LAST FIVE REGULAR-SEASON MEETINGS:

Philadelphia Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner

Opening statement from Thursday's Season Kickoff Press Confer-ence ...

"Ahead of the first season game and after a long offseason and preseason, I'm really looking forward to [this match against Toronto]. I think that we did a decent job in preseason. We really put a lot of work into it; implementing a new system and a new playing style. We have a lot of good results, we have some games that were not that good. But that's normal. We're trying a lot in preseason. And I'm happy we could put together a roster [ahead of] our second half of the preseason in Clearwater. We should be in good shape, but at the same time when you change things and you're trying out new things, you should also be patient. There is still quite a ways to go, but so far I'm really happy and looking forward to [this match]."

Philadelphia Union Head Coach Jim Curtin

Opening statement from Thursday's Season Kickoff Press Confer-ence ...

"Exciting time of the year. A group now that has put a ton into preseason. We demanded a lot of them fitness-wise. A harder workload than they've ever experienced and they've responded well to it. Important to get some good results in preseason for the belief and confidence of the group. We have a long way still to go but the early results are positive, and that's a credit to the players. I'm also grateful for the roster that's been put together by Ernst, Chris Albright, and ownership on the financial side. So very happy with where the group is at right now and it starts for real this weekend against Toronto. There are 24 teams right now that think they have something special. At the end of the day, only one does. There was a growth in our team. Ernst and I sat in the locker room after the defeat to New York City FC. The feeling wasn't a happy one. We weren't happy with the season, happy to be there. The players weren't happy with how it ended. And I think that's a sign of forward movement. Yes, making the playoffs is a good achieve-ment, our best point total was a good achievement, but we want more. As do our fans, as do our players, as does our coaching and technical staff. Our goal now is to push forward: start the season off on the right foot against Toronto, push for all three points at home like we always do, and we're really excited to get the 2019 campaign started here at Talen Energy Stadium."
