Dear Parents,

Welcome back to a great academic year! This year, as the Curriculum Coach, I will be collaborating with the teachers in the implementation of the new English/Language Arts and Mathematics Standards. As required by the State of Alaska Department of Education, the standards need to be fully implemented by 2015. At Fronteras, we are working diligently to meet the new Alaska State Standards and the new Grade Level Expectations. Previously, Alaska’s standards were reported to be weaker than the standards of other states, with the standards beginning in 3rd grade and stopping at 10th grade, and only having 1/3 of Alaskans proficient on National assessments.

The State of Alaska did not adopt the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Therefore, Alaska is not bound to accept the standards in their entirety and is allowed to change them in the future. The new standards, from Kindergarten through 12th grade, are equal in rigor to CCSS to ensure that graduates are better prepared for college education, technical training, and careers after high school. It is important to understand that the standards do not tell teachers how to teach nor place limits on local curriculum. As a Spanish Immersion school, some of the challenges have been the consistent use of a curriculum and the use of appropriate material to teach lessons.

With the new standards in place, Fronteras is at the vanguard:Each teacher has received the curriculum required per grade. Weekly meetings, with team groups and on individual basis, to review curriculum implementation are taking place.Spanish material, appropriate to the needs of our students, is being created to assist instruction.Co-teaching among teachers, tutors and the curriculum office is taking place, in both English and Spanish subjects.

The standards will be taught and the grade level expectations will be met. This is going to be a fantastic year, full of learning, growth and personal success. It is an honor to be part of it.

Sincerely,

Rosa Lilliana TanerInstructional CoachFronteras Spanish Immersion Charter School

collection of cash at our school. matsu.schoolcashonline.com

Please sign up for school

LOST and NEED TO BE FOUND:A sandwich-sized ziplock bag was left on the playground after school. It contained a Yellowstone Junior Ranger Patch and a gold star Junior Ranger badge. These items mean a lot to one little boy who earned them over the summer vacation. He would really like them returned to the school. If your child was out playing or was in a club after school please inquire with them about this lost item. Would you check with your student, look in your car or their backpack for these items? We would really appreciate your time. If you find these items, please drop them off at Fronteras in either building.

Pizza Thursday! So what's the deal with Pizza Thursday? Well, parent volunteer Milly Flack serves

as the organizer for this fundraiser. Proceeds from pizza sales go to support the middle school trip to Puerto Rico.

Milly has been at Fronteras for 7 yrs with daughters Aleyna and Daniela. If you have questions regarding Pizza

Thursday you can contact Milly at [email protected]. One or two (depending on how many you purchased) slices are delivered

to students classrooms each Thursday. Pizza is supplied by Pizza Galley.

Our 4th year participating in Battle of the Books (BOB) will be starting in an after-school club format beginning second quarter. Would you like to volunteer in the Fronteras Library?

Our school does not have a librarian, we use parent

volunteers to assist with library classes. Classes will meet

once a week for 30 minutes, ideally with 2 parents for each

class. Classroom volunteers will help students choose

books, check books in and out on the computer, and read

stories to the students. We would like to find parents who

can commit to coming each week if possible. It is a great

way to stay involved with our school and see your child

during their school day. All hours count toward volunteer

hours.

Can't commit to a class but love working with books?

The library volunteers also assist with:

• Shelving books

• Keeping the library clean and tidy

• Battle of the Books

• Adding new books into our collection by using the

computer and bar-coding

• Book Fairs

• Labeling books

Contact Jody if you are interested in helping out.
