中國上古如何形容「世界」

「世界」一詞古漢語並不通行。 如要形容世界，多以天、地(土)、海等廣大而具體的自然現象予以比況，而天地又常與萬物並稱。

– 「普天之下，莫非王土；率土之濱，莫非王臣。」(左傳‧昭公七年) – 「知周乎萬物．而道濟天下 」(周易‧繫辭上 ) – 「天地絪縕．萬物化醇 」(周易‧繫辭下 ) – 「有天地．然後萬物生焉．盈天地之間者唯萬物 。」(周易‧序卦) – 「天地合．而后萬物興焉 」(禮記‧郊特牲) – 「中也者．天下之大本也．和也者．天下之達道也．致中和．天地

位焉．萬物育焉 。」(禮記‧中庸) – 「今天下三分，益州疲弊」(諸葛亮‧前出師表)

– 「四海會同，六府孔修。」(尚書‧禹貢) – 「四海之內，皆兄弟也。」(論語‧顏淵) – 「放諸四海」 「曾子曰．夫孝．置之而塞乎天地．溥之而橫乎四

海，施諸後世而無朝夕，推而放諸東海而準，推而放諸西海而準，推而放諸南海而準，推而放諸北海而準。」 (禮記‧祭義)

何謂宇宙？ 漢語「宇宙」一詞，最初是指房子的屋檐和棟樑。但後來引申之下，卻可解作「天下」、「四維」、「時空」等。

《說文》：「宇，屋邊也。」；「宙，舟輿所極覆也」，段玉裁注：「“宙之本義謂棟，一演之為舟輿所極覆，再演之為往古來今。」

「四方上下曰宇，古往今來曰宙，以喻天地」(高誘注《淮南子》)

「有實而終無處所者，處乎四方上下之宇也．有長而無本剽者，宙也．雖有長而不見本末者，以古往今來之宙為之本末也．」（王先謙解莊子庚桑楚篇）

蘇軾〈次 韻答章傳道見贈〉：「並生天地宇，同閱古今宙」。. 這種引申意義的「宇宙」再不是一個具體的對象，而是一高度抽象的概念。

何謂世界？ 今日所謂世界，籠統地說是全球所有地方的統稱。

查古漢語本無「世界」一詞。「世界」本是佛家用語，所指的正就是抽象意義的時空。〈楞嚴經〉裡便有「世為遷流，界為方位；汝今當知：東、西、南、北、東南、西南、東北、西北、上、下為界；過去、現在、未來為世」的說法。〔見《大佛頂如來密因修證了義諸菩薩萬行首楞嚴經‧卷四》(T19-122c)〕

由此看，「世界」其實和「宇宙」同樣都不指實物，都和廣義言的「空間」與「時間」有關。

佛家此外有「三千大千世界」、「娑婆世界」等觀念，指的是佛祖力圖教化的那「即煩惱、即菩提」的世界。

Kosmos 與「秩序」觀念 Cosmos 是理論物理學中的宇宙論(cosmology)的研究對象。今天的科學家配備了精微的天文望遠鏡，更可以差遣無人駕駛的太空船邁出太陽系的邊陲去窺探。 但 Cosmos 實出自希臘文 一概念：

– 萬物之總稱 （內容義） – 萬物之變化 （程序義） – 變化之規律 （律則義）

最原始的意義其實與「裝飾」有關=> 裝飾品cosmetics)出自一動詞，解to beautify, to put into order, arrange 事實上，在荷馬的史詩和先蘇格拉底時期的哲學殘篇中，kosmos 許

多時都是解作「秩序」的。這個字用以兼解作「世界」，反而是後來的事。不過一旦有了這一種用法，便正顯示了，希臘人眼底下的「世

界」，其實正是一套秩序的縮影。

Horizon 作為一哲學概念 – 一切認知必須由某一「觀點」去界定 – 從一觀點察看，所見到的「範圍」即一「界域」 – 凡觀點必有其限制，故一切界域都有其限制 – Horizon as background: 一切認知都有一定焦點，但此一認知焦點必

由一背景的烘托而獲得一定的脈絡意義 (contextual meaning) texere, weave; contextus, contexere, weave together

function)

From world to world-view (Weltanschauung) 世界觀 Weltanschauung 概念 – 首先由康德提出 – 類近術語: Weltbild, Weltansicht (世界圖像)

Gadamer: [Welt-an-sich Welt-ansicht] – “It is true that the historical ‘worlds’ that succeed one

another in the course of history are different from one another and from the world of today; but it is always, in whatever tradition we consider it, a human, ie. a linguistically constituted world that presents itself to us.[...]

– “This is of fundamental importance, for it makes the use of the expression ‘world in itself’ (Welt-an-sich) problematical. The criterion for the continuing expansion of our own world-picture is not given by a ‘world in itself’ that lies beyond all language. Rather the infinite perfectibility of the human experience of the world means that, whatever language we use, we never achieve anything but an ever more extended aspect, a ‘view’ of the world (Welt-ansicht). 「世界」 問題的反思 (1)

「世界觀」理論是否排斥「客觀世界」? 從康德的立場看，「世界觀」其實只在說明吾人口中或筆下所描述的「世界」，其實只是吾人對世界的一種看法；但由此卻不會帶出對「客觀世界」的否定。 吾人除非不意識到世界，一旦對所謂世界有所意識，則人之所感所知，莫不由某一意義的觀察條件的協同而為可能。

換言之，我們永不能越過自身的認知條件而妄言能對「客觀」的（也即「在其自身的」）世界有任何絕對的掌握。

「世界」 問題的反思 (2) 總括地說，吾人談論中的「世界」，只代表某一種觀點，這一意義的「世界」永遠是一知識論的問題多於是一形而上的存在問題。

我們上面曾指出，「世界」本來便不是一可清楚地標明的對象，而是吾人於認識當前的對象事物時必須設定的界域。世界雖然如此抽象，但吾人眼中卻必須要「看」出一個「世界」，必須覺得自己「活」得實在，生活才有「定向」、和才具有「意義」。

「世界」基本上是一結構性的概念。它總攝了吾人所關注的事物和事態，反映了吾人對有關物事的理解和價值，它展示了吾人生活的「眼界」，但也同時構成了吾人的「偏見」。吾人一方面必須建立一「世界觀」，但隨著自己識見的開拓，必須對此一世界觀不斷檢討，不斷自我超越。

「世界觀」一構想，其實早已包涵於「世界」這一概念之中。我們一旦明白「世界」不外是一種「觀」、一種「看」，則便應同時了解：如果吾人身處的「世界」出現任何問題，而問題又糾纏得「看」似無法解決的話，則有時候或換一個角度去看、或看深入一些、或

看長遠一點，問題說不定會顯現解決的新機！

“world” and “self” are only two sides of the same phenomenon – They are “correlative” (相聯並立) and should best be treated “correlatively”

– Any attempt or pretension to treat “world” and “self” as “separate entities” will very possibly run into philosophical difficulties
