Dan Cozzetto Head Coach
Not just on this level, but likely any level in the Arizona college coaching ranks . If you’re looking for a head coach to turn around your college football program, once the resume’ of Dan Cozzetto hits your hands, it’s unlikely you need to look much
further, since his is more well-known among Arizona College coaching circles than nearly anyone’s over the last three decades . And yet, with his 36 years of coaching experience-which features 32 years as an assistant at the NCAA Division I level for various schools, Cozzetto stepped onto the Bears’ Football sideline for the first time last August as a head coach for the first time ever . Cozzetto’s coaching journey began at his alma mater-right after he completed his playing career (as a tight end, linebacker and offensive lineman) at the University of Idaho in 1979 . Cozzetto spent a dozen years with the Vandals, moving his way up the coaching change until finally winding up as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator his last two years, and helping Idaho win 5 Big Sky Championships . From there, Cozzetto would spend the next 13 years of his life making several Pac-10 programs bowl-worthy . Cozzetto went from Idaho to the University of California, leading the Bears to Copper Bowl and Citrus Bowl Championship in successive years . He then followed Bruce Snyder (who hired him at Cal-Berkeley) to Arizona State University as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, and helped the Sun Devils go undefeated in conference play to win the Pac-10 title, and reach the Rose Bowl for only the second time in their storied history in 1997; then took the most potent rushing attack in ASU history (172 rushing yards per game) to an Aloha Bowl victory two years later . After seven years in Tempe, Cozzetto longed for the Pacific Northwest again (he’s born and raised in the state of Washington), so he reunited with his former boss
at Idaho, Dennis Erickson, as Erickson’s running backs coach at Oregon State, where he helped take them to a Pac-10 title, and a pair of bowl appearances (including a Fiesta Bowl win over Notre Dame in 2001) in three years . The move to his home state became complete when he joined Rick Neuheisel’s staff at the University of Washington for the next two years . Erickson gave Cozzetto his first chance at pro coaching in 2004 when he hired Dan as tight ends and offensive line coach for the San Francisco 49ers . After one season at that level, the Cozzetto-Erickson combo returned to the college ranks, and returned to a pair of familiar stops: Idaho in ’06, then Arizona State for the next two years . After taking the Devils to the Holiday Bowl (after winning a share of another Pac-10 crown), Cozzetto returned to UW for five seasons at offensive line coach and run game coordinator . Cozzetto spent the 2014 season as run game coordinator for the FXFL’s Boston Brawlers, but longed for a job in Arizona, and was fielding offers until the PC job opened up . Year 1 saw the debut of the 6th-best passing offense in the NJCAA last year .
A graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education from the University of Idaho, Cozzetto and his wife, Debbie, have finally decided to make Arizona their permanent home, and will celebrate their 16th year of marriage in the Grand Canyon State . The Cozzettos are the proud parents of 4 grown children: Adrian (40), Rachel (38), Ryan (33), and Tara (29); as well as two grandchildren .

2016 Season Outlook
The earmarks of a new era: 1) a head coach and assistant head coach whose previous success absolutely blew away the coaching staffs of any other WSFL Football program; 2) a new attitude and atmosphere that even those that could absolutely care less about Bears’ Football around campus noticed, and responded; 3) a high-powered offense that averaged nearly 40 points during the 2015 season, and kept fans in the stands and on GoBears SportsNet on the edges of their seats throughout the season . Those three are what everyone hoped for and were gratified to see when Dan Cozzetto and Robin Pflugrad stepped on the Hogan Field at Hoy Stadium field for the first time last year to lead the program .
The fourth earmark of that ‘new era’ feeling was one that absolutely no one expected: 4) wins are hard to come by in the first year .
With that said, though, expectations are still through the roof for the 2016 Bears, and it’s not just that the Cozzetto/Pflugrad tandem has a great track record of spinning losing teams into consistent winners . First of all, while the wins weren’t forthcoming in 2015, the aerial attack was non-stop… so much so that the Bears had the 6th-most potent passing offense IN THE NATION . They accomplished it without a consistent running game, and they think they’ve solved that problem with incoming recruits Jeremiah Cornist and Pavone Meyers to handle that load . They’ve also shored up the offensive line in front of them, since returning starters Chris May, Daniel Cruz and Daniel Reyes all have a year of experience under their belts, and have wowed the coaches during spring and summer drills . And for that ‘aerial attack’, wide receiver Jaeran Burch and tight end Brandon King both return from 2015, with redshirt quarterback Eric Kump, ’15 backup Josh Eckley and California transfer Brett Hollingsworth set to battle it out to see who replaces the graduated All-WSFL QB Nick Duckworth .
The defense was a season-long work in progress in 2015, and Cozzetto has brought in new defensive coordinator Todd Williamson to make sure it’s a much quicker learning curve in 2016 . Williamson has more than a few returning starters to rely on, and the flashes of brilliance that guys like linebacker Kahlil Gulley, defensive end Dillon Proby, and defensive backs Marcus Nash and Spencer Knox showed a year ago are expected to happen much more this fall . Pressing them for starting jobs are highly touted recruits Macarius Blount and Keevile Brown .
So, while the official ‘time for a change’ happened last year for Cozzetto’s regime, and the fans certainly saw evidence of the move in the right direction, there’s still essential puzzle pieces that Cozzetto is impatiently sliding into place to get the scoreboard and the standings moving in the right direction for his Bears . “We took our lumps last year, and I will never get used to having that happen . Neither will our staff nor our players,” said Cozzetto . “We’ve already seen evidence of that in the strength of our recruiting class, and with the climbing level of talent that is pushing each other for starting jobs . Our fans will see evidence of that in exciting fashion this fall .”

2016 Coaching Staff
Robin Pflugrad Assistant Head Coach
Robin Pflugrad begins his 2nd year as part of easily the most experienced coaching duo in the Western States Football League . When Dan Cozzetto was hired to be a head coach for the first time in his 36-year coaching career in January 2015 at PC, he
immediately thought of Pflugrad and his 33 years of experience to be his assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, and reunited with him as a coach for the first time in 15 years . While this is Pflugrad’s first coaching job on the community college level, it returns him to his roots, since that’s the level Pflugrad’s college playing career started at as a wide receiver at Mt . Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon . From there, though, Pflugrad has gone the four-year route for playing and coaching for more than three decades, first winding up his playing days at Portland State University (catching passes from future Cardinals’ great Neil Lomax), then (like Cozzetto) starting his coaching career at his alma mater as soon as he hung up his helmet for the final time . Pflugrad spent five of the next six years on the PSU coaching staff (with the other year spent back in Eugene as a varsity high school coach) before following PSU’s head coach, Don Read, when Read took the head job at the University of Montana . The move proved to be one of the best of Pflugrad’s career-not only because he spent the next nine years of his career moving up the ladder from coaching wideouts, quarterbacks and rushers to becoming assistant head coach for the final five years there; but that it would also lay the groundwork for his first head coaching job years later .
The next step in Pflugrad’s career would be pivotal for a few reasons . First, it was the move to Arizona State University’s coaching staff, which put Pflugrad on a staff that would win a Pac-10 title and reach the Rose Bowl in his second year there . Second, it would pair Pflugrad and Cozzetto on the same offensive staff for the next three years . Third, since Pflugrad-
as the Sun Devils’ recruiting coordinator-would bring in some of the top recruiting classes in the Pac-10 over that stretch, it opened doors for Pflugrad, such as becoming the assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator at Washington State after ASU (three straight 10-win seasons and an ’03 Rose Bowl berth); and returning to his home state as a wide receiver coach at the University of Oregon (making the Ducks the conference’s top offense) . Finally, Pflugrad got the chance to be a head coach when he returned to Montana in 2009 as an assistant, then moved up to the head job a year later . In two years, Pflugrad’s teams won 18 games, including an 11-win season in ’11 (one of Montana’s best seasons ever), and not only earned Pflugrad Big Sky Coach of the Year honors, but also made him a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award . Despite high praise both inside and outside of the organization, Pflugrad was back on the job market three months later, and took a year off before joining Weber State University as their offensive coordinator in 2013, and then jumping at the chance to reunite with Cozzetto last year . That reunion resulted in the 6th-most potent passing attack in the nation for the Bears last year,
Pflugrad earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Portland State University . Pflugrad and his wife, Marlene, have watched their two children follow their father into the sports world, since their daughter, Amanda, is a sports broadcaster with the NBA’s Boston Celtics; and their son, Aaron, a former standout receiver at Arizona State, in his 2nd year as a full-time assistant at Northern Arizona University after spending 3 years as a grad assistant at his alma mater .
