OVERVIEW Welcome to your studies in Cert IV TESOL. Successful completion of this course will earn you a recognised teaching qualification in Australia for teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. This course provides an introduction to theories and techniques for teaching English. You will analyse the needs of learners and have the opportunity to design lessons and resources to meet their learning needs. You will have the opportunity to synthesise your learning through teaching practice opportunities and project work.

TEACHING MODELectures will cover the core principles and are followed by practical work within the tutorials to ensure students have grasped the concepts. This participation in-group work and class discussions within tutorial sessions will be imperative in students’ acquisition and application of skills and knowledge. There will be a mix of short assignments and in-class exercises to be completed in this course as part of the continuous assessment. The project/case study will meet competencies in NyRD, NFNZ, NFPA and RyMS. In addition you will plan and deliver 6 hours of lesson content at varying levels.Students are expected to attend all lectures and tutorials. There are twenty three (3) contact hours per week in this course. Students are expected to complete an additional eight (8) to ten (10) hours of their own independent study each week.

Course Overview

ACCESS Both native speaking and non- native speaking applicants are able to undertake this qualification. They are however required to submit evidence of English language competency of no less than IELTS 6.0 That is they must have an awareness of language and a competence in English both written and spoken that enables them to undertake the course.Applicants will usually be university undergraduates or graduates or to at least have tertiary level entry qualifications.All applicants are interviewed individually and prior to the interview must complete a Pre-Course Assessment Task. The aim of the Interview is to inform applicants about the course and to assess both the suitability of the applicant for the course and the suitability of the course to their career plans.

Successful applicants will demonstrate at interview and in pre-interview tasks:• An appropriate awareness of the English language as it is used and its

difficulties for learners• An ability to analyse language at a suitable level; and to express ideas

clearly• A willingness to engage in discussion of teaching/learning approaches• Self-awareness and flexibility of approach• Willingness to interact. Listen and respond appropriately• An ability to take pressure and maintain positive rapport• A competence in written and spoken English that will enable them to

teach the language to students without causing errorStudents who are assessed in the pre-course assessment task as being weak in grammar must complete a pre-course module entitled “Introductory Grammar”

TIMEThe course is designed to be completed in eight weeks of full time study (265 hours). Phoenix will offer candidates the opportunity to apply for Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognition of Current Competence (RCC) for all or part of the course. This qualification can be completed as an end qualification however it is possible to offer it as the first stage of a package qualification and the applicant could proceed immediately onto the Graduate Diploma of TESOL

ON THE JOB TRAININGThe Practice Teaching module of this course requires “hands on” experience gained through involvement in classes for English language learners organised by Phoenix.

The Practice Teaching modules are completed in conjunction with the rest of the course by progressively exposing the students to practice teaching experiences as the course progresses.Participants complete a minimum of six hours supervised and assessed teaching practice to conform with the requirements of the national ELICOS Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) for a TESOL qualification.

PATHWAy AFTER QuALIFICATIONGraduates of the Certificate IV in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) are able to use their qualification to seek work in TESOL throughout the world. In Australia they fulfil the minimum requirements for a position teaching on an ELICOS course or on a DIAC funded program for migrants.The Certificate IV in TESOL is recognised by the National ELICOS Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) as the minimum qualification when packaged with a degree for employment in any Australian Intensive English Language School (ELICOS).The Certificate IV in TESOL is also recognised by many universities in Australia for advanced standing (credit) towards the Bachelor of Education (one unit -3 credit points). These universities are The university of New South Wales, Macquarie university, university of Canberra, university of Notre Dame, Murdoch university, Edith Cowan university and many more.Graduates of the Cert IV in TESOL are also able to move on to the Graduate Diploma of TESOL where they will have enhanced training for a TESOL position and will consequently have enhanced employment opportunities. They will have knowledge and skills that will enable them to fulfil positions of greater responsibility or specialisation in a TESOL context.

CANCELLATIONS, TRANSFERS & REFuNDS

Full Refundyou are entitled to a full refund of fees and charges where:

• you are not accepted into the course• you decline the offer of a place on the course in writing a minimum of 10

working days after receipt of offer letter. A $100 handling fee will be retained in this case.

• your written advice of withdrawal or transfer is received no later than 10 working days prior to course commencement. your $200 application fee is not refundable in this case.

• A substitute participant for the same couse is welcome at no extra charge.• A course/qualification or unit is cancelled or re-scheduled to a time

unsuitable to you;• you are not given a place due to maximum number of places being reached• you accept an offer of a place in a university. In this situation, you must

provide a copy of the letter of offer with you refund application.• If class is cancelled due to lack of applicant numbers, no available lecturer,

Pro Rata Refund• A pro rata refund of fees and charges may be approved if an applicant

withdraws for reasons of personal circumstances beyond their control. In all cases, relevant documentary evidence (for example, medical certificate) is required.

Refunds Following Re-markingStudents requesting a re-mark of their assessment should do so within four weeks of the date of publication of the results. Should a ‘Not yet Competent’ candidate achieve an outcome of ‘Competent’ on a re-marking of the assessment, the $25 remarking charge is to be refunded. The $50 charge for reporting on assessments is not refundable.
