worried you?”, “What events are coming up?” It is important that students are given the opportunity to risk “not getting it right”, so they find areas they need to work on. Encouragement and guidance are great; doing it for them may result in “learned helplessness”. Resilience - the ability to bounce back which requires grit and the ability to decide on how to respond to challenges, will continue to be a focus to support all students to develop leadership and become the instruments of change in our communities.

Catastrophic Fire Days

Reminder: If catastrophic fire days are called, school buses will not run. The CFS advise DECD by 4pm if there is a catastrophic level for the following day. If this occurs bus companies will be notified and will not run. We will post on Facebook and phone all families with students on buses. If the danger arises during the day the school will put the Emergency Management Plan into action.

New Bushfires and Your Child’s School or

Preschool A Guide for Families

Parents are encouraged to access a new brochure which provides important information about what our schools/preschools will do on a catastrophic fire day or in the event of a fire. Bushfires can occur at any time during summer. It’s important that our families understand our Site Emergency Plan are prepared and have a plan in place for their family when these situations arise. If there is a bushfire emergency while children are onsite we will keep them safe until the danger has cleared even if this is outside of normal school hours. For a copy of the brochure visit www.decd.sa.gov.au and search ‘bushfire brochure’.

Senior Secondary Student Support

Open Access/Distance Education allows our students access to a full curriculum and is great for developing independent study skills and habits. YAS wants to ensure that students have some support to keep them on track when studying independently. A mentor has been assigned to all students studying via OA/DE. There is mutual obligation between the student and the mentor - both are expected to initiate catch-ups to discuss progress, issues or general support. The catch up is likely to be face to face but could be via email. The expectation is that there is a catch up at least fortnightly however it is likely to be more often. Mentors are expected to check the OA Daymap to check assignments due and results, students are expected to show their mentors their OA Daymap. If there are concerns, the mentor will raise them with the Senior School team and contact with the family will be made.

Year 11’s have scheduled supervised study and can also seek support from the supervising teacher. Year 11’s do not have any “unscheduled time”. Year 12’s have study lines, they do not have to check in with the supervised study teacher but can use the space and ask for assistance from the supervised study teacher or arrange to meet subject teachers during this time

School Photos

Some families have expressed concern over the short time-line for photo payments. We have changed the time for photos for a number of reasons. We have combined ID card photos and photos so the photographers only need to come out once. We have spoken with the company and they will accept payment until the 2nd March for photos. Photos can also be ordered at any time but after the 2nd March they will incur a “reorder price”. We apologise for the short notice and hope the 2nd March deadline assists families in managing photo payments.

Tuesday 28th February, Yorketown Oval 11am – 2pm

All students will attend this display and see the DJRT with Ryan Story. Students will be making welcome banners etc to brighten up the fence line on Stansbury Road. If you have any materials – banners, old sheets you can donate, please contact child’s home group teacher. All of the community is welcome to attend the event (see flier below).

Coordinator

Welcome back to a busy new school year! What a scorching start we have had. Literally and figuratively. I am really happy to welcome Ben Braund to our Wellbeing team. We will be working together on student voice as well as wellbeing initiatives in the school and community. We heard a number of nominees speak, all vying for the roles of Middle and Junior School Captains. There were some excellent speeches and I was really proud, listening to these amazing young people putting themselves forward to serve the YAS community. A big congratulations to Jessica Timms and James Thompson who won the positions of captain in the Middle School. And well done to Victoria Savage and Luke Thompson for winning the Junior School Captaincy.

Emma Oliver Student Wellbeing Coordinator

From the Junior School

Hello and welcome to the 2017 school year. I

hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable summer break and that you are ready to tackle the busy year ahead.

Firstly, thank you to all of the staff, students and families who have gone out of their way to welcome me to the school over the last few weeks, your efforts have been much appreciated and I am looking forward to meeting more families soon.

There have been a few changes to the Junior School this year with Andrew Hayman teaching

the year 4/5 class, Margie Secker teaching the 2/3 class and Stacey Bishop and myself teaching the R/1 class. Wendy Rushbrook and Al Murdock are both teaching two days in the Junior School across all three classes. All students appear to have settled in well and are working hard already.

The term calendar is looking very busy already and in week five the Junior School students will attend Surf Safety Days. The Year 5 students will be travelling to Berry Bay on Monday 27th February and the Year 3 and 4 students will head to Berry Bay on Tuesday 28th February.

The Reception and Year 1 and 2 students will go to Bluff Beach on Friday March 3rd for their Surf Safety Day. Please return consent forms and payment promptly and if your child has a Health Care Plan, ensure that you have provided the school with an updated version so that they can attend.

We are always on the lookout for volunteers to help out with reading and other classroom activities in the Junior School. If you are available to help in any way please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

The Junior School team are planning an enjoyable and productive year of learning, teaching and fun and are looking forward to working closely with families to make 2017 a successful year for our students.

Getting to know the new Staff at Yorketown Area School 2017 Article Georgia Harvey, Photos Brodie Neuwert Mrs Walsh, the new Deputy Principal, has previously studied at university to do a Bachelor Arts Degree in

Aboriginal and Australian Studies, she has completed a teaching degree and is currently also completing her Masters in Educational Leadership. She describes herself as determined, believes in social justice and also making a difference in education. Mrs Walsh’s interests outside of school are gardening, her four children and five grandkids. She thinks that it is wonderful to have the opportunity to influence kids’ lives and finds it amazing that you can give positive input and watch children grow. Mrs Walsh said that the greatest success she has had as a teacher is seeing a group of kids go from not believing in themselves to them now being year 12 students who will get their SACE this year. “That’s

my greatest achievement, just seeing those kids grow and getting confidence in themselves as learners.”

Mrs Rose, the Junior School Coordinator, has been teaching for eight years. She describes herself as kind, dedicated, persistent, fun and loving. Mrs Rose believes that the qualities of an excellent teacher are passion, “Being passionate about students and helping them learn is the main one,” along with not giving up and being persistent. Mrs Rose expressed that her teaching peers have been fabulous throughout her short career and have helped to set a good example, “They have pushed me to undertake lots of training and take on challenges and have really steered me in the right direction, they’ve also given me the opportunity to follow my passion in literacy and to help my students to succeed. “Mrs Rose’s interests outside of school are watching sport, reading, spending time with family and friends and she is really starting to enjoy fishing.

Mrs Bishop, one of our new teachers, describes herself as fun and keen to learn and make a difference. Her interests outside of school are netball, basketball, kids, family and fitness. Mrs Bishop said that she has always wanted to be a teacher and she would set her teddies up, read stories to them and teach them from a young age. By being a teacher she hopes to make a difference and inspire kids to achieve good things. Mrs Bishop said that she likes to have open communication with the parents of her students and that they are welcome to come and chat to her anytime.

Ms Stagg, a new teacher, has completed her Bachelor in Education (primary to middle school) and has wanted to be a teacher her whole life. She believes that the qualities of an excellent teacher include creative ways in delivering lessons and developing good relations with her students. Her interests out of school are watching a lot of TV and annoying her cat. She describes herself as resilient, honest, logical, inquisitive and positive.

Ben Braund, a youth worker, defines himself as unique, fun, patient, creative and an incredible sportsman. Ben says that his strengths working with youth are relatable, good fun and compassionate and he describes his style as a youth worker, unique as he tries lots of different things, he goes with the flow and is probably very unique to most. When asked about his experiences working with youth, he said, “It’s different every day, it’s good fun and I like helping young people achieve the best they can in life.” Ben’s interests out of school are footy, basketball and his involvement in the church. He is getting married soon so a lot of his time away from school revolves around wedding invitations, flowers and cake (he loves cake).

Julie Johnson, a new member in the front office, had been working at both Edithburgh and Pt Vincent Primary School for the last 18 months. When both schools closed at the end of last year, Julie said that she was fortunate to get a job here at YAS. Her interests outside of school include friends, family, outdoors, camping, the beach and shopping (“I love a bit of retail therapy.”) Julie believes that the most difficult aspect of the education system today is wanting to make a difference and sometimes feeling as though you can’t do enough. She says five things that best describe her are, hardworking, loyal, caring, fun and tolerant. Julie’s favourite part of her job is the people that she works with and building relationships with peers.

Ms Felgenhaur, the new art teacher for Term 1, says that her interests outside of school are football (big Crows fan), cooking, friends and going to the movies. Ms Felgenhaur motivates her students by undertaking studies such as social and pop culture. She says that the most difficult aspect of teaching today is that there is so much to know and you don’t realise this until you start teaching. Ms Felgenhaur’s greatest success as a teacher has been seeing the realisation on a student’s face when they make something and are proud of it. She also said that a visitor to the school could expect to see lots of hands on projects happening in her classroom.

Ms Smith, also a new teacher, likes sport, going to the gym, playing netball, she likes getting out and about, going to the beach and getting active. Five things that best describe Ms Smith are loud, funny, active, bogan and creative. In her time at Yorketown Area School she hopes to develop in her science, be the best teacher she can be and make kids smile. When I asked her what skill she has as a teacher that she would like to bring to YAS, she replied with, “Differentiation and that basically means to be able to set a task at three different skill levels so no matter what level a student is at whether they like to challenge themselves or if they are not quite there, they feel they can succeed in my classroom.”

Mrs Fehring, our new FLO teacher, says that her interests outside of school are swimming, being at the beach, doing creative things, art projects, sewing, reading, watching movies and she is currently learning the ukulele which she thinks is lots of fun. Mrs Fehring previously attended University for six months until she withdrew and went to TAFE instead, where she completed a Diploma in Hospitality Management. She travelled overseas and then went back to study teaching and majored in History. Her greatest success as a teacher has been surviving her first year out of university and hearing from a school that she used to work at that students still talk about her, whether that be good or bad. When asked whether or not she takes advantage of the community resources to enhance her teaching she replied, “Yes, I have another job running community programs for adults with disabilities. A lot of the teaching practices overlap because there are learning opportunities in this role as well. My husband works for the Department of Environment so he has a lot of resources and ideas that I can use when teaching. The local council also has great information that I access and I am hoping the group project I’m doing with the FLO class is going to have a lot of community involvement.” Mrs Fehring describes herself as friendly, curious, resourceful, kind and funny.

Mr Witcomb, our new senior school teacher, describes himself as musical (loves the guitar) and loves hiking, skiing, playing piano and guitar with friends and just hanging with friends. He attended University, studying music for three years, education for one year and teaching music last year in NSW. Mr Witcomb’s personal strengths which help in his teaching are, being relatable and friendly. He hopes that students don’t see him as a big meanie and they will come and talk to him. The thing he likes most about his teaching career is seeing students at the start of the year not knowing what they can do and then seeing what they are capable of at the end of the year.

Ms Boylon, a new teacher and librarian, defines her teaching style as building up respect and relationships so the students can be happy to learn. Her favourite thing to do outside of school is go to the beach and anything else to do with the ocean. Ms Boylon said that she describes herself as creative, friendly and humorous. She is an avid historian, loves reading and prefers teaching art as everyone has different interpretations of things. She believes that the biggest challenge facing students today is social media.

Mrs Price, our new librarian assistant and student support officer has been working at a library in Leigh Creek for three years and has also previously worked in a library at Bute. She describes herself as having a broad sense of humour, good communication skills, she will give anything a try and is professional and outgoing. Mrs Price loves the beach, going on walks and yoga. Three assets she thinks she can bring to Yorketown Area School as a library assistant is efficiency, good service and organisation. She believes that it is very important to practise good interpersonal skills as a library assistant as she is the first point of contact when someone is in need of help or direction and providing good service will encourage library patrons to return.

Brenton Burt, also a new student support officer, says that the main people who have been a big influence in his career path have been the ones who suggested that he has a natural ability to instruct and teach people of all ages and capabilities. When Brenton was asked why he wanted to be involved in the education system he said, “As a student he remembers his support officer and how she made learning fun. This then made school more comfortable and enjoyable for me to attend. It had a huge impact on my education and learning. I volunteered in an SSO position last year and found it very beneficial for the student and also very self-satisfying. It has given me a new direction in my career path and I hope to continue to broaden my knowledge and see all students succeed. Brenton describes himself as positive, enthusiastic, disciplined, fit, healthy and empathetic. His interests out of school include, personal training, all sports, health and fitness, music and good food. He maintains good communication skills with students by being empathetic and understanding of all capabilities, always listening and showing interest in what the student has to say.

Jackie Way, a student support officer, hopes to bring different resources and perhaps alternative ways of teaching to Yorketown Area School and most importantly help students get the best learning outcome they possibly can. Mrs Way said that former teachers have influenced her career by being good educators and being flexible in their teaching approach. Her interests out of school involve football, the beach, cooking and watching the cricket. When asked to describe herself, Mrs Way said she’s flexible, a good listener, finds resources easily and is fair and helpful towards others.
