Philadelphia, PA, 22 APR 2013—Every two years we highlight the top 10 ‘Must See’ products at LIGHTFAIR. I am the first to admit that we do not have a foolproof system. We have sources at all Tier 1 accounts, most Tier 2 and some Tier 3—and still we may miss a few great products. Of the products we are aware of, in no certain order, are our Top 10: 1. BK Lighting (#3913) with their Color Controllable Landscape light. It is a new family of products that have a tunable LED array, which can be controlled via hand held remote control. The fixture output is 2500-6500K. Think about a landscape lighting installation that changes output with the seasons – stark white in the winter, 4K in the spring to pop the new growth, 3K in the summer to show the leaves, 2500K in the fall to show the color change.

2. I have always loved Ceramic Metal Halide. One of the problems in retrofitting from a 400 watt Pulse Start to a 140 watt CMH lamp is that the reflector is designed for a source about the size of a football and is unable to properly distribute the light from the smaller 140 CMH Source. Venture Lighting (#2400) has solved this with their RIO. It is a precise optic reflector with a screw in mogul base that allows for efficient and inexpensive retrofits. It’s a great

system. It’s energy efficient. And it’s not LED.

3. Aera™ LED from Winona® Lighting (#801): is a recessed architectural LED luminaire that is adjustable in color and brightness and encourages “user customization” of color settings, circadian rhythm support and change-over-time

dynamics.

4. When incandescent replacement lamps were sold for $50—there was little interest. We have written before about the CREE (#833) A-lamp replacement. The company sent a few lamps to us in March and we purchased several at Home Depot. At $13.99 for a 60-A replacement, it’s a real winner. The color is beautiful and since my house has been mainly CFL since the 1990’s the family loves having bright, warm light instantly.

5. Our friends at EYE Lighting (#1217) have designed a 360 CMH watt lamp, called Cera-Arc, that uses an electronic HID ballast and replaces a MH 1000. The lamp and ballast are cost competitive and this is another system we have seen in person. It saves about 70% in energy.

6. Relume (#3963) is launching a 12,700 LED highbay called Spunbay. OK, so another LED highbay hits the market. What’s the big deal? The big deal is cost. Relume claims that in large volumes, the end user can expect to pay $399. That’s a big deal. Here’s a little secret. Some lighting products that win awards never make it the market because they simply are not cost viable. Judges rarely take end user cost into account. An engineer has a great idea for a product, but the market is not

willing to pay. At this price point Relume has a winner.

7. Soraa (#4047) is a company we follow quite a bit. Mainly because of their co-founder, as well as the VC money they have raised over the years. Soraa sent us two lamps a few months ago that we have been testing. At the show you will want to see their Supreme 2—it is a 65-watt equivalent, saving 85% in energy. I don’t know how it will display with all of the ambient lighting at the show, but in architectural lighting atmospheres, it is spectacular.

8. Toshiba (#1125) has a Must See product with their TLS-RTL LED Roadway luminaire. It is available in the 70 thru 400-replacement market—with a 100,000-hour life. Compare that to the 18,000 to 24,000 hour life we are used to with HID.

9.LED Engin (#953) will introduce the LuxiTune—a very unique color tunable driver that dims from bright midday light to the warmer, softer tones of evening.

LED Engin LuxiTune™ delivers warm and tunable true-color lighting to support a range of experiences from brightly lit mid-day to warmer, softer evening settings. LuxiTune is the only single emitter light engine capable of truly emulating the halogen CCT curve as it dims and warms from 3000K to 1800K with easy-to-use 0-10V dimmers. For downlighting and accent lighting in restaurant, hotel, entertainment and hospitality applications, LuxiTune creates the ambiance needed for changing moods.

Warm lightingNatural lightingTrue-color lighting

Black body dimmingLuxiTune emitters hug the blackbody curve from 3000K to 1800K as they dim in a true halogen-style manner, staying within 3 SDCM throughout for uniform lighting across the full dimming and CCT range. Blackbody color temperatures ensure natural white lighting at all intensity levels and a feeling of warmth and welcome in a dimmed light setting.

High CRI color qualityLuxiTune maintains a high color quality throughout the dimming range to ensure true color rendering at all intensity levels. At 3000K and full intensity, LuxiTune emitters have a CRI of 90 and R9 red content of 80. The CRI averages 85 and R9 averages 70 throughout the dimming range from 3000K to 1800K maintaining a rich color experience in any environment.

Integrated driverSophisticated hardware and software designs o! er pre-programmed halogen-style dimming and the option of other dimming profi les; the customer need only supply low-cost, unregulated 24VDC power supply and standard 0-10V dimmer for easy system integration in an a! ordable high performing solution. LuxiTune smoothly dims from 100% to 0.2% while maintaining blackbody CCT and high CRI / R9 throughout the dimming range. Internal programming maintains stable CCT and fl ux throughout the operating span without the need for external calibration or control.

In addition to halogen-style dimming, LuxiTune is designed for easy adaption to other lighting system confi gurations. LuxiTune supports simple 0-10V, DMX and optional wireless interfaces for alternate dimming and tuning profi les.

Lux on TargetThe single, powerful but compact emitter coupled with a TIR lens that controls and mixes the light and smoothly shapes the beam delivers the maximum usable light on target with minimal wasted light or uncomfortable glare. LuxiTune is available in 24˚ / 32˚ / 45˚ beams for downlighting, accent and other directional lighting applications.

GreenLuxiTune Light Engines o! er superior energy savings and system-level e" cacies of 60 lm/W in operation conditions without sacrifi cing the high CRI or lux-on-target. LuxiTune solutions are equivalent to 60W halogen sources and provide up to 70% energy savings.

10. From our good friend Bill Brown at A.L.P. Lighting Components (#501) is a Flexible Quick Connector that reduces wiring time by 80%. It  is  a  water-‐tight  fitting  that  allows  virtually  any  wiring  system  (conduit  or  cord)  to  be  quickly  and  easily  attached  to  a  lighting  fixture,  gasketed  enclosure  or  wiring  box.    The

connector  can  dramatically  reduce  wiring  connection  errors.
