As Worthy Chief Counselor this year, my goal was to motivate Brothers
rather than delegate in order for them to reach their full potential as
leaders. We had a successful year in improving Brotherhood and continuing
the mission and goals of this fraternity. It was great to see the enthusiasm
and innovation that the group has to offer. This was an unique yeas as we
hosted the Midwest Regional Conference. The conference consisted of
workshops, banquet, games, and social gatherings. Some favorite memories
of this year include food bus, using PDC scarves as Harry Potter costumes
during Halloween, meeting other Chapter Brothers, and taking random
pictures with PDC swag. Over this past year, I have learned that a leader
serves the members. My advice for incoming officers is to make this year
better than the last year. I can see a lot of improvements that are
needed. Choose realistic goals and be creative on how to achieve them. Be
open to everyone’s opinions. Take care and you all will do great! WCC: Jocelyn Calado
There is only one word to describe my experience this year as Worthy Vice Counselor,
“Wow”. This year started with a bang when I had to fill in as Worthy Chief Counselor for
the 69th Grand Council which we hosted in Omaha. It was an amazing experience and I
got to learn so much about Phi Delta Chi while making meaningful and lasting
connections with Brothers from all across the nation. Then there was my work with the
Fundraising Committee, which made amazing things happen for this Chapter, especially
all our new swag such as scarves, shirts, polos, and hoodies. I also enjoyed working with
the other committee chairs to support events that really helped to build Brotherhood in
our Chapter. I remember joining Phi Delta Chi because I saw an opportunity to improve
the Chapter and make a lasting impression. Looking back, I can proudly say I did all that
and more, and I am happy to be able to hand off the torch to the new executive team.
Best advice I can give to incoming officers: GO TO LDS AND GRAND COUNCIL! There
is so much knowledge and inspiration to be gained from the other Chapters that you can
bring back from LDS/GC in order to improve our Chapter.
Favorite memories: Grand Council, Food Bus, Regionals, and meeting Tim, Stevie and
Michael Nguyen. 100%.
WVC: Paul Chin
Being an executive officer this year was great as I got to meet a lot of
people and be more active in PDC. It was amazing to see our chapter
grow in numbers with the biggest pledge class to date and have our
attendance at meetings improve! One of my favorite memories from
this past year was playing the Golden Goblet games from the Midwest
Regional Conference that we hosted. I got to learn about some new
unique skills my Brothers had that I didn’t know about before. I know
that the incoming officers will continue to make PDC the best and wish
them good luck!

It was a great experience for me to serve as WKF this past year! As
WKF, I had the opportunity to build trust and work with other
Brothers. It was truly a great experience! This year, it was great to
see our Fraternity grow. I remember as an incoming P1, we filled up
the first two rows of G04, now our Brothers fill up the whole room!
I especially enjoyed this year because we got great participation from
our members, and our attendance was great with the new policy in
place. I think the most challenging aspect of my position this year
was keeping all the records in-line; I was a bit worried with regionals
coming up but I'm glad we managed to get through (successfully too)!
My advice for incoming officers is to set aside some time each week
for the Fraternity and be available whenever help is needed!
WKF: Sun Han
This was a pretty crazy year for Phi, what with hosting two conferences, doubling in
size, and the committees all kicking it up a notch. I’m grateful to have been a part of
such a big year in Phi’s history, and for the opportunity to meet so many new Brothers
from near and far. I also gained a new appreciation for Phi Delta Chi on the national
level thanks to my time as WC. Overall, it was truly a year to remember.
I am very proud to have been Phi’s WC. This was my first true leadership role in
pharmacy school, and as such I know I wasn’t perfect. But everyone has to start
somewhere, and I’m glad I had the support of my Brothers to help me every step of the
way. Looking back there are many things I could have done differently, and I still
cringe when I think about those early months when I was constantly scrambling to get
reports together. However, those days were vastly outnumbered by the many times
where I caught myself thinking “I’m so lucky!” I met a great bunch of people and
experienced firsthand that our oath is more than words. Thank you everyone for giving
your best efforts to help out a Bro who kept crying for help at the last-minute!
Best of luck to next year’s exec team! I’m looking forward to another amazing year with
Phi Delta Chi. WC: Amanda Itai
The highlights of my position involved baking birthday cakes, recognizing
Brothers of the month, grilling burgers for Brotherhood day, and
remembering our founders by playing bingo in their names. It has been an
honor to serve as Worthy Prelate this year and this role will always hold a
special place in my heart. Here are my last words to you as your Worthy
Prelate: “I charge you!”
To remember what we have learned about our Fraternity’s history, so
that we may forge ahead into an unknown future and achieve whatever
goals we aspire to accomplish.
To be true Brothers and go out of your way to develop relationships with
Brothers, so that we may be a blessing to the rest of the world.
To be family, so that we may depend on each other.
To keep burning the light of wisdom, so that our future patients may
receive a healthy dose of Phi Delta Chi.

The role of the Worthy Alumni Liaison is to maintain communication between the alumni
Brothers and the collegiate Chapter. It is also the duty of the WAL to keep the Brothers
aware of the purpose and role of an alumni especially to those graduating Brothers who are
transitioning to alumni status. The WAL keeps in touch with the Grand Vice President of
Alumni Affairs and the Regional Director for Alumni Affairs and informs them of how the
chapter is doing and if there are any problems that need help resolving.
This past year our Chapter came together to plan out two very large events. I enjoyed
attending Grand Council and the Midwest Regional Conference in Omaha. I experienced
what Brotherhood meant not only within our Chapter but with other Phi Delta Chi Brothers
across the nation. Meeting other Brothers who share the same interests and goals was a
great experience. As an officer, I learned that putting together events and keeping the
Chapter together is a very difficult task. With the increase in the number of members this
year, I would advise the new officers to plan out events ahead of time and find ways to keep
the Brotherhood together. Other Chapters have shared their experiences with having a large
number of members. Most have said that it is very difficult to manage.
All in all, this year was packed full of events. Our Chapter has been continuing to grow and I
hope to see this trend continue. I’m glad to see that people are interested in joining our
Fraternity and it shows that we have been doing something good. To all the members in our
chapter, I hope PDC has or will help you find what you looking for in pharmacy. We will
continue being Brothers for life, so if you need help with anything, don’t hesitate to ask your
fellow Brothers. Best wishes to everyone!

My position is the Worthy Inner Guard. I was able to learn the
importance ritual play within PDC. I believe it teaches me values that
I will uphold as go on to my professional career. My favorite memory is
Brotherhood Day at one of our Brother’s house (Meredith Taylor). We
had lunch and played games with the Brothers. I’m looking forward for
next year’s Brotherhood Day! Overall, this year for PDC was very
successful! We had a successful rush and hosted Grand Council and
Regionals. I believe the chapter did a great job managing the workload
that presented to us.

69th Grand council
Phi Chapter proudly served as host to the 69th Grand Council, held August
6-10, 2013, right here in Omaha at the Embassy Suites Hotel. More than
400 Collegiate and Alumni Brothers from across the country gathered for
the event that would come to be known as "Bromaha." Paul Chin
represented Phi Chapter as Worthy Chief Counselor for the formal
meetings. Duong Tran served as the Phi Chapter delegate. Kate Grafel was
the alternate delegate and host committee chair. Historian Brittany
Stevens prepared our display for the Chapter Showcase.
The event included three days of officer training courses, committee
meetings and formal meetings, an afternoon of tubing on the Elkhorn
River, an evening of bowling to raise funds for St. Jude Children's Research
Hospital, and a formal banquet to cap off the week. Attendees from every
Chapter learned from each other, debated Fraternity issues, elected new
leaders and, perhaps most importantly, forged what will surely become
lifelong friendships.

rush events
This year we initiated 47 new Brothers into our chapter setting a new pledge class
record! We are happy to welcome all of the new faces and we are very excited
about the growth of the Phi chapter. The major highlight of the pledging process
was the opportunity for brotherly bonding between active Brothers and pledges at
the rush and social events. We had four rush events this year including an
ultimate Frisbee game, happy hour at Roja Mexican Bar & Grill, a backyard BBQ
at a pledgemaster’s house, and our annual sushi night at Hiro 88. The
pledgemasters had fun planning all of the rush events and received a ton of
support from active Brothers in helping the new initiates through the pledging
process.

initiation
On November 2nd after the Founders’ Day festivities, we initiated 47 new Brothers
into the Phi Chapter. With the largest pledge class in recent history, the
pledgemasters, the WMA & WIG had their work cut out for them in order to have
Initiation run as smoothly as possible and within the allotted time frame.
In addition to the Phi initiates, we had the honor to initiate a pledge from the Nu
Chapter. It was great getting to know the Nu initiate and the two active Brothers
who came to support their fellow Brother.
Overall, the Initiation took over four hours and turned out successful. Everyone
was tired from the long night but you could see the pride each pledge had in their
eyes after accomplishing the goal of becoming a Phi Delta Chi Brother. The
pledgemasters, WMA, and WIG would like to thank all of the active Brothers,
including a handful of P4s, for helping make this night possible. We couldn’t have
done it without the support and willing efforts from everyone.

What does Brotherhood
mean to me?
For me, Brotherhood is a choice. When a Brother
struggles with a problem whether it is figuring out how to
study for a challenging class, or needing a helping hand
with the Phi Delta Chi bulletin board, or even just an
open ear to vent their frustrations, it becomes a choice to
listen, assist, or tutor a fellow Brother. This choice is not
an easy one. Brotherhood does not come naturally.
Developing the feeling of Brotherhood takes many long
conversions, many shared hardships, and many planned
or spontaneous adventures between two Brothers to grow.
Choosing to ignore a Brother’s struggle to focus on one’s
own struggle can be done without another thought. It is
easy to turn away but the Fraternity of Phi Delta Chi did
not survive 130 years without substance and sustenance
attributed to its echelons.
The sustenance of those who enter the Fraternity becomes the spirit of Brotherhood.
In order words, Brotherhood can be a life-force that propels us into greater quality in not
only our professional livelihood but also personal lives. Brotherhood is a friendship that
those of us in Phi Delta Chi chose after knowing active Brothers and rush members for a
very short time in most cases. We invested commitment and determination to be a part of a
community of achievers, learners, and leaders. We made this choice knowing that we will
be considered “Brothers for life.” Friendships that last a lifetime are extremely rare and
Brotherhood can be considered similar to that rare friendship.
With Phi Delta Chi, we made our vows at initiation to “be true Brothers” and we
renew our vows at every formal meeting. Can Brotherhood then be described as a “formal”
friendship? Maybe. The charm of this relationship that we have with our Brothers stems
from the regular reminder that as Brothers, we are never a step apart; we take our
promises to support and inspire one another seriously. When one of us tumbles, stresses, or
cries, whatever help we may need, we can depend on a Brother who will reach out a hand
to hold ours. They may lift us up with their strength. They may come to sit on the ground
where we have fallen down. Together. That is what Brotherhood is to me.

founders’ day
We celebrated Founders’ Day this year on
November 2, 2013. We invited everyone in our
Chapter, including pledges, and were fortunate
to have Brothers from Nu and Alpha join us.
The room was decorated in our Chapter colors
with streamers and balloons and everyone
brought a small dish to contribute in a potluck
style dinner. For the main event, our Worthy
Prelate, Michael Loewen, put together an
educational presentation on the eleven
founders and the history and growth of Phi
Delta Chi since its start in 1883. Founders’
Day ended with a bingo game created by our
Worthy Prelate. Brothers filled in the blank
bingo cards with the names of our founders and
used M&Ms as markers. Prizes were given out
and everyone had a lot of fun!

community service
We had the pleasure of working with several organizations to serve the
community here in Omaha and those abroad. Events include jewelry making with
Beads for Malaria to fund the purchase of mosquito nets, a Christmas gift drive
with Open Door Mission, and both a letter writing campaign and making
Valentine's cards to send to our friends at St. Jude
Beads for Malaria
NETwork Against Malaria is an organization that promotes the prevention of the
disease through the purchase of mosquito nets specifically for children. Each net
can shelter up to three children and greatly reduce the risk of contracting malaria
for years. NETwork funds the purchase of nets by selling jewelry featuring special
paper beads made by women in Uganda.
As future health care providers, we thought that helping with the prevention of
malaria was a great cause that we could relate to. So, we teamed up with the
organization to help make bracelets and necklaces that they can use to sell. Each
Brother made at least one necklace and a few bracelets, which sell for $10 and $5,
respectively. The money is sent to a priest in Uganda, who is associated with the
organization and he buys the bed nets and distributes the nets in schools. This
organization has been able to give more than 15,000 bednets and the founders of
this organization have even gone to Uganda and seen the distribution of these
bednets. This was a great cause to help out as we were able to engage our creative
sides, as well as help out with a preventable disease.

The Open Door Mission is a local gospel rescue mission based in Omaha. The
Mission provides basic needs and programs for the needy and homeless. We
participated in their Christmas Bell program, in which we received bell shaped
Christmas ornaments with the desired gifts written on the back. Phi Delta Chi
sponsored a Christmas tree decorated with those bells in the Office of Academic
and Student Affairs where students, faculty and staff of the school of Pharmacy
and Health Professions often gather and pass through. With the combined effort
of our Brothers, professors, and peers, we were able to purchase around 30 gifts
for adults in need. These gifts addressed simple needs such as slippers or bath
sets to, and also included some more lighthearted presents such as board games
and make-up kits. We delivered the gifts to the Open Door Mission to be
distributed at Christmas time for those in need.

St. Jude Valentine’s Day Cards
As Valentine's Day approached we wanted to show our support for the patients
at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. We contacted our regional
representative about making Valentine's cards to send to the kids and she agreed
it would be a great idea. The only constraint she had for us was to avoid phrases
that might seem to demand immediate healing, such as "get well soon." Before
our formal meeting in February, the community service committee supplied
materials for making the cards and pizza for everyone who participated in the
event. We decorated over 80 cards which we hope brightened many children's
day and put a smile on their faces.

How to Survive P2 Year
The second year of pharmacy school is often
described as the most challenging and
demanding. Incoming students are forewarned
during the school’s Welcome Week at the onset
of their graduate program about the second
year. The anxiety that stems from this
continues to build as P1s witness their peers
study around-the-clock, hear dreadful stories
about difficult exams and lack of sleep. To ease
the worries of younger Brothers, How to Survive
P2 Year was established.
This event provided the opportunity for
outgoing P2s to advise their Brothers of previous experiences. The evening opened with
general advice provided by the Professional and Scholastics Committee chairs. Then, each
class was discussed individually to give Brothers an idea of what to expect for the upcoming
year. Workload, exam difficulty, and professors’ teaching methods were just a few of the
relevant issues mentioned about each class. Older Brothers remained in the audience as well
to give additional feedback to the presenters’
information. Emphasis was placed on the fact
that each Brother learns and studies differently.
Contributions of advice from experienced
Brothers, such as how to study, manage time,
prioritize tasks and cope with the semester were
shared with the group.
Pharmacy Hot Topics
On April 2nd, the Phi Chapter joined with Phi
Lambda Sigma and SSHP for a lunch-and-
learn presentation called “Pharmacy Hot
Topics” to discuss trending topics going on
right now in the pharmaceutical world.
This event was open to all pharmacy students
and faculty. Of the five presenters, we had
