Residency ProgramThe Postgraduate Year One (PGY-1) Pharmacy Residency Program conducted by South Miami Hospital, is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

Duration of residency: 12 months

Number of positions: 1

Estimated stipend per year: $40,000

Residency start date: July 1 of each year

Resident activities include, but are not limited to:

n In-services

n Journal clubs

n Interdisciplinary rounds

n Staffing

n Precepting pharmacy students

n Major research project

n Mid-year poster presentation

n Continuing education presentation

n Drug information

n P&T committee

n MUE and new drug reviews

A final written report of the residency project will be required for completion of the program.

The resident will be awarded a certificate upon successful completion of all program requirements.

Pharmacy departmentSouth Miami Hospital, currently licensed for 467 beds, is a part of Baptist Health South Florida, the largest faith-based, healthcare organization in the region, with an outstanding reputation for medical and service excellence. South Miami Hospital houses such innovative programs as the Center for Robotic Surgery, the Center for Women & Infants, Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The mission of the Department of Pharmaceutical Services at South Miami Hospital is to provide efficacious, safe and cost-effective drug therapy of the highest quality, to achieve positive patient outcomes and improve the quality of life of the patients served.

The pharmacy service consists of 30 professional staff and 43 nonprofessional staff.

Unit dose, IV admixture, Pyxis, MAK and Siemens pharmacy systems are utilized.

Overall program structure

Staffing requirementsResident is required to staff two, eight-hour shifts and one weekend every four weeks. The resident is also required to work two holidays — one holiday must either be Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.
