PHILANTHROTOURISM…

“Away from the normal routines, life takes on a different hue. On the ocean, the air is fresher, the sky is brighter. In the desert, water means something and so do our friends. In the mountains, nature quiets us, we hear each other. Absent the tyranny of the mundane we are who we really are. Goals focus. Objectives sharpen. We find our common calling and we realize our shared purposes when we get away together.

You see, the river of philanthropy is deep & wide and there will always be generous people who will amply support your great dream backed by a sound plan when…

…THEY FALL IN LOVE AND BECOME MEANINGFULLY INVOLVED WITH YOUR ORGANIZATION”

WHAT IS A PHILANTHROTOUR? A PhilanthroTour is a uniquely creative travel excursion that highlights a nonprofit’s mission and compelling case for support. The purpose of a PhilanthroTour is three-fold. First, it creatively attracts “PROSPECTS WITH WEALTH & INFLUENCE” to learn about your mission. Second, it meaningfully involves “PROSPECTS WITH WEALTH & INFLUENCE” to participate at a higher financial level with your organization. Finally, when a PhilanthroTour is executed properly the “right” new friends take a step into your nonprofit universe and become:

a. Board Members b. Committee Members c. Campaign Cabinet Members d. Campaign Visitors e. Foundation Givers f. Corporate Underwriters g. Major Donors h. Legacy Givers i. Local Church Advocates j. Performance Volunteers k. Event Table Hosts l. Advisory Council Members m. Board of Reference Members n. …and much more

Organizations who host PhilanthroTours distinguish themselves within the charitable marketplace. Remember, a prospective donor’s time is valuable and you’re competing with other nonprofits for their heart and mind. The amount of energy an agency places in the creativity of hosting a PhilanthroTour raises the level of visibility of their mission and gets above the noise of the marketplace competing for philanthropic dollars. Quite often a PhilanthroTour generates a first point of contact with the future “Champions” your organization needs to realize your mission in ways you never thought possible. Here’s the rub…the diligent work invested in hosting a successful PhilanthroTour is only as a valuable as the time your nonprofit invests in introducing your compelling case for support during the excursion. One of the most important moments during this creative get-a-way will be the way in which you introduce your mission, project, and its associated dollar amount. Your “case” must be presented in a manner way that considers your travel partner’s goals and desires above the needs of the nonprofit. Remember…money “chases after ideas” and there will always be generous people who will amply support your great dream when it’s backed by a sound plan.

1. LIST BUILDING: If you’re going to ensure that you have the right people on your PhilanthrTour then you must discover the three resources at your disposal that provide you the names and addresses of the individuals in the community who can make major philanthropic investments.

a. INTERNAL LISTS: a. INTERNAL LISTS: Don’t prejudge your own internal mailing list. Unless properly researched you don’t know the personal net worth and capabilities of the existing friends and family members who already know of your organization or may have even given a gift. Internal potential is determined by uploading your mailing list to DonorScope.com appending publically known information to receive an overlay of their personal holdings, giving history, and large gift potential.

b. SECURED LISTS: When visiting DonorScope.com you will be provided a count for the number of households in a radius of a zip code select of your choosing who possess a net worth of $800,000 or more (or an increased net worth amount of your own choosing) who’ve indicated they give charitable gifts. DonorScope also enables users to download the names and complete contact information of every prospect identified in an excel spreadsheet format. Here’s an example of count returns from DonorScope.com:

c. ORIGINATED LISTS: The most important task in identifying community leaders of influence is to perform online research and secure as comprehensive a list as possible of the publically known altruists, philanthropists, political leaders, and volunteers who invest their time and resources in the charitable sector. This is accomplished by visiting websites, downloading annual reports, finding donor club/society lists, and reviewing board member rosters. In each case record the first and last name and then cross reference this information against both your rented lists and internal file. If an address record isn’t located then use Google, internet White Pages, and other online resources to secure complete contact information. When done properly, addresses can be located for as many as 75% of the initial names identified. Here are a few of the following resources that should be explored to produce an originated list:

a. Chamber of Commerce Membership b. Bankers Association Membership Roster c. Women In Philanthropy d. Hospital Foundation's Annual Report e. Community Foundation's Annual Report f. Museum Foundation's Annual Report

Compiling these lists and then de-duplicating them against each other provides you a file that allows you to produce an individual plan of care that properly invites the “right” prospects to join your PhilanthroTour.

MONETIZING YOUR PHILANTHROTOUR:

Remember, you just had a big win. Now it’s time to secure the 5, 6, & 7 figure gift. First, create individual plans of care consisting of multiple points of contact that further increase involvement from new and existing supporters who’ve been inspired by your “Case for Support”. Second, build new relationships with the individuals of gravity, wealth, and influence who met you for the first time on the Tour. Finally, “earn the right” to ask for the big gift.

YOU CAN DO THIS Fundraising is simply...

…finding a need and meeting it …making a promise and keeping it
