INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC STANDARDSOur 4-year program follows international best practices and aims at taking students to the frontier of knowledge in their field. This is achieved through a sequence of general advanced courses, during the first year, and field courses, during the second year. You’ll take part in our exciting research environment from the end of the first year when you are expected to start conducting your own research.

TRAINING EXPERIENCEFaculty members at Nova SBE are experienced in advanced training, specifically in advising doctoral students.

RESEARCH EXCELLENCEA series of research workshops get students acquainted with the research agenda of the faculty in the first year. From then on, students can present their work and get feedback from faculty members who work in several of our Knowledge Centers.

INTERNATIONAL NETWORKWe take particular interest in the internationalization of the candidates’ research network. Candidates spend at least one semester abroad and can benefit from several exchange agreements in place.

ResearchPhD in Economics | Finance at Nova SBEAccept our challenge. Achieve excellence.

The program lasts for four years and is designed to accept students after completing a Master’s of Science or equivalent one-year pre-experience Master’s degree in economics, finance, management, or other related fields. 

The first two years are the coursework part of the program, while the last two ones are focused on research. As of the second year, students participate and present their research in progress in the weekly PhD Research Workshop. Students are also expected to take part in Nova SBE’s research seminars on a regular basis.

The program is delivered in English.

You will be encouraged to present your work in international conferences from the second year of your PhD program. At Nova SBE you will be encouraged to attend job market conferences during your last year in the program. Internal funds are available for these purposes.

A knowledge center that generates distinctive expertise on business and economic development in Africa, with a particular focus on Portuguese-speaking Africa: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Sao Tome and Principe.

A Knowledge Center that brings together the human resources and the activities developed in the Finance area of Nova SBE. Its aim is to strengthen the cooperation between the school and industry, through better research and education in finance.

NOVA SBE HEALTH ECONOMICS & MANAGEMENT KNOWLEDGE CENTER

Nova SBE’s research unit and knowledge center for Health Economics, Health Management, Health Policy, and Public Health. It produces and disseminates scientific knowledge that is useful to society and can contribute to well-informed and well-reasoned decision-making.
