Our Shared Passion for Music
Philanthropy Impact Report 2018 —2019
As we reach the coda of our landmark 10th Anniversary year, it’s wonderful to reflect on all that we have achieved together over the past decade and offer our sincere thanks for your inspiring commitment to Melbourne Recital Centre. Whether you have recently joined us, or have been a part of our generous community of supporters since we first opened our doors, your philanthropic gifts and sponsorship have enriched the lives of so many people in our community; from musicians and seasoned concert-goers, to those who are discovering the joy of music for the first time.
In 2018-19, more than 8,000 generous music lovers joined you in making gifts of all types that have ensured the continued vibrancy of the musical, artist development and learning and access programs that form the core of our work here at the Centre. Your support also played a crucial role in bringing to life several special 10th Anniversary initiatives, including a suite of 10 new music commissions, our $10 tickets access initiative for first time attendees, and the purchase of a new Steinway Model C grand piano for the Primrose Potter Salon. This past year also saw the launch of our new seat dedication program that provided 39 music lovers with a platform to express their deep connection to the Centre.
We have come a long way in our first 10 years, and the firm footing you have helped us establish means that we now look forward to our second decade with confidence and energy. We hope that you will join us as our journey continues.
Thank you for 10 years of inspired giving!

Piers Lane AO & Euan Murdoch at the Steinway & Sons showroom in Hamburg, Germany.
Thanks to the success of a $250,000 special fundraising campaign, made possible by a significant matching grant from Gandel Philanthropy, 48 donors to the Steinway Giving Circle, and additional gifts from nearly 1,300 other people who love the Primrose Potter Salon, the Centre has purchased a second new Steinway Model C grand piano for that venue. Special thanks to Krystyna Campbell-Pretty, Hyonju Newman and Monica Lim and Konfir Kabo for hosting events in their homes in support of this campaign.
This new instrument arrives at the Centre in early 2020. It will complement the existing Model C piano in the Primrose Potter Salon and greatly expand the Centre’s musical and education possibilities.
A wonderful birthday present for our 10th Anniversary!

A New Steinway for the Primrose Potter Salon
The gift of Peter & Ruth McMullin
It was not just the Centre’s performance venues that rang with song in our 10th Anniversary year. A colourful and varied free program of live music, talks, workshops, DJs and festival take-overs regularly brought the foyers to life as well.
Beginning with kid-friendly music installations during January’s Music Play Family Festival, continuing with the birthday celebration on 8 February, and punctuated at regular intervals by events like the July Q&A with Artist-in-Residence William Barton, the Centre’s foyer and other public space activities encouraged audiences and passers-by alike to linger, learn and connect.
This diverse range of foyer activations was made possible thanks to the generous support of Peter and Ruth McMullin.
In the first half of the 10th Anniversary year, our foyers were brought to life with:
114 foyer events to 30 June, including:
25 morning tea/post-concert drinks events
38 workshops
28 Meet-the-Artist events, including talks and CD signings
16 foyer concerts
7 DJs
Free Foyer Activities

Vale, Dr. Milan Kantor OAM
Philanthropist, lawyer, businessman, passionate music lover, and founding benefactor of Melbourne Recital Centre, Dr Milan Kantor OAM passed away this year at the age of 93.
Born in the Czech Republic, Milan trained as a concert pianist which fuelled his life-long love of music. After immigrating to Australia, Milan met and married Anne Kantor AO, daughter of Dame Elisabeth Murdoch AC DBE and embarked on a successful legal and business career. He retained strong links with his homeland and was the Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Melbourne until his passing.
With Anne and their children, Milan was a Founding Benefactor of Melbourne Recital Centre. Together they established its Endowment Fund in 2007, which now enables a vibrant artistic program of close to 700 concerts, artist development and access activities involving nearly 360 Australian ensembles each year. Anne and Milan’s foresight and generosity has ensured the Centre will be an important nurturer of Australian music for generations to come.
In 2019, the Centre was honoured to commemorate Milan’s passion and generosity by establishing the Milan Kantor Prize at the annual Great Romantics Competition with Annamila Pty Ltd. .
‘Chamber music is a gift. It is internalised and becomes a part of one. To participate, to be a witness to this unbelievably intimate expression of music… well I started to listen, I introduced Anne to it and we’ve never stopped listening.’
Dr Milan Kantor OAM, 2018
