Republic of the Philippines, an island country in Southeasth Asia consists of 7,107 islands in three main island groups namely Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The capital is Manila which is part of the National Capital Region. To the north of the Philippines lies Taiwan Island; to the west across the West Philippines Sea (South China Sea) is Viet Nam; to the southwest lies Malaysia across the Sulu Sea; to the south the Celebes Sea separates it from other islands of Indonesia; and to the east is the Philippine Sea. Its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and closeness to the equator make the country prone to earthquakes and typhoons, but also endow with abundant natural resources and some of the world's greatest biodiversity.
